I know it was "only PTL". But it sure did bring a lot more coverage of Iowa basketball than the whispers we have now! I miss that talk, and being able to see future, current and past players. Anything to satisfy my thirst for info on the Hawkeyes.

Curious if other B1G schools do not have any players in summer leagues? I'm assuming Nebbie with their great tradition doesn not.... I only looked up a few, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan & MSU all have players in some type of summer league.

Going from March to November with nothing on the Hawks is waaay too long. Not even a simple shirts and skins game before football games... Yer Killin me Fran!

I do think they miss an opportunity not having public scrimmages before football games. Maybe there are restrictions on that that I’m not aware of.

Is the summer league that was started in Des Moines some years back no longer operating?

Capitol City League is still going strong. 6 teams. ISU and Drake players, along with area small college, JUCO, and a few high school prospects. Similar to what Prime Time League was.

Too bad they couldn’t make it work. It was a packed gym most nights. Enjoyable experience.

They need to bring back the pre season black and gold blowout. Use it as a fundraiser for U of I children's Hospital. Maybe the Dance Marathon group could take this on as a project. Since we no longer get to see the newcomers and redshirts during the summer and there are no more pre football game scrimmages, I think there would be a great deal of interest in this game. Charge $5 a head and pack the place.

Thanks 2212.

Can you imagine football without any spring practice and all the information that comes from it?? It would drive the diehard people nuts!

I think the lack of info coming from the basketball team lets a lot of people lose interest. Out of sight, out of mind... Not most on here. But some I am sure.

Only six teams?

I wonder if Randy Larson reads these threads? Randy, if you're out there, we need a "re-birth" of the PTL.

He is ancient. This needs to be done by someone 30+ years his junior. A former Hawkeye perhaps? Living in IC. There has to be more than enough support for it....

BUT will Fran allow it?? He was the one that canceled the shirts vs skins games. Not sure why. All the Hawkeyes play unsupervised pickup games... Most days of Every week. It's in their blood. They got to play.... Hopefully Fran would allow a new league to be developed, if the right persons were to do so.

I miss it.
I find it hard to believe that it hurts player development.
It became a scapegoat for a horrendous defensive team performance in 2017-18.
Staying in front of the opponent can always be improved by working on it in live action.

Can't have more than 2 players from a single college on each team. Usually not going to have more than 12 eligible players in the summer. People go to watch ISU players not randoms from Drake and rec leagues. I guess some people are probably watching Dante some this year.

One thing I've heard of in relation to ISU is that it really brings the team together in the summer. It's like an hour each way to WDM, they all go together, it's a way to interact with fans and really sets the expectation for fan engagement right away for the freshman. It's less about the actual basketball and more about the experience if that makes sense.
