Talent disparity counts.

I don't think the diagnosis is that complicated, but the treatment isn't easy or even likely to succeed in the near term.

  • Iowa is defensively deficient this is clear from the metrics and the eye test.
  • Iowa starting 5 are athletically deficient across the board.
  • Iowa starting 5 do not demonstrate good fundamental defensive skills as a team, and for most, individually
  • Iowa bench players, many of them, are better defensively while simultaneously having significant drop off offensively
They could be better with emphasis and dedication to fundamental defensive traits and with the expectation of effort on that end. They would not reach the level of a good defensive team(top 30 statistically) given their athletic deficiencies.

Team D efficiency in the kenpom 60s would seem to have been achievable. They didn't do what it took to get there. Improving enough to get to that level would mean a few more empty offensive possessions per game for the opponent which would likely turn some of these losses into wins.

This is just patently false. You need gifted athletes to be able to defend well in high level CBB, period. Most of Ohio State's guys aren't highly rated but they are still much better athletes than the roster Fran assembled. Holtman would never assemble a roster like Fran has because it's destined to be a shit show on the defensive end.

I think Fran has the athletes it’s just that their last name isn’t Mccaffrey.... he could overcome that by using his younger more athletic players!

I will say in all my crazy complaining, Patrick is a baller and I have no problem seeing him on the floor! Kid has a lot of potential!! Him KM are going to help win some games in the future! Along with JT, AU, AP, and Nunge.

I've been on the fence with PMac all season. It seemed early on that whenever he was on the court and got the ball, he was either going to shoot, drive, or force something, he seemed a little selfish with the ball. I haven't seen that as much so far later this season. He has talent for sure. I just want to see players who bring even just a little defensive intensity. Getting so sick of watching every other team we play bring their nuts on D against us, while our guys sag back, get beat off the dribble, and show zero hustle on defense. Also really tired of watching JorBo walk the ball up the court more worried about looking cool than running our offense.

Your numbers are WAY off. Did you just make them up? Ohio State only has 2 top 100 players and 3 guys who were 4 stars in total on their entire roster (and one of those 3 is only 17 years old and should be in HS). This is the result of Chris Holtman doing an absolutely INCREDIBLE job coaching. Holtman needs to pick up his recruiting a lot or they won't be able to sustain anything close to their level right now, and Juwaun Howard will absolutely destroy him in the coming years. They really have no business being rated top 5 like they will be next week if you go by the talent on their roster.

Lidell is a stud, Sueing is pretty good, but after that they really are a bunch of role players, none of which were highly rated. Lidell is their highest rated player by far and even he was only rated the 44th player in the country. They've actually had a ton of high ranked players leave, including their top 2 recruits just last year who would be 2 of the 3 highest rated players on their roster if they had stayed. Holtman doesn't put up with BS or attitude from anyone no matter their talent level. DJ Carton was their highest rated guy by far but was not happy he wasn't starting and playing major minutes from day one and left, same with Alonzo Gaffney.

None of this isn't to say Fran needs to do a much better job recruiting. His recruiting has been atrocious and the athleticism of his roster is severely lacking by B1G standards year in and year out.

Great post!

Iowa missed 8 freethrows and multiple front ends of one and ones.

Osu hit the same amount of 3s on the same amount of attempts and still would have lost if both teams made all their freethrows.

For all of your overly wordy desperate attempts to make people care about Iowas lack of athleticism the stats for that game we're essentially dead even.

OSU banks in a 3 and Keegan Murray misses an uncontested dunk and thats your difference in the game.
Agree on the banked 3 and the Murray miss.

It doesn’t take talent to close out on shooters and block out. It takes ds . Ch has enough “talent” to win these games

Agree. Desire and Coaching starts with Staff. Everybody on same PAGE can do wonders. Team wants to Win huh?

His recruiting has done more than fine. This a legit top 15 team in the country. He may have to coach them better

3 tourney wins in TEN YEARS? His record of recruiting African American players from outside the state of Iowa is a complete joke to anyone who‘s being honest.
