If only the game planning and the offensive scheme were at the same level, then you could add a few more Big Ten titles to the list and maybe a national title or two. How can Iowa have so many great individual players and still have mostly mediocre results as a team?

Isn't it possible the reason Iowa has so many individual award winners is because of the scheme and game planning? None of those guys came out of high school with elite measurable attributes, can't-miss hype, extreme athletic freakish ability...

Because there are many aspects to coaching, and it’s rare to be tops st all of them. Some are great recruiters, but poor at developing that talent (Zook). Some are good talent evaluators in their own right (Ferentz), and some rely almost solely on the recruiting services or follow another teams lead like Iowa. Some are good mativators, And some are good game day coaches.

I think the Iowa coaches are great talent wvaluatrs and developers of that talent, however, they don’t always put the best players on the field (seniority has tended to rule), and are not the best at game day coaching (scheming), especially when playing teams we should whoop, we tend to play conservative and let them hang around. So a bad bounce here, bad call by officials or a few turnovers and we are risking a loss we shouldn’t have.

Some of those years we put 10-12 players in the league, yet way under performed on the field (record), 2010 probably being the most aggresious season of that which comes to mind (though many others, 2007 being another).

They didn't want to promote violence...Bob was a bad man. Loved the way he played the game.
Was just about to say this... They couldn't endorse assault, and what Bob did to opposing players was criminal in all 50 states. Guy was an amazing safety.

for those that think we suck all the time....these can be added to the list
Kirk Ferentz -
AP College Football COY
(2002)
Walter Camp Coach of the Year (2002)
Big Ten Coach of the Year (2002, 2004, 2009, 2015)
Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award (2015)
Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, Football Writers Association of America (2015)

Many of these are in a trophy case at the new practice facility. Really impressive. Stop by if you get a chance to see it.

They probably have each recruit take a look at it. Doesn't matter what position you play, the Iowa coaches will develop you into one of the best at that position.

How did B.Sanders not win one of those.
Bob was injured a lot throughout his career in college and the NFL. In college those missed games hurt his stats. In the NFL the one season he stayed healthy for he was named Defensive POY for the league.

Not to mention...
2002 USC had Troy Polamalu at S
2002 OSU had Mike Doss at S
2002 KSU had Terrence Newman at CB
2003 Miami had Sean Taylor at S

That's a lot of really good college and, other than Doss, NFL talent that he had to compete with for awards.

For all you recruitniks, click on the link. The list of top players is full of people most haven’t heard of, or can’t remember them.
Which list? The one to the right side of the page is 2018 commits. If you click in Bulaga's box for the top players that year (70-National), 8 of the first 10 guys were NFL players, most of which were stars. Clausen, Mcknight, Berry, Mallett, Dunlap, Griffen, etc. The other two guys were UDFA, 1st Team All-Big 10 type players.

I have no idea what you are looking at, or if you just don't follow football very closely.

We get it. You hate the coaches and everything sucks. Your skills at taking something good and reminding people of something bad are impressive.

We may be a mediocre program, but no one could deny we have fans with elite level negativity.

Seniority doesn't 'rule'. The kids that earn it day in day out and display the most consistency play. Pretty simple. There is also a lot of intangibles that go into those decisions as well that we aren't privy to.
I don't know what talent 'wvaluatrs' are, but it sounds painful. :) I think they get the most out of their players though.
I don't know what everyone means by 'playing conservative'. They have a philosophy that they stick to. Are you saying that if they get up by 7 against Illinois they should throw deep every play henceforth? Some people say they play 'not to lose' at times as opposed to 'playing to win'. I think playing 'not to lose' is a misnomer. They are always playing to win, people just have different theories on how to accomplish that. Iowa believes (and I think rightfully so) that if you burn clock, control field position, and minimize risks, you increase the odds of winning. It works more than a lot of people realize, but people have no problem remembering the rare occasion that this theory isn't properly executed. The last drive against PSU, they decided their best chance to win, was to sit back in coverage and make them throw under, under, under (not give up a big play) and make them run a lot of plays to go 80 yds. in 80 seconds without them making a mistake. Sound philosophy. I don't call that conservative. We just didn't make enough plays and they didn't make any mistakes. We had them 4th and 2 at their 40 and didn't make a play, etc...
