Expect a TR Foley blog about these two photos. He will probably explain how Iowa wrestlers don't ever have fun and how winning is a matter of life and death to them.

I think it probably sums up the two teams' feelings about the tournament. Iowa felt they lost it while Ohio State just felt fortunate to be a part of it, especially considering that a win by Telford would mean that Iowa wins the tournament outright.

mark me down as one that doesn't understand why they never smile. The tough exterior has not won a championship the last 4 years. A frown does not mean that Iowa will be training harder for the next week. If i was an iowa wrestler I would be smiling all the way back to Iowa city knowing that they wrestled like poop for the most part and still won. Just wait till they are wrestling well.

I guess the acting tough bit is just not for me. Show your real emotion and stop pretending. I honestly don't see any advantage to the not smiling mindset. It is not intimidating, in fact its a little goofy to me. Maybe if they smiled it would show them how good it feels to be on top thus giving them motivation to work harder and be on top at nationals

FYI I also think the mustashes are dumb and I hate how Iowa guys always run off the Mat when getting their hand raised.

The psychological edge under gable no longer exsists. So now its time to figure out the brands style

I don't disagree totally with some of your points but who in that photo do you think should be smiling? The four finalists lost their shot at being champs. Jeba got teched and probably felt like if he'd just got majored they win it outright. Kelly and Moore laid an egg. Brooks lost after being the #1 seed. I don't see any of the other guys being happy about not being champions...Clark, Evans, Burak? They all hoped to be champs.
I get what you're saying, I just think they honestly probably feel they all underachieved.

I thought you were a dumbass the other day when you said I was a fu@$ing moron, you just removed all doubt. Name one guy on Iowas team that is happy about 2nd place. None of them were conference champs. If you think any of those guys are happy with 2nd place then you have no idea about Iowa wrestling.

Just sayin........

If you were an Iowa wrestler you would understand why they aren't smiling. Let's hope they are smiling in St. Louis. Take a look at some of the NCAA championship pictures when the Hawks won the title - you will see some guys not smiling. Hmm wonder why.

It's an individual sport. Iowa went 2-5 in the final round in matches wrestled (Brooks "won" by forfeit) and in the process pissed away an outright team title. I'm more surprised at people that don't get why they're not happy. Additionally, if you add into the fact that the senior class never won an outright B1G team title or individual championship, you can further understand the disappointment. I'll excuse them for not being over the moon.

Who says it is an act or that they are pretending to not be happy? Maybe they are truly disappointed that they didn't do better? We didn't have a single champ, so that means that all 10 wrestlers could have done better. One more win, one more bonus pt, one less loss or bonus pt given up to an OSU wrestler would have made the difference in winning the tournament and not (which is how the team views a tie).

This x 1,000,000

I probably dont know the guys as well as some of you, but from the pictures I can tell

Iowa - Kelly, Telford, Jeva, Evans, Sorensen. Why on earth would any of them be smiling after the round/last match they had? Evans maybe, but lets face it, Evans has always been a little different in terms of attitude.

Ohio State - Stieber and Tomasello - pretty sure they have a great reason to be smiling, and I dont know the rest of their team by picture.

I can't disagee with any of this. None of them had a good reason to be excited other than winning the tourney. I would compare this to a quarterback, they might throw 3 ints in a game but you dont see them frowning on the sidelines until they win the superbowl. They have to have a short memory in order to succeed. I think this might apply to our wrestlers as well.

They carry every loss on their shoulders. This can prevent them from making the same mistake but it can also put so much pressure on them that they crack.

If they put in the work and know they are in peak form I don't see why they can't be loose, relaxed and smiling. It seems that Iowa stresses the focused, determined, not content with anything but first mindset so much that our wrestlers wrestle uptight. They have the weight of the season riding on each shot and that is a lot to handle. Some excel under pressure but many do not. gable was good at finding what motivates each individual, so far i can not say the same for brands. (I am not hating on brands here either as very few are great at this)

Short memory is one thing, but it does not apply here imo. Name one quarterback who threw 3/an interception and was smiling immediately after it when he walked off the field when he hadn't won anything yet?.! They do not HAVE to have a short memory to succeed....they can remember it in detail and use it as a lesson, fuel to the fire and succeed just as easily.

I would think most highly competitive people could tell you, in detail, there most painful losses and reflect on what caused them but spend very little time truly relishing a win.

I don't think this particular photo portrays a team that is carrying every loss on their shoulders but rather a true snap shot of exactly what their emotions are at that particular time. Frankly I would be more concerned if they were satisfied with their results at this tournament. EVERY wrestler to a man could have made the difference by a half point and then I would still like them looking to the NCAA tourney before they pat themselves on the back.

You want to put a positive spin on it and release some pressure?? Came up 2nd at National Duals, Tied for 1st at the Bigs, so they are building toward an outright title at the NCAA's. 2 weeks to go, plenty of room to improve....keep your eye on the prize and GO HAWKS.

It was me, but you are still stupid for the crap you spewed here about the "never smile."

Seriously, look at those guys in the picture and see how their tournament/last match went. I wouldnt be smiling either

Different team histories and expectations produce different responses to the co championship. OSU has not won a share in the big title in 50 years, and they were in their arena with their fans. Hawks have been at the top a lot over the years and are disappointed when they don't meet their expectations. Different perspectives...

This is just an awful post. I was there and can tell you not a single fan, coach or wrestler were smiling and for good reason. Fans went there to watch Iowa win the title. The wrestlers went there to win individual titles. Neither happened and tying with a guy like Tom Ryan was terrible. The rest of your garbage doesn't deserve a response.
