He got ejected on purpose IMO. Thank you for 15 solid years. He knows it's over and I am now convinced it is. His players love him and it's apparent with how hard they've battled for him with all the adversity this season. It's time though for both parties.

He knows he's leaving one way or another and wanted to get his say in on what a piece of crap the officiating has been all year.
That's just my take.

Precisely this was intentional. It wouldn't surprise me if he told them to eject him. That was mild.

I get there was no sweet 16 appearance but there were a lot of great wins, players, and moments during the Fran tenure. It’s time for a change but there shouldn’t be any ill will. Not to mention- the attendance at carver was bad even when they were ranked in previous years.

Precisely where I'm at and always have been. It's pathetic the ones who are so clueless. Reminds me of things in the HBOT area.

My first thought was Fran was paying tribute to Gene Hackman in Hoosiers when his character got ejected from a game. Then I thought he did it to fire up his team, which coaches sometimes do. But realistically I think Fran knows he’s done and wanted to go out on his terms.
Great call! 👍

I have no ill will towards Fran at all and wish him all the best assuming he is in fact done here. He picked up this program following the Lickliter mess, and made it competitive again. Just couldn't really get much done in the postseason, unfortunately.

It's just run it's course and it's time for fresh blood.

Well said - agreed!

Unfortunately playing his son in front of a future NBAer has left a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouth…including yours truly. 😉

Crazy thing is…..what could he have said to get 2 T’s like that? Players use the F word all the time with no repercussions at all. ESPN shows it daily

yeah, sure Fran is the victim, probably just gave 2 T's quickly for no reason

That’s unresponsive to my observation, but I get it that you hate Iowa’s lack of basketball success in our life times.
Davis had a Sweet 16 and an Elite 8 at BC as well. Yeah he was set up for success when he came to Iowa, but Davis absolutely had more success in the NCAA Tournament than Fra. Not to mention the Sweet 16 in '99 and that '93 team probably gets at least to the S16 if they had not lost Chris Street.

Not an original thought here as others have posted it but Fran really lost the fan base when the boys went through the program. He had done just enough to get by up to that point. What does he really leave behind as a legacy other than his reputation as a players coach?

Fran had a solid run at IA with largely positive results but certainly negatives...

Positive
  • Pulled the program out of the Lick years abyss
  • Excellent recruiter especially the "diamonds in the rough" given mediocre level of resources at IA
  • Excellent player development
  • Excellent offensive coach including OOB plays (some of the best I've seen from any coach)
  • Consistently finished in top half of the BIG
  • Consistently got IA into the NCAA tourney - 7 out of 9 seasons & would've been 8 out of 10 if not for COVID (as I recall)
  • Positive impacts in the IA, Coaching, and Charity communities
  • Passionate about hoops
  • His players love him

Negative
  • NCAA tournament results (which is huge, no doubt)
  • Defense
  • Rebounding
  • In game adjustments and player management
  • Roster management
  • Mixed results in BTT (offset by the one BTT title)
  • PG recruiting and development
  • Embarrassing on-court behavior many times

I'd be hard pressed to argue Fran isn't a top 5 coach at IA (in order IMO): 1) Olson, 2) Miller, 3) O'Connor, 4) Davis, 5) McCaffrey.

All that being said, it's time for a change. I thank him for what he's done for the program!

lol. Doesn’t matter who he did them with. I’d say fran got lucky with the Murray’s and Luka. Their families were the key to their success.
Fran is a good coach and did fine here. Hats off to him identifying the Murray's regardless of their Dad. This board was skeptical and I'm being nice. When he offered them

It is a strange thought process that some people give Fran credit for turning Garza and Murrays into the players they were and ignoring Frank Garza and Kenyon Murray contribution. You would think if Fran the family man would be able to develop Garza and the Murray's he should have been able to teach PMAC to play defense or rebound or CMAC how to to shoot.

The Fran Era was okay. High basement, low ceiling. Some good moments. Time to move on. He seems to be a good family man, decent person. Classy move is to agree to reduced buyout and leave on good terms with fans.

Combined with the unwillingness to change and adapt... The lack of any sort of consistent defense, poor late game execution, letting teams go on prolonged runs without timeouts... it's just all become so frustrating and predictable.

I've said it before and I will say it again:

Fran would have likely had a statue outside Carver if he taught defense and rebounding.

Edit: That wasn't meant to be a rip on Fran in a positive thread. He did lots of positive things for the University, the program and the community, and I am truly thankful for all of that.

I so agree with the OB plays. I wonder if one of the assistants are more in charge of those?
