Just think if the hawkeyes hadn't been reading these threads they wouldn't have played good defense...or JBo would not have hit a couple threes...or the Hawks wouldn't have outrebounded PSU in the second half...unfortunately McCaffery's substitution patterns were still horrible because Iowa didn't get the win...oh wait...they did

I actually thought his substitution patterns were fine. Still have to figure out what to do against tough defenses. Too many possessions where the ball slowly moved around the perimeter ending in a last second chucked 3.

However, to Fran's credit, most of that was the first half and they adjusted a little better (and actually made more 3s). Defense has been great recently.

Also, Filip has to have people backing off him. He's getting boards and working hard down low. I admit that I was pretty down on him, especially against talented bigs, but he's finding his way. Glad he's a Hawk.

Fail

I just want to see the twins, Perkins, Joe T, and Uhlis out there. That is some straight up D with good offense sets.

Pretty silly post OP. Fans clamor for Kris to get more time as Fran only played him 11 minutes last 2 games.

Kris gets 20 minutes and is big reason we won the game. Fact is if Fran goes back to playing Kris less than 20 minutes the complaints will be deservedly twice as loud.

...and the one time after a long time that Pat is finally looking to be in the flow of the game, he pulls him after the first timeout, when the starters have typically been staying in until the second.

Mind-blowing.

It looks like he doesn’t play favorites with his kids based on that move. The thing is we don’t know if Patrick asked out due to conditioning, or if he was pulled for not rebounding or for something else.

It's Penn freaking State, man.

They aren't exactly good

This is the best piece of satire I’ve ever read. 🤔

Exactly. We don't don't know why McCaffery makes the moves he does. I suspect he is watching the game somewhat differently than we are sitting on our lazyboys at home or in the stands. Then you throw in all the time he spends with them at practice and I'm thinking he just might know more about this team and the individual players than we do. The Hawks have won seven out of the last nine. They haven't always looked great doing it, (and had one potentially stolen from them) but maybe we should give them a little credit.

You guys are so funny.

Thank God you don't post very often because you are fvcking terrible at it.

You are not funny, not clever, not intelligent and definitely not interesting.

Great - now go do it against a team w/ a pulse........

Either Ulis is going to have start looking 4 and making some 3s or they 2nd unit backcourt is going to see a lot of packed in zone.

Think that's why Fran went more with JBo at PG with Perkins in 2nd half.

Good point. I don't understand what happens to these guys when they come to Iowa after being able to shoot in high school. Watch this clip of Ulis confidently pulling 3's, taking jumpers and driving. This is the player I thought we were getting. Big adjustment from high school to college, but he should still be able to shoot right? Ulis has the frame and athleticism to be a match up problem. I wish he would be more aggressive.

It's part of the question the fans have about Fran. If a kid has confidence/ isn't worried about making mistakes, they can perform at a higher level.
Fran seems to bench guys for making mistakes when other players are given a long leash. What affect does this have on each individual player. It appears from the outside that Fran tends to kill some kids spirits. Except for Joe T, as much as Fran has tried to bury him on the bench, Joe (God bless him) still appears to be confident.

Yes, Fran has his favorites who never get benched for defensive lapse or turnover or missed shot--JBO, CMAC, PMac. Fran said he was grooming CMAC to be more of a shooter/scorer this year...why would you pick a guy with 20% career shooting percentage to be a scorer--oh yeah, he's your kid. PMAC has been groomed to be a perimeter player because Fran knows he's too soft to guard anyone inside.

Then he has Kris M. who gets pulled 1 or 2 min into his PT even though he is way better than PMAC...or JoeT in past...and they often get left on bench for long times. JoeT is tough as nails.....it is somewhat surprising he never got frustrated and transferred out.

Unfortunately we have fans like the OP that don't care if Iowa ever wins a sweet16, or BTT championship, or conference title...they really are the worst fans because they don't ask for excellence or improvement.

98% of the players they matched up against in high school aren't playing D1 ball,.. As a result, the defense they encounter in D1 is far superior to what they saw in High School.

What? Joe is a starter.....Fran knows how to correct mistakes, develop players, and promote confidence. Joe T is a prime example. Joe had a terrible turnover, out of control problem...NOT having turnovers is a part of Fran's philosophy.

Joe now appears to be playing at a very high level....great job by Fran and Joe to help push towards his potential, though he is not there yet.

To be a high level coach (like Fran) it seems to me that you have to be able to balance the ability to instill discipline and promote confidence.....Fran does that. I think, my guess is, that he talks to each of his guys. They know what is expected and what to expect out of him. I think fans might look at only what they see in games and judge him from that. By all accounts, I have heard on more than one occasion, that Fran is pretty low key in practice....not someone who rips players by any means....most of their time is spent in practice and meetings. Games are a very small percentage of the coach-player interaction.

If Fran is a "high level coach" what would you name coach's who win big ten titles and/or more than 1 tournament game?
