Starting the February Fade a little early this year, eh?

No, hes supposed to handle substitution patterns a lot better and have the team playing their best basketball at the end of the season rather than two months too early.
CJ's injury threw off the usual sub pattern. Tonight, no one could throw it in the basket in the second half. Murray seemed like the right sub to me, but he isn't the same zone stretcher as CJ and is a better interior defender. Patrick had an off night, along with everyone, except JoeW in the first half. JoeW maybe should have been more selfish in the second half.

Joe definitely should have been more selfish in the second half. Nobody is talking about him now, but tonight was his opportunity to show that he can take over a game with other starters hurt or playing poorly and defenses locked in on Garza, and he flat out disappeared. Incredibly unfortunate

Indiana just gave a great display on how to beat this team... I was starting to believe this team was immune from the Fran fade, but clearly not the case. I’d expect us to lose 5 of our next 6, particularly if Frederick doesn’t play.

It would also be helpful if Patrick McCaffery could actually make a layup at some point.

I would hope they are tough enough mentally to not let a message board bother them

but on the other hand, it would make sense

Yes, I have a hard time believing any of the players rush to this board to get a review of their game and
then get their feelings hurt. Twitter on the other hand, I'm sure some gambler is sending JBO a nasty
tweet to let JBO know he shot poorly.

Good point.

Can we at least agree that a “fade” must involve multiple losses? Otherwise we can talk about Fran’s December fade this year.

Indiana did give a display on how to beat this team......however, even with their defensive approach, JBo missed how many good looks? How often can teams expect that to happen, even if they are playing amazing D?

We’ll see if Fredrick’s injury is a tonight thing or a multiple games thing. If it’s extended, Iowa will have a chance to play with the new rotations over the next 8 days. If not, they’ll get CJ’s constant motion back in the flow. If CJ is out for a bit, Iowa will have to do some different things when there’s an extra player to sag off of.

One takeaway tonight is that both Patrick and Murray left some points around the rim. They’ll get stronger, but damn I think those two are going to get to the rim a LOT in the coming years.

This.

Iowa basically has a a stud horse in the middle, his "facilitator", and three shooters who can all go off ... or disappear.

The subs are good but the core nucleus can't be one guy.

Every year, there’s so much talk of the “Fran Fade”, but results do not bear that out. Going back 10 seasons, Iowa has had a losing record in January 5 times and a losing record in February 4 times. Some of those were during bad basketball seasons. The one absolute fade was the 2015-2016 team. They went 3-4 in February after a 7-1 January with a team that finished 22-11. the 2013-2014 team went 3-4 in February with late losses in a 20-13 season, but that was a 9-9 Big Ten team.

Here’s a decade of January/February Iowa hoops:

YearOverall RecordB1G RecordJanuaryFebruary
2019-202020-1111-95-35-3
2018-201923-1210-105-35-2
2017-201814-194-143-62-6
2016-201719-1510-85-43-3
2015-201622-1112-67-13-4
2014-201522-129-93-46-2
2013-201420-139-94-33-4
2012-201325-139-93-44-3
2011-201218-178-102-55-3
2010-201111-204-141-72-5

So, in 10 years, they’ve had a couple fades and a couple years where February was better than the rest of their season (18-19, 14-15). The rest of the years, the performance in Jan/Feb largely lined up with who they were. I just can’t stress 2017-2018 as a “Fran Fade“ when they went 2-6 in a February in a season where they were 14-19/4-14. That’s not a fade, it’s just not a good team.

You can’t say the Fran Fade isn’t a thing... 2013-2014 they closed out the season losing 7 of 8. 2015-2016 they closed out the season losing 6 of their last 8. 2018-2019 gets forgotten about but they backed into the tournament losing 5 out of their last 6. The only tournament team they’ve had that hasn’t backed into the tournament was 2014-2015, not counting last year since the tournament didn’t happen. Hopefully this team doesn’t end up the same, but the Fran fade does appear to be real.

Go away. What is Fran supposed to do, put on a uniform himself?
Fran didn’t have his best night. I’m not throwing away the season or anything like that. Just saying he should’ve called a timeout during the 9-0 run or certainly before it was a 16-2 run. And then he choose to go scorched earth on the refs. The team was worse than usual on defense and couldn’t hit a 3. We were anything but tough against a very average team so everyone is a little frustrated.

Which is a sad admission for a veteran team. They should know better.

Players are humans ... not robots. A team handling high expectations from the coaches, fans, and (more importantly) themselves will determine how this season goes. Here's hoping to the players and coaches continuing to work hard ... and for the health of the team (CJF - get better).

I just can't conceive of why a "fan" that is so sick of his team year after year after year, would continue following that particular team. Seems like a form of self flagellation to me.

No doubt. There are posters on this site that hate everything about Fran, Kirk, and basically every thing their teams do. Life is too short, if thats the case move on to something else for Christs sake..... Jees........
