It is my hope that someday, those who didn't experience that UNLV game (the FIRST half haha) can experience the feeling of our basketball team being that close to the final four.

Not just seed watching, or questions regarding how good we really are.

This is that incredible feeling of "this is actually happening". There really is no substitute for actually experiencing that moment.

I do realized the 2nd half of that game makes the '87 squad a questionable example, but to put this in context, that's the team I was around for in terms of age.

That year, I heard many times "what if" Iowa would ever play UNLV. What a freaking game that would be. And then bam it happened. And bam we were crushing it especially right before the half.

There hasn't been a team or situation since that has even come close. You got the feeling with that team, that enough talent was mixed in with that crazy full court defense, that a wildcard was just thrust into the tournament. And no matter the opposing talent is involved, Iowa was a force to be reckoned with.

The weird thing is, after the game, there was this feeling of hope like the "next year" vibe. But, I also read many columns that were basically "this is the closest we may get winning it all in a long, long time". And turns out, that was spot on. The combination of seeding and match-ups that year just lined up for that team.

I haven't been a Fran hater. But after last nights game, he better make some adjustments in recruiting philosophy and match that better to his methodology. And fast. Bottom line, harsh as it sounds.

Hope we can get within 3 points of the final four this year wouldn't that be something :)

I was a student at Iowa for the ‘80 Final Four team. How do you think I feel?

My first exposure to Iowa basketball was the best Iowa team of all time....the ‘69-70 Six Pack.
1969-70 was also my first exposure to Iowa basketball. Damn was it fun getting together with friends, drinking beer, watching that final four run in 1980.

I was 11 years old for the ‘69-70 team. My dad used to deliver the hot dog/hamburger buns for the FB and BB games and would get my brother and I in. That team was such fun to watch.

That 87 team was amazing. BJ, Gamble, Marble, Lohous, Horton, Jones, and Jepsen all played at least a little in the NBA. Add in Wright, Moe, Lorenzen, and Reeves and you had the best Iowa team in my lifetime. No Fran team would come within 20 of that team in 10 chances.

Jeff Moe > than JBo

If JBo was our 6th man coming off the bench the way Moe was on the '87 team, then he would be in the perfect role for his skill set.

Gerry Wright > Tyler Cook

Those were the first teams I remember ever watching I was under the impression that what Iowa basketball was and thought it would always be... and we’ve just never got back to that level.. :(

I was in my 2nd year at Iowa for that 69-70 team. It was a great time for Hawkeye BB. But so was 45, 55, 56, 79, 80, 83, 87, 88 and 99. It has been a long 20 years since.

I felt it was always going to be the way it was from 78-79 until 88-89 seasons. 10 NCAA bids in 11 years. 4 sweet 16's or higher. Always competitive in NCAA tournament games. Not as many bids given out then. Didn't go to 64 teams until I believe 1985.

86-87 was my freshman year, largely first in depth view of Iowa basketball and was the perfect storm of Raveling recruiting and Dr Tom system and coaching. I was on spring break in California, stopped to watch the Iowa UNLV game at a bar near San Diego. I remember jawing with UNLV fans prior and during first half, I was on cloud 9 as we dominated first half. 2nd half was the cliche 'play not to lose' and we let a huge opportunity slip away. What a gut punch, still hurts 30 years later. Yeah yeah CSB.

Yeah, we went down to Tucson for the first round games. We beat Santa Clara rather easily. Then UTEP played Lute's Arizona team. Of, course the games were at the McKale Center on U of A campus. We were seated near the UTEP crowd and rooted for them vs. the Arizona home team. UTEP had Tim Hardaway and " Jeep " Jackson ( who died of a cocaine OD the following summer ) and trailed late in the game when Lute went to the " 4 corners. " UTEP came back, tied it and won in OT. Arizona fans were the insufferable DBs back then too, harassing the UTEP'ers, who got the last laugh. We were fortunate to get by UTEP by 2.

We had 7 NBA players on the roster to their 2. We had five guys averaging in double figures to their six. If Jackson had not died it likely would be another NBA player...

I think this was, top to bottom, the most talented team Iowa ever put on the floor. Speed, quickness, tough defense and great offense. I thought we had a chance to win a national championship that year.
