The "Connor"/scholarship issue

Yes, it is somewhat unfair that BYU systematically has 6th year seniors on their roster.
I personally got to know several Mormon kids on their two-year missions. Unless there are special provisions for athletes, which I highly doubt, they truly spend their time as missionaries, pretty much all day, all week. I can't say they never lift weights, etc., but it would not be like taking two years off to pump up. They would have the advantage of being two years older, but that is about it.

Which is huge, regardless. They are 3-8 years closer to their physical peak. "Closer" being the keyword. They all will still have at least a few years to go, after they graduate from college, before they reach their best years of basketball...assuming they do not stop working out after school....

I think what you are missing is that when Mormons are on their missions, they probably are playing WAY less basketball during those years. So, while they are physically more mature, their skill development is on hold, if not regressing some. I would guess that the physical advantage would be greater in football than in basketball.

Am I the only one that thinks if Connor truly does dedicate himself to playing big time baseball, that he will have to neglect the development of his basketball skills?

Totally agree. If you want to really dedicate yourself to baseball, you aren't going to have time to be working on basketball. Unless your name is Bo jackson and you can just walk from the football field the baseball field and not miss a beat.

Of course if he dedicates himself to baseball, his basketball development will be lessened. There are only so many hours in a day, and so many hours to get to the 10,000 hour mark.

Very interesting. To think I got ripped a week or two ago when I suggested Connor might end up playing baseball player and/or have a better opportunity elsewhere (prep school).

Just listened to a Gazette podcast interview with Fran that came out today. One important thing he talked about was Connor's baseball/basketball decision. No firm decision yet by Connor as to what he's going to do. Apparently, he wants to play for coach Heller and his dad. Prep school is definitely an option. However, says Fran, "I think if he comes here [this year] he'll play baseball exclusively right away and take his time with basketball." Fran, of course, is quite willing to pay Connor's way, under that scenario, "for the first year."

So, 2 implications here.
1) As many have expected, it doesn't look like we're likely to get much contribution from Connor on the floor this year. CW likely stays as backup PG.

2) It sounds like Connor wants to play for his dad and with his brother. If he goes on scholly in 2018, that still projects to 14 schollys on the roster with the addition of Wieskamp in 2018-19. Who leaves? Cook going pro? Wagner going football? Dailey? Williams? Someone else?

No not every athlete can play two sports in college & go to class at the same time. BUT its has been done. Danan Hughes is just one example. I believe Connor McCaffery can do it as well.

None of us know how good he is going to be on the BB court or BB field as a true freshman.
Shoot some posters thought JBo was a backup recruit. Those people got quiet real quick and then dead silent.

This isn't a situation where one can say...well Connor u are a better baseball player so go play baseball. We don't know.

It will be interesting to see if he plays in the PTL.
One thing is for sure...currently he is a walkon so he isnt taking a scholarship roster spot...therefore he isnt obligated in my book to try to play basketball as a true freshman. He had already helped the program (along with his parents) by walking on.

Rob Howe just said on Twitter that Connor McCaffery said "I am definitely playing basketball" as a freshman and hopes to have his college athletics situation for freshman year figured out by next week. Thus, if he's enrolling at Iowa next year, he will play basketball in addition to baseball. Sounds like a decision will be made soon.

I am glad to hear he is going to try it. The football/baseball is easier as the games do not conflict. The basketball/baseball does a little. Still tough to do.

what does "no firm decision" mean? It means Connor has not decided anything yet. I have a feeling if he is the best choice to play Point backup ..he will be doing just that.

I also hope we can get a lot better defensively. I think guys like Christian Williams can help in that area while getting another summer under his belt.

Yep, I agree most likely scenario is he gets 10ish minutes back up point guard. Might get 10ish minutes at off guard too. I think Fran was being coy in that interview.

Nothing wrong with recruits playing other sports and pursuing other interests, and Fran supports that including honoring commitments to hs teams (comparable to Wirfs/Epenesa in track). Connor has and should given baseball full participation, and if it turns out he’s good enough to be drafted he’d have to consider it. Not likely though, but he can play out the season, which doesn’t end until the middle of July. And if Connor really wanted to choose baseball, he'd support him.

But as a coach with his team though, you’re either on the bus or off the bus. Make no mistake, getting on is a huge commitment, has to be by choice plain and simple. Bus leaves when practice starts for the Europe trip. In July.

He’s just making sure Connor’s choice is clear. One of the other things he said was “Connor shouldn’t take into consideration the needs of my team”…. He knows he needs a backup point guard, so does Connor, so does everybody else. Quote below just makes even more likely its gonna be him---he' joining the family business.

Gosh darn it the rampant speculation was just starting to get good!
