Stanzi to Lions Practice Squad

Have the rules changed? I thought after 2 or 3 years in the league you could no longer be on the practice squad and had to make the 53 man roster,

Stanzi got the "love it or leave it" exemption. It's in the fine print of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Heck of a way to make a living whike not having to ever actually perform on the field. I guess the intangibles really do make a difference.

Backup on a roster is pretty nice. Practice squad isn't a bad gig, but it only pays $6600/week and that's just the weeks of the NFL season.

Obviously, would love to see him make a roster. Back-up QB in the NFL is a sweet gig. Making millions, rarely taking a hit, traveling the country in style, etc. Sure, winning championships as the starter is the ultimate, but if you're thinking of your long-term health and financial future, it's hard to beat the role of a long-term back-up QB.

Still not a bad gig if he can find some reasonable employment for the other 8 months of the year, but obviously nothing close to what he'd be pulling in on a 53-man roster.

Googled the rules. I have no info on Stanzi's past status but you are eligible to be on practice squad if you have not been on game day active 45 man roster more than 9 games. My guess this is exception to let Stanzi be on practice squad as I think he was usually the third QB and never really active when on rosters. You can not be on practice squad more than two years.

I think the 2 year limit is for a particular team, and not per player. Did he ever suit up for KC or JAX on the active roster?

I don't see any haters in this thread, unless it's coming from posters on my ignore list.

From the Detroit News:

Although he's entering his fifth year in the NFL, the 6-foot-4, 228-pound Stanzi has yet to appear in a regular-season game, which made him eligible for the practice squad.

I guess I dont normally follow these type of situations, but is it normal to have a player stick around the NFL for 5 years without playing a single snap?

For any other position than QB I would say no. But I imagine there are a few QBs out there that fit the bill.
