I like the fact that they burned his red shirt. If he is indeed that good then we need to get him reps. If you take last year for instance. Beathard was hurt and although I love Beathard's ability I think a strong backup would have helped him recover and made us a better team. He seemed like he really struggled at times and by the end of the year he was a small percentage of himself. If a 100% Stanley is better than a 60% Beathard than make the change and let him heal.

Yeah, Ferentz was heavily criticized after a 4-8 season in 2012 in which JVB was the only QB in college football to take every snap for a FBS team. I agree. If he is the future, get him some game reps. How nice would it be if Stanley is in next week in the 4th quarter because Iowa is up big?

I liked his decision on the only pass play in the Miami-Ohio game. Everyone was covered and he threw it away. Nice decision making.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't think Stanley is a better QB due to his one pass attempt. If Stanley can play enough this season to the point he gets 30+ attempts, or the equivalent of one game's experience, then maybe burning his redshirt is worthwhile, but I have my doubts whether he'll get an opportunity to see the field that much.

Stanley must not just be a tad better then Weigers, but noticeably for them to burn a redshirt. So my next question is what happens to Weigers at the end of the season if Stanley is the man, does he transfer or just take the back seat?

I'd think he'd transfer. Does Cook switch positions? Boyle??

Haha it still blows my mind that in a 4-8 year no one else took a snap.. Not even one?!

Glad I can laugh about it now

JVB taking every snap that year was literally mind-blowing. The game that specifically stands out is when we were getting waxed by Penn State at home under the lights. Game was 31-0 at one point and I was literally about beating my head up against the wall wondering WTF.

Under those circumstances, why NOT let another QB see action.

I was at that game.. It was loud for like 5 plays and then just a blood bath.. The PSU people were rather quiet though considering what had happened the previous year. That was the only thing that made me not want to pull my hair out

Uh, "new kirk" is why Stanly got to hand the ball off a couple times in a blow out? Last year, in our 12-0 season, the backup QB under "new kirk" threw a total of 4 passes despite CJ being injured most of the year. This wasn't "new kirk," it was simply a shortsighted decision to burn a redshirt on a kid who will not likely get any meaningful snaps this year.

What other team on the schedule are we going to blow out more than Miami of Ohio? Not ISU or the #1 team in IAA. This was Stanley's "significant playing time" unless CJ gets hurt, which I sure hope he doesn't.

As an aside, Texas just beat Notre Dame with a true freshmen QB. Alabama killed USC with a true freshmen QB. It's not that freshmen QBs can't play...the issue is, why waste a redshirt year if you are not going to actually play a kid when you've got a top notch senior QB ahead of him.

If the guy gets meaningful snaps this year it will have been a good move. If not, another hair brained move on the part of KF.

This may be OT, but Iowa's QB recruit Peyton Mansell, was named player of the game for last Fridays game victory over Fredrickson High School 55-27. He had 151 yds passing 3 Tds and 117 yds rushing and 2 Tds. I did not attend the game, but hope to watch next Fridays game against Stony Point High which is a larger school in Round Rock, TX near Austin. I hope to give you guys a good scouting report, after all I was a 2nd string QB in Jr High.

It shows you Nate Stanley better not get comfortable either. Future of the program? Maybe, but every QB that comes in will get a fair shot to compete just like Stanley did and took advantage. I like it

if Stanley would have Redshirted this year... he could potentially leave for another school his Senior year... or... even opt for the NFL Draft....
plus...
if he is potentially the number 2 QB right now... even if its close... you play him....
even if Stanley never takes another snap the rest of the season...
this was a good move by KF.

"Clean up isle 3..." Please return to your real job.
It's as simple as this. Your QB could go down the 3rd, 5th or 12th game - maybe for a series, maybe for a game???? At THAT moment, Kirk wants to play his best QB and not have that be his first live snap because they're thinking 4 years down the road. They believe this is Nathan - enough said.
