Apparently Tennessee didn't think a jump from 2.4 to 4 million per year was worth it for Nico. He is now in the transfer portal.

Honestly, I love it. Caving in here would set a precedent that Tennesse would have to follow from here on out with other guys. Good for Coach Heupel.

$8 million over 4 years is a ton of money. I don't feel sorry for Nico.

Another article stated the contract would have been $10 mil over its lifetime. Apparently he received $$$ while still in high school

also stated he tried to go to Oregon but they said “no we’re good”

Lmao

What a mess.

Family agrees to a deal which gave him $2m upfront and $8m more over 4 years and daddy tries to get them to bump the deal halfway through by using other programs to raise the price.

What daddy didn’t think through is that Oregon already has a young QB they like and that Lanning would let Heupel know pops is shopping his son.

That’s some piss poor parenting and it may come back to bite hard.

Yep. Probably going to cost the genius some money. I'd laugh if he never played again, but I'm sure someone will grab him.

Gotta love this happened to Tennessee here too as it is not like they have exactly cared to do things in ethically anyway. Remember, when this contract took place it was against the rules to use NIL to recruit players. Everyone knew it was b.s. of course, but UT pretty much threw up their middle finger to all of that and then even went to court over it. Now look what they have done. Good for all involved, I hope they all lose.

Oh, and also in the bizarro world of semi-pro ball that somehow out of this Dan Lanning and Oregon are being painted as the moral compass. Now that is rich.

I hope it all burns down at this point. Seriously, I would love to see what happens when all the money runs out.

Maybe thr agent pushed too? He is only one year into his deal and already begging for more? Just stay the course and earn $10MM. Stupid.

Tennessee is moving on from starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, ending a high-stakes standoff that had engulfed the program just days.

I guess that he can't go to another SEC school so he's got some limitations. On one hand, I don't blame him for trying to maximize his income. On the other hand, I think he went about it all wrong. Carson Beck and another QB (who's name escapes me) were making $3M. So he's trying to more than leapfrog them. And, he reached out to Oregon behind TN's back and got burned. What's the saying... "Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered."

He agreed to the long term deal. I hope his career goes in the shatter. Love the pigs / hogs saying, one of my favs

Glad Tennessee did this......was shocked to be honest.....I mean they pay $10 million for a coach and had a $8 million or more agreement with the QB but I guess maybe they found their limit. All this being said I hope Tennessee fails this coming year. Love seeing the teams that pay more not succeed.....It won't stop anything but gives me SOME gratification for a bit.

USC
Colorado
Oregon
Ohio State
Michigan
Don't think OSU or Michigan as they have great young QBs and don't want to scare any of them away. USC and Oregon could be a different story though. My bet is on USC

What did you just say? "I don't blame him"? Really? Regardless of this current crap show, the kid still evidently had a contract with his team (no matter how illegal that probably was in itself), and one year in he wants it ripped up so he can extort twice as much. The only way this could be better is he never plays another down in college or the league. It's way past time for more teams to start backing this crap show up....

Lanning was reportedly the one who let Tennessee know their starting QB was shopping his services. Not something you do if you want to steal a player. The Miami coach publicly said no thanks. Michigan is paying a phenom and a fifth year senior. Ohio State lost a five star to South Carolina because he wasn't going to see the field. USC is in the same boat.

UCLA, Texas Tech or maybe UCF. Heck maybe Syracuse, but I doubt it. McCord worked out pretty well for them.

I don't see Notre Dame being a fit. Nico isn't a lifetime domer or a great team first guy. Hartman and Riley were transfers but they were Notre Dame for life after getting there.

Was making plenty of money. No loyalty. Weak mentality. He's not going to be as good of a player as he could be since he focuses mostly on money.
So, just to be clear. You wouldn't leave your current job if someone else was willing to pay you double because of your loyalty to your current company?

Not exactly the same scenario since (as far as we know) there was no higher offer. But yes the whole loyalty aspect is vastly overblown in most things in life.

If I had a contract, I would honor it.

As for this kid….someone will take him. But he won’t be getting $4 million.

The $10 million comes from university, the $8 million doesn't, does it?

This kid doesn't have a contract though. I don't particularly like his way of asking for more money but until there are contracts, we will see this type of stuff from time to time. The kid is just trying to get the most he can. Money above all else. That’s the new religion, it appears unfortunately.

If one felt they were underpaid by say 50%, we would all do the same thing.
