The recruits are coming into town this weekend

Falbo - interesting, first I've heard of him as a recruit. Iowa must like him better than Lyon.

That Colorado kid is tough. He had a pretty one sided win over Coleman at Fargo.

Colorado is on the rise big time. They have a ton of cadet and younger guys that are tougher than nails and placing high at national tournaments. It would be great to get our foot in the door there.

I believe there are a couple different clubs in Colorado run by x training center guys. I thought I heard TC Dantzler. Anyone from out that way shine some light on this?

Definitely a very impressive list. Opening that Pennsylvania pipeline was monumental. I also love how Brands and Co. have seemed to have adapted. Development is still paramount to success, but starting off with can't miss guys like Lee appears to be the only way to stay competitive with PSU.

It would be nice to have the bleachers full for practice on Sat, to show the recruits the Iowa has the best and most fanatical fans.

Guessing that won't be an issue. Every practice I have ever been to on a football Saturday has been standing room only. Granted, I haven't been to one in the last couple years, but I would imagine it hasn't changed. I will be there this Saturday and am looking forward to it.

Omaha:

Dantzler runs a club called front range wrestling club which is either in springs or around springs. Most recently it has had success with G'angelo Hancock jr world bronze, but last year it had a junior nationals finalist in Greco with Martinez maybe at 113 or 120. Either way they have some good kids in that club.

CO has a few top 50 programs with pueblo county and Pomona as well so I think yes co is on the rise. There are generally more kids from Colorado than there were in the past.

Sons of thunder is a club that has a lot of youth success and has some super tough females as well. I think it's in Parker so a lot of those kids go to ponderosa which has a great tradition as well.

I think that with the otc influence there has been an influx of good guys coming in and coaching and developing kids. There are some pretty decent high school tournaments in Colorado and some of those teams get out of the state which helps as a whole as well.

Meant more kids in the rankings as well in terms of kids being ranked than in the past.

Confused yes Co is doing well. I'm guessing FL and NC states seem too putting in the future. Not too be confused with Current lb for lb states.

The crowds have been smaller this year. Some of which is probably due to so many later start football games.

Thanks for the info! It'll be interesting watching all these light weight studs develope.

This will probably be the last practice before a football game and their first since they started structured practices on October 10th.

I am expecting a huge crowd in the room.

You actually learn more about Iowa Wrestling at a practice that you do at a dual meet.

I am now up on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/IowaWrestlingFan/

It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling Fan.

Couple things. Like Knight asked what's up with Luke Troy? He's been a bit off the radar for awhile. He a pretty entertaining kid to watch, and I hope we can still land him.

Second, Anthony Falbo is a very interesting possible commit. He's currently ranked #9 on Flo. Like a lot of Iowa fans, I was fairly confident that the Hawks would land in-state up and comer, Max Lyon. He would have fit in perfect into the Hawks lineup as we likely struggle at 184 when Sammy graduates. The Lyon ship sailed however, when he committed to Purdue. Falbo is a stud and solidifies a need weight for the Hawks.

Thanks again Todd for what you do. Hoping for a great recruiting weekend. Lee, Berge, Warner, Costello (Who with a win over Sammy Evans at Night of Conflict is now ranked #12), Falbo, Murin,Wilson makes a pretty impressive list. Landing these recruits sets us up weight wise for awhile.

Go Hawks!!!

Max Lyon would not have been an upgrade over Cash Wilcke. Lyon has a better chance to start 4 years at Purdue and receive more ship $.

I'll start out by saying I know nothing about Luke Troy situation.

Is it possible that since he's in Cali and has already committed that it doesn't need/can't make it out this weekend?

Hope you're right pump. I just noticed that Murin is making the trip from PA and he's already committed. Haven't heard much about Luke in awhile.

Also cool video of Falbo vs Anthony Sherry of IA from Fargo 2015.

I like the article, seems like a great kid. However, it doesn't give me a good feeling. When his idol, person he respects the most, yada yada is Kyle Snyder, that probably not good. Not cause I don't like and respect Snyder myself, purely from a recruiting standpoint that doesn't bode well. If I'm a 197 lb recruit, do I go to Iowa or Ohio State and wrestle with Snyder? Same argument we make about the small guys. Hope I'm wrong.

tOSU is set at 97 (Moore) and Heavy (Singletary) for the next four years.
Plus, Warner can train with one of the few guys to has beat Snyder (Burak)
I really like our chances with Warner.

I would think that would be a bit of a slap in Kolin Moore's face if tOSU landed Warner. Both Moore and Warner were world team members with Warner having the better tournament at a lower weight. With the addition of Singletary and Romero, the Buckeyes are set at the upper weights for awhile. I love what Warner brings and I hope we can land him.

Yup, I was somewhat relieved to see Moore make a world team, Singletary and Romero sign. tOSU was our biggest competition imo until that happened. I really don't see the appeal of training for world and Olympic titles at any of the other schools he listed outside of tOSU

LaxHawk will ease your worrying by providing an Interview that Todd Conner had with Jacob Warner this offseason.

http://iowawrestlingblog.com/2016/05/jacob-warner-interview/

Excerpt from interview:

"What do you think about the Iowa Wrestling Recruiting Class of 2017 so far with Spencer Lee and a host of very highly ranked tough wrestlers that are in your grade?

Warner: You gotta kind of look at it and say that they are producing a team right now. Spencer Lee will be a national champ. Jay and the others, they are getting a real good team. To be honest, to me being someone that is being recruited by them you have to look at it and say “Why wouldn’t I want to wrestle for them?” They’re going to be good and you want to be apart of that atmosphere with people that are going to be trying to win. They are going to be a force. It will be an awesome atmosphere to be around."

Lax still likes our chances with Warner.

That is my favorite Todd Conner recruiting interview. The last line is the best line. "It WILL be an awesome atmosphere to be around." Not "It WOULD be an awesome atmosphere...... It sounds like he already committed. So WHEN we land him it WILL be awesome to watch him help the Hawks win National titles again!

GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!

Can someone articulate the upper-weight lineup if Warner commits? Can he be 184? And where does that leave Wilcke and Holloway?

2017-2018
184- Wilcke
197- Holloway
285- Stoll

2018-2019
184- Wilcke (or Falbo if he commits, then Wilcke backup IMO)
197- Warner (Possible Holloway backup)
285- Stoll (Possible Holloway backup depending on his weight, and possible Costello backup if he commits)

It does not appear that 184 will be in the books for Warner, he is more than likely a career 197.

Warner wrestled at 85kg (187lbs) this summer at Cadet Worlds. He looked big for the weight and there were certainly some conditioning concerns. He won bronze so not THAT much of a concern, but he looked visibly gassed in a couple matches. He is ranked #1 at 195 this year and seems to have a good height and build for 197. I'm sure if he needed to he could cut down to 184, but that would be two years for now and who knows how his body will grow by then. 197 seems the logical choice at this point. If he and Falbo commit you could see an upper weight lineup that looks like this:

2017-2018
174 Kaleb Young
184 Wilcke (Falbo redshirts)
197 Holloway (Warner redshirts)
Hwt Stoll

2018-2019
174 Kaleb Young
184 Wilcke and Falbo battle it out
197 Holloway and Warner battle it out
Hwt Stoll

To be fair
Warner was a cadet and Moore a junior.

I should have clarified more in my post, but that is part of my reasoning as to the slap in the face. From where Warner's sitting he has to beat a Junior World Team member just to make the squad, unless he cuts down to 184 (which probably isn't the best weight for him). From where Moore is sitting, it could make him feel as if the staff doesn't have confidence in him as why would you recruit the #1 195 lber in the country unless you wanted him to compete for a spot at 197? From tOSU's perspective why would you want two World team members at the same weight. Even if Warner cuts to 184, then Romero is wasted recruit. Romero is stud in his own right. I just don't see any reason Warner isn't all in on Iowa and obviously likewise Iowa on Warner.

I think Romero will be a 165 as a true FR, then 174 afterwards to replace BoJo. They will still have Martin at 184, who still has a redshirt available (which he may or may not use prior to his SR season, after NaTo, BoJo, and Snyder graduate next season). But your point still stands.

Either Warner is 184, and sits behind Martin for one year before starting (or forces Martin to the bench for his SR year). Or Warner goes 197 and either sits behind Moore for 2 years, or forces Moore to sit the bench for his JR and SR seasons.

I have seen Falbo wrestle in person a few times. I guess he could be a 184 in college, but his frame seems to be more well suited for 174. He has a very quick initial burst, but not terribly athletic. Competition he wrestles during the year is very weak. I would think at Iowa he is not getting much in the way of money. Not that I know, but I wouldn't doubt he is a very good student from where he comes from - maybe he qualifies for some academic aid. That is purely speculation on my part.

I wouldn't write off Wilcke just because Falbo is making a visit. I don't think he is the type of recruit that is going to come in right off the bat and make an impact at those weights. He's got some tools, but more likely a project at the top schools.

Well you would know better than I would, him being an east coaster, I was just going off of HS resumes of the two. Wilcke was a 2x Iowa State champ with not really any big national results that I can recall. I don't think he placed at Fargo or anything. Which is different styles, but still. Falbo is a 2x Fargo AA, and I'm not sure of his state tournament results. Wilcke does have some decent collegiate results so far.. 13-3 RS year, and an 8th place finish at University FS nationals. One thing I'm a bit concerned of is his ability to make 184 in 2 years time. Morningstar said in an interview recently that Wilcke is big and that 184 will be a tough cut for him but manageable. I'm not sure if more time will exacerbate the difficulty of the cut or make it easier, but usually it tends to be the former. I'd say they are about equal in terms of recruiting 'tiers' in regards to when they come out of high school. I can't recall what wilcke was ranked at his weight but I think it was something like 8-15 range. Similar to Falbo. But its all just speculation until they're in the room anyways.
