Sully & Pat Fitzgerald, ex-coaches & ex-teammates postgame

A lot of coaches have some baggage. Mistakes made. Like the whole "racist" thing at Iowa, we just don't really know exactly what went on there and how much of the blame he deserves.

NW won a lot of games with less talent than their opponent. Fun offense, tough defense.

If he wanted to coach at Iowa, I'd put him on the list.

Just wild that we all want to move on from Kirk for better chances to win, but then we throw out washed coaches with worse win percentages.

Either we’re a good enough program that we can go and get someone good, or we aren’t and have to settle for the devil we know.

I prefer to aim higher.
He took a bottome dwelling, laughingstock of a program and made them relevant in the Big10. He got screwed by jNW & I hope he gets his 2nd chance to redeem himself. He's a helluva coach.

What do you think Kirk’s win % would be at Northwestern? Gary Barnett had 2 Big 10 Championships in 6 years at Northwestern yet had a winning % less than 50. Fitz did an amazing job there and I’d be ok with him coaching Iowa.

He would have to be way more consistent at Iowa. Maybe he could with more talent, etc.

But, those years of winning the B10 West followed by a 4 win season the following year wouldn’t fly at Iowa.

My God, read these threads. Iowa's most vocal fans not only demand wins, but condition even that support based on how the games are won. Iowa winning 8 games is considered a bad season at a school like Iowa. That's insane, of course, but very real.

I follow the NW boards and they grew tired of fitzs conservative style...hated his game management...much like some here with Kirk.
Like lick (at Butler)and Kirk much of his success was built on assistants excellence.
When d-coordinator hankiwitz retired program faltered.

Familiarity breeds contempt.
Maybe he could succeed at Iowa but would be a clone of Kirk..which some fans don't want.

Had to take a 2nd look. I almost thought Fritz was wearing an Iowa shirt there. But nope. We’ll see if that ever happens when his kid is on the roster. You kind of have to respect the commitment to the hate that he has.
He did have when Sully met him in the tunnel after the game.

certainly not if he is a Ferentz clone

My son is a Northwestern alum and very much felt that way. Loved Fitz's passion and respected him as the face of the program. Hated that conservative style.

Yes, Fitz was wearing Iowa gear under his jacket. The younger son had his high school shirt on. The one committed had all Hawk gear on.

I've seen multiple people trying to correct me that Fitz was wearing an Iowa shirt under his jacket in the video.

Since when does Iowa clothing have the word "Loyola" on it? The name of the high school where his kid goes to. It might look like an Iowa shirt, but it isn't. He wears black clothing to Iowa games, but there's no Iowa logos on his clothing so far. He has been forced to wear an Iowa Football lanyard for his access pass though.

Thats kind of the point with Kirk. He hasn't been able to win it all, although really very few not named OSU or Michigan have, BUT he's consistently top half generally in that 3rd to 5th spot in the conference. His floor is higher then pretty much ALL the coaches not at OSU, M, or PSU for the last 20 years.

Hmmm... So the two longest tenured coaches in the league, (by a wide margin) and their fans got tired of them. Shocking.....

Well dammit Mrs Fitz had Hawk gear on, and she is way hotter than Pattie.

Fair point, it’s hard to know what might have been. I always thought if KF had the almost automatic influx/upgrade of talent at a blue blood he could have done some damage with his excellent track record of player dev. We likely will never know.
Disagree. Bue Bloods don't need the same level of player development. He would have come up short because of his poor decision-making, lack of strategic sense, and inflexibility.
