The season long haters

There’s really only one way for Fran to prove anybody wrong and that’s with March success. Otherwise it’s 12 years of great offense, a few NBA players, and not much else until we do it all again next year.

IMPORTANTLY - I’m not saying this team will flame out early, not do I want it to happen. I’m just saying if the Hawks are done early yet again, it’ll be disappointing with Keegan gone and next year looking like another “middle of the pack” type team.
Sort of like this year where Hawks were picked by almost everyone to finish anywhere from 8th on down.

I agree that the team has overachieved expectations. Anybody claiming they expected this kind of finish in conference is either always predicting it or a liar.

that said, we can’t hang a banner for being better than everybody expected.

In terms of preseason expectations, the number of people who predicted 4th place or at worst now a 6 seed in the b10 tourney, and safely in the NCAA tourney after losing two NBA guys and two others to transfer is lying. I thought best case scenario was to be flirting with the bubble and likely need to win one or two in the conference tourney to cement a bid.

Depends on the take. Sometimes a comment deserves such a response.

Yes, but the theme for years has been Fran doesnt care about defense. He clearly does, and I think adding Toussaint, Ulus and perkins especially reflects that. I don’t think anyone can truly argue frn doesn’t want to win, and he’s a smart guy, he knows elite offense combined with mediocre defense will only take you so far.
Agreed

True they could lose the first game in the tourney, but I think not. Also winning the Big 10 is the goal but Iowa was really considered a ninth-place team at the beginning of the year due to loosing Garza, Weezy, CJ and the kid that went to Xavior. So, a fourth place is in reality pretty good in a lot of people's minds
Pretty good in my mind yes, but I picked the Hawkeyes 4th in the league this season before it began. Having said that I picked Illinois, Purdue and Michigan above them soo was wrong too

Fourth place is great, due to the reasons you listed. Much better than expected by most fans.

Still……I would really like to see a Sweet 16. Something Fran has never accomplished here. To do so well in the regular season and then flame out again in the NCAA tournament would make the season a disappointment, IMO.
Exactly. "I told you so's" are a bit premature. Everyone is happy they are playing well. Let's hope the hawks make some noise in the tournaments.

JMO, but the stuff said about Fran/JBo/CMac in some of the threads borders on hateful, is hyperbolic over-reaction, and is proving to be wrong.
For the most part it’s a small percentage and it’s the same douche canoes that are constantly triggered about a certain coach on the other boards.
The ignore option is a terrific feature

Congrats, you successfully copy and pasted from Microsoft Word 🤪

I thought an upper half finish was possible if a lot of things went right. I admit to not seeing Keegan emerging as a first team all-big ten player, maybe player of the year. Thought he’d be good, not great.

Were you happy with Lickliter?

Just a few degrees of separation between the differences between those two coaches.

I thought we’d be better defensively but would take a step back on offense after losing all that production.

I never thought they would be where they are now. I thought they had lost way too much. However, I never said fire Fran and that this team is garbage. We have so many fickle fans in football and basketball it is sickening. We even had people say the wrestling team backed into a national title because a couple of finalists lost. Let that sick in!!

This is the kind of BS we have to put up with here. It gets really effing old. If you don’t like the coach or a player you are not a fan and you should find another board to terrorize.
So because I don't like a coach that makes me knot a fan? JFC Hooper get over yourself and calm the F down. I didn't mean to get your panties in a bunch.

Liking or disliking the head coach has zero to do with your fandom. Almost no one on here would admit they liked Alford as a head coach, but the plain fact is he lead this program to its 2 biggest heights in the last 20 years. Once a Hawkeye, always a Hawkeye, so get it done Fran!

Lol—. Sorry they proved you terribly wrong again. JBo haters must be on suicide watch😀
I’m pretty sure people hated how he was playing, and he was playing terrible. His shot was off, he wasn’t playing defense, and he was taking minutes away from guys who appeared to be better options.
Every one of those “haters” are very happy he is playing like he is capable of playing.

So if they lose early in each tourney we’re they right? Nothing has been proven yet. Getting 4th place in the BIG isn’t the goal.
Maybe- but you win some and you lose some. Some days other teams are shooting better, or just get more calls, breaks.

Or maybe you could admit that at times Iowa looked like the biggest steaming pile of horse feces, and that criticism of their play was warranted at the time?
Hyperbole? Iowa had bad stretches in games but for the most part they have been in almost every game except 2, and one of those was a 9-point loss. Do you think that they should never stumble?

LOL.

No I didn’t expect perfection but you have to admit FM was slow as hell making rotation adjustments and putting the players in the best situation to win.
Losing I can deal with . Stubbornness in obvious situations is what ticks me off the most.

Since you are uninformed I will let you know that Fran has a winning record and there is zero reason he should not be fully supported by the fans. Bringing up Lickliter is a strawman but since you don't understand I will let you know Lickliter did not win, ran a boring offense and could not relate very well to players and fans. The two are really not comparable and I bet you understand that.

Oh, okay. Good thing the coaching staff listened to you!

LOL!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the ones that drove me crazy were the one trick ponies that, no matter what the topic, felt the need to interject their view that CMAC should never see the floor or Bohannon needed to sit down and only get minutes if he was hot (?) or that McCaffery was inept, clueless, incompetent and was trying to sabotage his own program. Being relentless is not always a positive character trait.

Isn't it funny that so many people obviously think they know more than our coaches, even though they have never attended a practice or strategy meeting. Heck, I'll bet most of them never even attend a game, yet they are the expert.

I’m surprised & very happy with where we’re at right now record wise, but slow down amigo.

We haven’t really beaten anybody yet this season. A way overrated Ohio State team is our best win.

You’re right. Winning at Virginia and Michigan was no big deal. They probably shouldn’t even count those wins, is that what you are saying? My goodness.

Yeah because no one else on here was screaming the very same thing. Not sure what you were watching at the time but it was pretty obvious changes needed to be made .

So you still haven’t figured out I’ve been typing like this for a decade ?
my beef as I said was the rotation Fran was using earlier in the year. Not enough minutes for Kris. Too many for Connor when he wasn’t playing well. No JO against other teams bigs. And let’s face it until recently getting their butts kicked on the glass , and non existent defense.

Let's take a look at these.
1. So you still haven’t figured out I’ve been typing like this for a decade ?
No. There is no reason for it other that you're just ignorant.
2. Not enough minutes for Kris.
He got and continues to get what his play merits. FWIW, he is averaging 18 mpg over the year but only 17.8 mpg over the last 9 games (whereIowa went 8-1). So NOTHING HAS CHANGED.🙂
3. Too many [minutes] for Connor when he wasn’t playing well. Brilliant thought. Shame you couldn't apply this line of reasoning across the board. He got and still gets the minutes he deserves as a 5th year senior.
4. No JO against other teams bigs.
What? LOL! Do you mean he shouldn't play or that he should be playing? Since he hasn't been logging minutes I assume you mean the latter. If so, why?

Unhappy with the outcome of any loss, but usually happy with the effort.

I never questioned effort either. I just think the coaching was suspect at times , and effort certainly was lacking in rebounding and defense, which I’m happy to say looks like they’ve markedly improved.

“If you don’t like the coach or a player you are not a fan”

Your words. Since you made no “qualifications” (such as….If you don’t like Fran, or If you don’t like a coach with a winning record) there is no straw man here. I understood what you said perfectly. I can only go by what you wrote.

Naturally you are walking your statement back. About what I expected you would do.

Since Alford had a winning record I can only assume you liked him, too. Or is that another “strawman?”

Next time, be more specific. It isn’t the reader’s responsibility to read your mind.

There is a difference between being critical of a coach and making it personal. Lord knows Fran has been deserving of criticism at times but it really does feel like for some it doesn’t matter what he does, anything that goes wrong is his fault.

Even when Iowa wins, some just nitpick. Even in this stretch where Iowa has win by double-digits, FFS. It gets old.
