"Spoiled" Food

Due to some poor planning, we had a ton of pie at Thanksgiving this year. Been working through it all and I just ate the last piece of it this afternoon. Had to pull a couple mold spores forming off the top of the crust, threw it in the microwave, put some ice cream on it. Good to go.

I've done stuff like this for forever. Never had any gastrointestinal repercussions.

People in my circle think I'm nuts. Am I?
 
Most Americans are too first world to do that anymore but my father used to tell me to do the same when I was a kid (usually with bread) Can't say I've done that recently tbh but if I was hungry enough and it was just a little* mold I'd probably still do it lol

Anyone who likes blue cheese has done worse.

There's no stale bread that can't be solved with a toaster and peanut butter.

I don't do it because I'm cheap. I'm just not grossed out by pulling a mold spore off and I'm too lazy to go get more bread.

Wtf. I always smell the milk before pouring.

Meat is a little bit tricker because things like ground beef always smell a bit acidic to me.

This is so funny. I grew up in a household where expiration dates never seemed to matter and they were simply guidelines. My siblings and I always give my parents crap for it now, but we also jokingly brag about how our immune systems laugh at some of these health threats. There grandkids look at the expiration dates of everything in the fridge when they are over there before they eat or drink something. Lol….. At least for my family that was growing up as blue collar on a tight budget in the 70’s and 80’s. No food was wasted.

Admittedly, I have been yelled at by my wife a time or two for not following or looking at expiration dates. Some things in boxes I never even knew had expiration dates. 😂🤷‍♂️
 
Sometimes when you cut it off cheese the cheese that's left tastes better.
 
Correct me if I’m wrong, but mold that you see on cheese and baked goods generally isn’t harmful, right? It’s bacteria that you find in food that’s lingered too long that gets you.

Ya, expiration dates for the most part are determined by my nose!
 
My understanding is that the mold that you see on top isn't the full extent of it. Rather, there's "veins" of the mold that run deeper into the food - which is why it's not as easy as picking off what you can see and being okay.

I've got a pretty strict 5-day rule about leftovers. Usually I'll call it at 4 days, just to be sure.

My understanding is that the mold that you see on top isn't the full extent of it. Rather, there's "veins" of the mold that run deeper into the food - which is why it's not as easy as picking off what you can see and being okay.
I think that's what makes the cheddar taste better.

That's all true but most fungi are suspectible to microwave radiation.
