Tanners Bar and Grill in Ankeny

Ranallo's on 3rd might be the best Italian place in Polk county.
I really like Yanni's as well, and although some brag about their Sunday Brunch, I will not.
Leaning Tower of Pizza is my favorite pizza place although it's usually packed on weekends.
I occasionally enjoy Noodle Zoo, although since they raised the price of the Thursday night steak special, I don't go on Thursday's anymore!:)
Ranallo's spinach and artichoke dip is the best I've ever had. One thing I've never had that my wife insists on is a Clipper taco.

I would agree with this. We lived in the Boston metro for years, Iowa City for years, and Ankeny for years along with a few other cities. Each has its pros and cons. Will Des Moines let alone Ankeny ever match Boston for dining and entertainment options? Obviously not. However, shopping options have become irrelevant with the advent of Amazon and online retailing. And, I would much rather live in and bring kids up through public schools in Ankeny. There is something to be said for cheap real estate, lots of parks, and an overall existence in the absence of human and traffic congestion. That is why I don't the growth West in the metro and all of the headaches it brings for many commuting to work. The traffic is objectively horrible whenever there is an accident or the slightest of hiccup with regard to construction. To me it is giving up the one of the great selling points of living here with little in return. On other hand, it is not unusual to kite to and from Ankeny without hitting the brakes.
Des Moines area has a certain charm to it. It's definitely improved, and obviously Ankeny is expanding like crazy. It's actually a pretty great area to live in, if you ask me. I agree the traffic is crazy to the west, but i've seen worse. The one thing Des Moines needs more of, is places to take kids. I got spoiled in St. Louis with that aspect.

Oh I agree there is worse traffic, Boston would be exhibit A. It is just voluntarily subjecting yourself to it is what I don't get. Same goes a little bit with living in far west Ankeny. If I lived out there it would add 10 minutes each way round trip to my commute. Not THAT big of a deal but the minutes add up and turn into hours per week of lost productivity or free time. I love living on the NE side. Also agree on things to do with kids comparison to St. Louis, which is chock full of awesome stuff...

It may be 40 years since I've used them but my fists still work!;)
maybe to punch your own chest during your angina attacks, old man.

It was worth it to revisit this thread just to hear Ankeny people discuss the crappy chains they frequent, and the other chains that their chains are close to. Well done!

St Louis/St Louis suburbs are chock full of awesome stuff....when comparing it to the outlying Des Moines suburbs.

Congrats on having more non-chain food restaurants in an area with 600k+ more residents? Really something to make one feel proud.

I live right near a Tanners in omaha and naturally go there. The waitress is always hitting on me. She also makes the tab real cheap.

You're trying way too hard. Nearly everyone here said the options are limited.

This thread highlights the popularity of chain restaurants and general blandness in the suburbs. There's a reason crappy restaurants are popular there-that's what people want in those locales.

How does this "highlight" that? Most people here are complaining about it and trying to list some good non-chain options, wtf are you talking about?

There's a reason so many crappy chain restaurants are in Ankeny and thrive-people that live in places like Ankeny prefer those types of places. Get it now?

That has nothing to do with your original post, nice strawman genius. Damn this guy is dumb af.

I'm not sure you are being serious? When it was good, Ranallos was just OK. It has not been good for awhile. Barattas, Noah's, Latin King, Cozi are all way better.

New Spanish place DT, Lurra Cacina that is pretty good. For the Ankeny peeps that like Thai Flavors, their mothership in DSM is much better, Cool Basil.

Also, the Bear reopened and its pretty good.

I've lived elsewhere as well (NYC metro and Chicago both city and suburbs) and Des Moines doesn't have anywhere near the food, cultural, or sports options. Of course, there are a lot of great things about the area too. Don't think anybody will disagree with that, but we'll see...

Sorry to disappoint you. I realize your fat ass will probably lead to numerous heart problems but some of us keep ourselves in shape.
