Agreed, but her pursuing a dream to play for the IA Hawkeyes and still not consume a scholarship this upcoming year is possible, as I understand it, via a Gray Shirt scholarship (see below, posted in another thread)....
The gray shirt scholarship (as another poster also suggested) is a perfect fit for Ava Jones and her situation. It appears, Ava would postpone her enrollment until spring semester (giving her another semester to rehab both physically and mentally at home) and then enter IA as a part-time student. She wouldn't be allowed to practice with the team next spring but she likely physically can't anyway. She still would still be at the U of I rehabbing, hanging around with the team, and very much a part of the team (as much as can be expected) next spring semester when the B1G and NCAA title runs will occur. She wouldn't be on scholarship counting towards the 15.
This type of scholarship offer looks like it's written for this situation and is in Ava's best interest; which should be the overriding consideration.
Grayshirt scholarship offer
This is one of the more challenging offers from a college coach. A grayshirt is an incoming college freshman who postpones enrollment for a semester. Instead of enrolling right away in the fall, a grayshirt freshman enrolls in classes for the second term (winter) of freshman year. During their first semester of college, a grayshirt does not enroll as a full-time student. Instead, they only take part-time classes. A grayshirt also does not join the team, practice with the team or receive a scholarship during their first, part-time semester.
