Spencer Lee Questions

To be clear I never said Metcalf was in Ames. I heard he was in Ames. Zadick and St. John on the other hand spent a lot of time there this week.

Rumored to be a "4th" hawkeye in Ames. Ramos was offered position. Declined.

Metcalf, Evans among other names have been brought up but again just rumors.

Would Cyclones not feel a bit slapped in the face with an entire ex-Hawkeye coaching staff?

Humility is a wonderful experience..............

When it happen to someone else of course..........

If they hire Evans, Clone fans would go into meltdown mode.

Would have been a great staff: Dresser, DSJ, Ramos, Evans...basically every Hawk on the roster in recent memory that those guys loved to hate. Glad Tony stayed at UNC because I think it will round him out in the long run being with an Okie State guy.

Who cares. Winning is winning no matter who is coaching.

Did Iowa mind when Dan Gable from Iowa State dominated?

I have heard some supporters of Iowa State will leave if they hire more Iowa wrestlers....that is a SLIM few. They have already raised over 750K to Dresser's 1mil goal.

I don't know what the attitude in IC towards ISU was in that time frame but today ISU fans spew vitriol over Iowa wrestling on a consistent basis. If guys like Evans, Ramos and Metcalf end up at ISU there's going to be a lot of turd eating among the ISU faithful.

I thought Brent was headed out to Colorado Springs to be the Developmental Coach at the OTC?

Tell me more about how there's not something odd about the relationship between the program and Brent right now.

Tony so are you spreading rumors or are you a journalist? Some people (not me) just might use your site as a source of info. Some might even listen to your podcast. Metcalf might be one of the most approachable post grad hawks in recent years. Send him a message or call him. Spreading rumors on a message board......come on man...

Is there any chance we could come to some agreement that would keep you and Casper from interviewing committed recruits until they sign an LOI....?

Did you listen to the radio show at all? Did you listen to the context of the statement? Clearly not.

Lol, sadly I had to kill it about 4 min in......seriously, what do you think about waiting until these kids sign....? At least, maybe, could you mute Casper's mic, you know, make him think he's talking but no one can hear him...

If you are Dresser and could land Metcalf as the club coach it would be a real slap in the face to Iowa and would be a really smart move by Dresser, so I wouldn't doubt they are going to make him a really good offer.
If this came true, it would be the first time I'm on the need a change at the top ship. Hopefully he goes to the OTC through 2020 and comes back to Iowa City as a PAID coach.

So because the Iowa coaching staff is full and Brent is taking the best opportunity available, TB should be fired?
If we let Iowa State take a valuable Hawkeye away from us because we can't make room for him somewhere, then maybe. I'm sure the almighty Spooner must see things differently. Please don't call Tom on me.

Penn State somehow made room for Varner maybe the next time you talk to Cael ask him.

Yes. He's on their coaching staff. So back to four posts ago. Which coach would you like to fire to make room for him?

If I had to make a list of all of the guys that I thought the coaching staff was going after the hardest.. or who is legitimately considering Iowa in the 2018 recruiting class heres who I would list (based off of conversations at NCAAs, and perusing Twitter** for potential recruiting nuggets):

From Iowa:
Nelson Brands (Already Committed) - 157/165
#30 Brody Teske - 133
Joe Kelly - 165/174
Bryce Esmoil - 184
Joel Shapiro - 165/174

Out of staters:
#4 Roman Bravo-Young - AZ - 133
#6 Sammy Sasso - PA - 149/157
#16 Trent Hidlay - PA - 174/184
#38 Rocky Jordan - OH - 157/165

** Almost all big programs have a twitter presence. For example: I think M* does most of the social media work, and I'm pretty sure he follows almost everybody that Iowa is targeting on twitter. Guys I have seen mentioned here (Like Joey Silva and Brayton Lee) have 0 connections with any of the Iowa coaches on social media. Everybody else listed above does. Something thats even more telling IMO, is who Tom Brands follows. He is not active at all on social media, but I'm sure he's not following RBY and Sasso just for sh*ts and giggles. In my mind, that tell me Iowa wants those two guys pretty bad.

So If I had to guess I'd say we pick up 1-2 of the guys from Iowa in the near future, and hopefully a big out of state name.

My personal opinion on the priority of the remaining recruits goes like this (I'm also assuming that Kelly will be coming regardless, due to his connection to the program):

1A: RBY
1B: Teske
2: Sasso
3: Hidlay
4: Shapiro
5. Jordan
6. Esmoil

We need a 133. So that is the top priority. We need more elite recruits, thats where Sasso comes in, he's elite, and will make the first half of our lineup freakin STACKED from 125-157. Hidlay is wrestling 160 at FLO nats, but he is big, and they get a weight allowance. I think he wrestled 170 at States in PA. I think Brooks was about the same size at this point in his HS career. He was always a 171 and a smaller 189 when he first bumped up. I think Hidlay has plenty of room to grow. Shapiro I think is a hidden gem in this class, hes a Fargo Freestyle AA, and I think he could be a 2 YR starter, Alex Meyer type of guy for us. I would like to see how much he could improve in the Iowa room wrestling with Marinelli/Gunther/Young for 3 years before he would be potentially starting. Jordan is a luxury, but not a necessity. He has bloodline of an amazing wrestling family, and would be in an ideal situation to improve tremendously with Kemerer/Marinelli/Brands/Sasso and everybody in the middle weights. I think if he comes, he and Brands will wrestle off to replace Kemerer for their SO years, and then could potentially have a combo of Brands/Jordan at 157/165 for two years after that. Esmoil for much needed upper weight depth.

So those are most of my recruiting thoughts currently. Subject to change when I read smarter opinions than mine! And of course, Schultz remains the top 2019 priority.

Thoughts/Criticisms?
If we wanna get over this 2,3,4,5 place finish hump we need to flip Teasdale or RBY and add Sasso to this class.

Go back two weeks of threads. Morningstar or Berhow to keep Metcalf no brainier. Now save your smart a** response about recruiting or Stolls progression. It's all been stated in the time to shake things up thread. if you call them later just let them know I like them as coaches, but I think Metcalf is someone we should do what it takes to keep around if he doesn't end up going to Colorado. Which I don't think will happen, so you don't have to respond to that either.
I'll be waiting for the "I don't understand" post.

Just pointing out that "finding a way" isn't such a slam dunk. Drop Berhow and you lose a quality upper weight coach. Drop Morningstar and you lose the only guy who seems to "get it" on the recruiting trail, responsible for reeling in two top 10 P4P wrestlers this year. You may very well gain with Metcalf but you could very well lose in other areas.

It's pretty simple, either you work to verify or disprove rumors, or you just continue to spread them. Screen shot my response and put it on twitter to say the posters on HR are a problem....tony YOU ARE spreading rumors. Call the man or please do us all a favor and stop pretending to be a journalist.

And please consider my request about the recruits and your interviews.

I don't get this...trade/signing rumors are a staple in other sports. Same with coaching destinations.

Metcalf or Ramos for that matter don't have the personalities it takes to recruit top 10 kids. I guess time will tell, but I hope we don't keep getting 5th.

Hey, they may very well might. Not saying theh don't. Make no mistake about that. Just pointing out a couple of important issues.

I agree with this. Heck, we are posting on a website built around such rumors. It's a whole industry.

Also, I might be missing the boat but I consider Tony more like a blogger than journalist. No offense to Tony.

Ahh, the great one has spoken......yes they are, for message boards and shock jocks, not journalist....

http://www.espn.com/blog/nba/rumors

https://www.si.com/nfl/2015/03/11/nfl-rumors-free-agency-trades-2015-nfl-draft

These are just two links but if you google, you will get the phonebook. I take the word rumor, at least in wrestling to mean that Tony's source is someone other than Metcalf who doesn't want their name revealed in this instance. For example: Tony: "Hey DSJ, congrats on your new position." DSJ: "Thanks bro...Metcalf is also going to be here to check it out in a few days but nothing official and you didn't hear it from me."

Because of the lack of transparency in wrestling and that these guys are not household names, nothing would get talked about in wrestling without the "rumor mill." I think Tony would be the first to admit that he isn't wrestling's version of Cronkite. Just a dude running a website talking about the sport and passing along things he hears once in awhile. As a fan, i'd rather hear it than not. Just trying to be polite since you did refer to me as my backup name.

Maybe its just me but i cant stand listening to Casber. Talks about inviting himself to Spencer's grad party. Then he feels the need to remind Spencer its a 17 hour drive from home to Iowa City. He tried a April Fools joke of Teasdale decommiting PSU and going to Lehigh. Yeah right. Reprimands his coworker on air about microphones and how to use them like he is some kind of professional.

Good lord i had to stop listening. It like was amateur hour at the strip club bringing out the pregos and meth girls!
