Take 2 on Amarion Nimmers

I would love to see the young man take a redshirt…..he appears to have a lot of talent and maybe a year in the strength program, learning the system, adjusting to college life, and adapting to the speed of the college game and he could be a regular contributor.

We know that he has big time athleticism.
He seems physically ready to play. Any issues will be the mental side, but I think his skills/game really fit well with Iowa's style of play. I hope he gets opportunities this year.

It strikes me that if he doesn't play this season he may never play for the Hawks. Don't know why but It's a feeling I've had since he got here and the way players move now...

I think he earns a scholarship and contribute starting next season. I like his game but has some holes to work on like left hand finishes but a lot of potential imo.

What DanHawkPella said is my guess.....this is all pure speculation on my part...but the staff has certainly had some time to evaluate him and his progress to date....and can continue to do that right up until the first game and THEN, IF he's not in the 2 deep (or the rotation-whatever we want to call it) or wouldn't be playing then he gets this from the coaches: We think you are a good fit, we think that you have the talent to be a fulltime contributor.....so, we want you to redshirt this year and work on getting XYZ skill(s)to where it needs to be, and next year we will put you on scholarship with the intent that you will be a part of the rotation.

Or not....depending on the coaches evaluation. IF (BIG IF) he can/would help this year then you play him and don't redshirt. My guess is that will be based on what the coaches see at the time the season starts AND Josh Dix and the rest of the 2G/PG depth. It could also be that there's a recruit in the wings (kid from Minnesota) that's a combo guard that the staff feels good about, so what would the fit be? How does that affect a scholarship?

Clearly this young man (Nimmers) is a high level athlete. He certainly appears to have some good offensive skills.....so, is he not playing well defensively? Is he turning it over much?

This is as interesting of a walk-on, recruit, situation as I have seen. Why was he not a high level recruit with the apparently obvious tools he has? He reportedly is a very good student and citizen......so, can't wait to see how this develops.

Redshirting seems to rarely work out anymore, especially for guards.

From what I understand he needs to work on ballhandling, shooting and defensive effort.

Id make any pt he gets contingent upon maximum defensive effort.

When you're that athletic you can get away with less in the skill department.

He looks well put together physically. Is he really 6'3?

Note that Rivals says he's still undecided. LOL

He was coming off n injury correct? Any updates on how he's looking in practice. Possible walk on to schollie candidate I assume.

Much of defense is about want-to. If he provides the effort to go along with the athleticism, then he could be a good role player early.

What was the nature of his injury? I knew Dix was coming off an injury, (and doing well), but I didn't know Nimmers was hurt.
Well during the first open session with media. Nimmers and Jelly just did bikes. I assume ankle.

If he stays I think he'll develop into a really good player. He scored almost 50 points in a game against Dubuque Hempstead which had a 6-11 center and a good forward who's now at Iowa on a baseball scholly. It was last Christmas holiday and almost nobody saw the game except Fran who was recruiting/watching the 6-11 guy.

Players like Amarion usually have one really bad weakness. Cannot say about the specific young man, and I haven't turned on much video of him either.

The other problem with PT this season is, of course, whose minutes would he take? Certainly not either point guard or Tony Perkins. Kris, Patrick, Payton will take the entire 40 minutes at the two forward positions. Still do not have confidence that Josh Dix can make it all the way back but if he does that leaves Amarion competing with a much larger player as a reserve 2. Hard to see where there will be many minutes available.

But, the Murrays and Tony have taught me patience with previously unknown recruits. Not judging until I see him play against live college competition.

Good insurance policy this year, if someone should get hurt. Otherwise, I see Ulis and Bowen at PG, with Connor or Perkins possibly getting a few min there. Perkins will get most min a SG. If Dix is ready, he will get most of the rest, with Bowen possibly getting some min there.

Exactly. I mean, the kid can do whatever he wants to. But I seriously have doubts that he really thought he would come to Iowa as a greyshirt and expect to be in the regular rotation his first year. You just outlined the situation. Two PG's, established guy at the 2 and 3. Plus Connor and Sandfordt as next in line at other perimeter spots.

Next year Connor is gone and the year after that Patrick McC is gone (assuming he doesn't take 6th year). Perkins would also have completed 4 years and is listed as a junior on the roster currently. He would have a COVID year if he wanted. No indication I've seen either way on his thinking. Who knows where Nimmers is at as a player in another year? He might be so good Fran has to play him. He might not. Let's just see how it plays out.

I see Nimmers as Washpun 2.0. He needs refinement, but is a KY type athlete. If we see him as a sophomore. or Jr , he will have made himself a much more complete player.

Nimmers did play in the scrimmage today and was described as "interesting". We all know he is lights out athletic, but a solid year of weight training, learning the system and getting up to speed with the college game will do him wonders. I too believe that he will eventually be a solid contributor to our team.
