Last night I posted that I had decided to not attend the Big Tens. Wow! It only took 2 minutes and I had my "True Fan" card revoked! For about 4 or 5 years now I have only been a fair weather fan. I had no idea we were so despised. When I used to go to the NCAA's it was very common that all the other schools fans would cheer for the opponent of the Iowa wrestler. Do they still do that? I always thought they were just jealous because of Iowa's success. Then I heard it explained that it was because they didn't like Iowa's loud, obnoxious and rude fans. I never saw any evidence of that behavior but after reading some of the comments on my previous post I am beginning to think that those reports could be credible. No Czech Hawk I'm not interesting in following the WWE, no Aschief32 I'm not buying any Penn State gear, but thanks for the link. No, Mr. Squarehat I'm not inclined to have sex with myself.

Listen "True Fans", I have a long history of supporting wrestling with my time and money. I'm confident that I've been to more wrestling events than 95% of you. I'm talking pee wee, high school meets, high school tournaments, Division I, II, and III, freestyle and greco tournaments. I'll never forget watching Brooks Simpson pinning Iowa States defending national champion at Carver. They say Carver has never been as loud. I believe that kept Iowa's winning streak at Carver alive. What a moment! I was at the Northern Open in Madison and saw freshman Lincoln Mac beat Torrae (sp) Jackson. I was at the Northern Iowa tournament as a freshman Cael Sanderson get beat by an Iowa wrestler, I think it was Paul Jenn. I thought that this Sanderson kid isn't going to be so great! Another Northern Iowa tournament was held in the small Price Lab School gym in Cedar Falls. Okie State sent a group of their freshmen and Tom Brands and Alan Fried started their rivalry. It was a high scoring match, something like 11 to 13. For some reason I can't remember who won. I'm thinking Fried. I seem to recall Pat Smith and Tom Ryan in a match there. I saw Ray Brinzer being coached by Gumby at the Jr. Nationals in the Unidome. I was at a tournament in La Crosse and saw a high school Joe Williams pin a kid in 9 seconds. . Before computers I would drive 50 miles at night so I could receive a signal from KXIC and listen to Tom Lepic, Maury Adams, and Bobcat describe Iowa wrestling action. Hey, are there any lawyers out there who would be willing to help me appeal my "True Fan" card revocation? I could pay with some neat autographed Dan Gable memorabilia!

I'll acknowledge that I've lost some interest in Iowa wrestling for a variety of reason. A growing family requires time, new hobbies and completing many projects that I've started. The main reason I'm not attending the Big Tens is because I'm sick and tired of watching the program under perform and not seeing aggressiveness and fight I understand everyone can't perform like Rico Chiapparli (sp), Mark Ironside, or David Taylor, ( OK, now True Fan will send me more Penn State links)l Just go down swinging. Ok hot shot "Real Fan" I'll tolerate your "looking down your nose", "find a new team", "never was a real fan", "don't need you there" attitude because you are a wrestling fan. I know it will come as a shock to you but wrestling needs all the fans it can attract, even us fair weather fans. I hope you enjoy the Big Tens and that Iowa will crown 10 champs. (I'm thinking 1). I hope everyone wrestles over their seed at the NCAAs . I'll be in the timber cutting next years firewood and enjoying myself. OK let the loser talk begin!

Good job if this is really how you feel. You don't need the fan base on this board to approve or disapprove. I'm also tired of the way our upper weights have wrestled the last few years. I can't under stand how our coaches can't teach a kid to "TRY" and shoot. Even if he gets clobbered you have to learn to do something different. We just aren't getting the top recruits the last four or five years like the old days. I'm going to the B10's but not expecting much after last nights loss.

I had been planning to attend the B10's and Nationals for quite some time. I'm still going to both. I really doubt that there are many people who had truly planned to go to either of these tournaments before Monday night that are now choosing not to go. I completely understand the frustration that many in the fanbase are feeling today (and have felt for the past 5 years); I grew up loving the perennial champion Iowa Hawkeye wrestling teams...call me complacent, but I love our teams just as much now as I did in the golden years. I always will. I don't think we have a meaningful shot at winning a team title at either tournament this year, but we have some great kids on the team that I expect will give us some incredible moments over the next month to cheer for loudly and proudly. I'm also very optimistic about our chances of closing the gap with PSU over the next few years with the combination of the studs in our current lineup plus the impressive pipeline of incoming recruits.

Now more than ever, it's us (Iowa Hawkeye wrestling) against the world. I'm looking forward to wearing the black and gold and cheering louder and prouder than ever.

Couldn't agree more with both of those statements. I was the first person to call SanVicente's fandom into question on his other thread. My response was because by the tone of his post it seemed like he was planning on going to B1Gs all year, until after the NC State dual and then decided to throw in the towel on the hawks after one meet. So i apologize If i got the wrong tone from you.

I'm not an old fan by any means, I've only been involved with the sport since 2009/2010 season, when I first fell in love with the hawkeyes as a HS FR.. Even though the teams the past 5 years haven't been nearly as dominant as the 2010 team I first saw or the teams of the 80s/90s, I've still loved those teams. Heck probably one of my all time favorite Hawks is Derek St. John, and he wasn't on any title winning teams. The hawks have still given me a ton to cheer for in the last 5 years. I'm glad I got to watch and cheer for McDonough, Ramos, St. John, Telford, Evans, Lofthouse squared, Marion(one of my all time favorite matches is his comeback against Andrew Alton 11-9 at rec Hall when Iowa upset Penn state). Heck I know Dziewa drove a ton of people on here crazy but I really liked Dziewa (I'm sure people would be pretty happy to have Dziewa at 141 this season). Most people who have seen me post know that I'm usually pretty optimistic and Iowa homer in most of my predictions, but I try to keep them based in reality. So my mentality is more of a hawkeye purist who will cheer for the team put on the mat no matter what the ranking, because I love this coaching staff, and the guys on the team. Gilman, Clark, and Sorensen are slowly pushing their way up my list of hawkeye favorites.

Now maybe it's because I wasn't around in the gable championship Eras so I'm not quite as spoiled, but every season I know that Tom & Terry will put a team on the mat that will contend for an NCAA title, and bring back a team trophy regardless if they win or not. We're still pretty lucky to have that. Recruiting is picking up and this off season of recruiting will probably determine if we can get back to our winning ways sooner rather than later. We need some impact guys this off season like Lee, Berge, Warner(182), or Singletary(195). All top 10 recruits in their class.

Sorry for my rant, I kinda went in a lot of different directions, but my point is OP, if you have been around that long then you know the ebb and flow of NCAA powers, and I just think we should all get behind our Hawks 100% and cheer for them until the season is over and then begin off season criticisms. We will be back on top of the mountain as long as we have the Brands brothers coaching this team.

One of the first posts on this board was starting a thread about how you're not going to the B1G instead of adding to the multitude of other threads that were in play that were being critical of Iowa.

Second post is to try and establish your fan creds.

Which I say to both, who cares? Enjoy the wood chopping.

To recap:
  • You will not be attending Big 10s because you use to be an Iowa wrestling fan but don't support them anymore because they don't dominate and win.
  • Some Hawks fans don't think you are a real fan.
  • These fans annoy you stating they are better fans but you state you are more of a fan and list several reasons why.
  • You aren't a loser and will be chopping wood during big 10's.
I don't think you are a loser but I'm not sure the reason for you to join a hawkeye message board and make you're first posts other than to draw attention to yourself and rip on Iowa wrestling. You've now got the attention you wanted - enjoy it. There are plenty of "good" fans who aren't happy with some things in the program but still support them and can get their points across without a lot of bitching. In my book those are good fans also but those who just want to pout and bitch are either babies or attention whores not losers.

Great post. If this would have been your first post instead of starting a thread about not coming to Big Tens immediately following Iowa's first and only loss of the season, then I believe it would have been received as you had intended.

You appear to be a real fan, but your timing was very questionable for the last thread.

Just complete BS from start to finish. He is the biggest Hawk fan who has seen all the great wrestlers of the past thirty years (and more matches than 95% of us). Including Cael Sanderson's only loss. But he is not certain who beat him ("I think it was Paul Jenn"). As if that is a topic he has never discussed with anyone ever since. Nice effort. A couple bought it.

Yes, it was Paul Jenn

I'm 68 years old. I have seen a lot of wrestling. I'm not as obsessed about as I once was. I still follow the sport and always hope Iowa does well. I don't claim to be the world's biggest Hawk wrestling fan, I am now just a fair weather fan. Things change as you get older. Everything I posted is true. I have no desire to get into an argument but just what is it that is bs about my post? I probably did over react with my first post but this is Iowa and we got beat by North Carolina State in Carver. Almost too hard to believe. Well, things change and they may now have the better team, at least on that night.

It's a message board, so you can say pretty much anything you want. The level of emotion after a lose like that is through the roof for a lot of fans, and for cool PSU and OKST fans, and for you trolls too, I will let you in on a secret, it's not just Iowa fans.

Cowboy fans need only look back to last seasons loss to Iowa at GIA, PSU'er, while BWI is more heavily moderated and posters are kept in check and discouraged from infighting and being too critical of the mothership, there was always heavy criticism of the Altons and real anger with the red shirt decision putting the streak in jeopardy.

So I guess my point is, we all have passionate fans, some are doom and gloom, some are grass is greener, some are light at the end of the tunnel and some are introspective while others use humor....and in my opinion, it's all good, that's why we come here to share thoughts and ideas and compare emotions. My first thought after we got ragdolled at 141 was to jump on here and see if people were as pissed as I was. They Were. So I did not take any offense to your post, or the posts that TNT need to go or that it's M* fault, okay, I did take offense to "trying to hire Carl" comments, if for no other reason than giving trolls like Jimmy Witherton II or Franklin Retains Constipation more troll bait.

But I do take offense to your 3rd post, when you explain your POV and then end your post with "OK let the loser talk begin!". You have a good story, I will take you at your word and believe it, but adding an insult at the end to everyone who took the time to read it? Serious tool move.

Great point about letting message boards be what they are -- a gathering of lots of fans from varying backgrounds with different points of view and different views on life in general. As you say, you get all kinds of personalities -- some more optimistic, some more pessimistic, some in between, etc. The only thing that really irritates me is when posters come on here trying to dictate to others how they should post -- especially the "true fan" types who like to jump on the board during or immediately after a horrible performance by the team and start ripping on anyone who has the audacity to lament the current or recent event. The ignore button was pretty much invented for those types, IMO. At least that's how I use it.

I'm going watch the BIg 10 am looking forward to it. That said if the Hawks don't have any finalists, why would I want to see how many Champs PSU crowns? Just saying, you gotta have someone to watch wrestle or its just killing time.

The thing I hate is exactly how this guy represented himself along with the boatload of "fans" who jump on here only after Iowa loses something and start giving their "opinion." Now it might be Royce Alger or some dude who doesn't even like Iowa...who knows. But first post guys who claim to be huge Iowa fans, and then add in their "yea buts" are always kind of suspect. Truth is, had Cory Clark pinned his guy and had Brooks won, we would have never heard from these folks. Just another win against a tough opponent.

Nothing about any of your posts resembles a 68 year old. More like 28 and attention seeking. Just walk away.

----------

I agree moose, this just doesn't pass the smell test. A little too strange...a 68 yr old geezer, follows Iowa wrestling for 30+ years, and only starts posting now. Probably a troll from themat forum coming over here to kick the team and its fans after a loss.

I've become a hawkeye fan and will attend the B1Gs. I've got nothing against flat uninspired wrestling.

I am a big fan of watching guys rack up multiple minutes of riding time without a possible turn in sight. Apparently tilts are only an east coast thing. Nothing is sweeter than watching Sorenson put on a pointless ride on an overmatched opponent like Monday. But hes not the only one who cant quite grasp the cutting a guy concept.

Only 2.5 of our starters can score back points from on top. Clark, Brooks and half the time Meyer.

Craps getting old.

To top it off Gibbons talks about how Cael spends 75% of practices letting the guys roll around at 3/4 speed to work on back points and reversals.

Mike Evans actually got worse turning guys as time went on. How does that happen?

Great times!

You said it all in your post. You don't claim to be the worlds biggest Hawk fan you are now just a fair weather fan and things change as you get older. I call BS. Although I do not post often I am always on here because I love the sport and I love the Hawkeyes. I don't care if I am 100 years old I am still going to be a diehard Hawkeye fan, that is something that just does not change if you are true to your team.

"Last night I posted that I had decided to not attend the Big Tens. Wow! It only took 2 minutes and I had my "True Fan" card revoked! For about 4 or 5 years now I have only been a fair weather fan."

- I would say your "True Fan Card" was rightfully pulled when you admit to being a fair weather fan for 4 or 5 years. Starting that thread, at that time? What did you expect?? Going forward if the Hawks are winning you will be around and if they are not you will not, per your own admission.

- You are correct on one thing, it was Paul Jenn that beat Cael Sanderson in his redshirt year. Paul grew up down the street from me and his oldest sister was my babysitter growing up. He was a great man and is missed!!

Go Hawks, Always!!
