I had no real expectation of the men beating IL and the women beating MD, but these moments where you realize a good to great team in the context of Iowa sports can still be humbled by even better teams isn't fun.

I think the vast majority of us would have been borderline ecstatic had we been told that we would be entering the tournament as a 2-seed as recently as say about a month ago.
And several posted that Iowa was not worthy of a top 20 ranking much less top 10.
As the Hawks do better, there are more manic depressive types on this board.
Yup - I was starting to get that 'Stanford Rose Bowl' feeling, but our players hung tough in the end. If we can win some games in The Dance, our hoops program is definitely on an upward trajectory and the average college basketball fan will take notice.

Hell even if you said we’d finish the season ranked 5th finish 3rd in the big ten, make the semis and be a 2 seed I think people would have taken it in a second.. have to produce the next few weeks though
Illinois is the rightful B1G champion and played like it. Iowa hung tough but just isn’t quite on the Illini level.
yeah, I wasn’t a believer in this team midway through the conference schedule.
but three things happened and I think all are equally important:
1) CJ came back
2) wieskamp kicked into another gear
3) team defense improved greatly
we’re clearly NOT one of the best 5 teams but on any given day we can play like one. That’s why next weekend will be so fun. Barring a complete collapse, this team should make the sweet 16. Then I guess it all comes down to matchups (maybe our bracket will be totally messed up after first two rounds?) and whether we’re hitting shots or not.
I’ve been a Hawk fan my entire life. I’ve been seasoned to expect the other shoe to fall... I know we rarely win big games for whatever reason. But dammit if this isn’t going to be a super exciting tourney, because it is very rare we have this good of a squad (and seed).
I’m not sure I’ll ever see a national championship in either football or basketball. I’m likely halfway to being dead so there can’t be too many more good chances. I’m praying like hell this team can get hot and literally “go off” the next couple of weeks. I’m running out of good chances.
This team is so close. Just need that athletic penetrating guard that stirs the drink.

Correct, and Joe T could definitely be that guy, if he wasn't too fast for his own feet.
Great post - I think our best shot at sniffing any sort of hope at getting NC hardware for our trophy case will hinge in Hoops. (unless 'Bama some day gets the death penalty ala SMU!)
best team in 20 years.... looks like there’s some youngsters coming back that can play and are more athletic..... the program’s a lot better than it was when Fran took over.... BIG is a tough league to compete in....all in all Iowa basketball hasn’t been this much fun for a long time.
