There is a chance that CJ

has been concentrating on VandeBerg and maybe Kittle too much. If he can start going through three progressions, Smith, somebody and somebody may show more talent than we know about. We damn sure are not going to establish a running game with eight and nine defenders in the box every time. That somebody may turn out to be a star!

I have considered this. I'm not counting on it, but it is possible.

Also, reps for the new guy will bode well for next year (trying to stay positive).

I was at Rutgers game, CJ attempted to go thru reads, but RU had a lot of blitz packages and 8 in the box schemes going, our line had issues picking it up, just like with Mich State, Stanford, and NDSU. We had a hard time keeping Rutgers off tempo.

Agree. Also there

Tough to go through reads when you have .5 seconds to get rid of the ball. Besides, Vandy hadn't been targeted a crazy amount lately.

Jay Scheel's time has arrived IMO. He can't shoulder MVB's production alone but he is the thoroughbred from the stable of receivers on the roster. He is reportedly 100%. The biggest recruit in 2014, third year in the program. Just one reception.

At this point, with an open spot on in the starting line-up, if Scheel cedes playing time to other reserves or younger players such as Jonathan Parker, Ronald Nash, or Devonte Young, it will be a major disappointment IMO and a big opportunity missed ((not knocking Parker, Nash, or Young -all can help play a crucial role this year)).

Scheel has played a lot of snaps without much to show for it. I agree it's time for him to make some plays.

I thought this was gonna be a 'chance that CJ moves to linebacker' thread

No. But if that Penn State kicker wanted to transfer and play linebacker for us, that'd be okay.

What people are forgetting is that CJ has taken at least 3 shots to the head this year. 2 of them alone in the Rutgers game, and the 2nd one where he stayed on the ground for a few seconds ... that one affected the rest of his game. Go back and look at how many completions he had after that.

Naturally, the opponents have not been flagged for any of those helmet-to-helmet hits.

I think it will help, but CJ is also looking to make the NFL type throw it seems like. Instead of taking a risk and throwing it up for his playmakers, he seems content on dumping it off or tucking it and running. That's not what won him the job. His ability to throw the deep ball w/touch is why he won the job.

His throw on that 4th down he was trying to rifle it in there, instead of just putting air underneath it. Sometimes you have to put the ball up in the air and let your playmakers go make a play. If they can't do that, then were screwed.

What play makers does he have to throw to? Your post doesn't make any sense unless you feel that the coaches have made CJ more conservative.

Why hasn't the coaching staff come up with a plan to offset the blitz. Roll him out, quick hitters across the middle, slants, or Swing pass to a back. There are lots of plays that can get the ball out quicker. Doing what they are doing is going to get him killed, don't be vanilla come up with a couple of new plays for each game. The opposing team is going to watch film and see they can't pick up the blitz, well what do you think they are going to do. I know what I would do. BLITZ BLITZ BLITZ.

He has taken zero shots down the field outside of the ISU game. If you notice everything is 10y-15yds and that's it. I mean even with Powell in the system, they just ran him deep and CJ launched downfield for him. Why not put Smith or Scheel in that position. Have we taken any downfield shots in the last 2 games? It seemed like we were able to against ISU, but everyone else we settle for the 7-10yd routes.

I believe the coaches have told him to take the "smart play" as opposed to trying the risky throw (ala stanzi 2009 17ints 2010 5int). But he has to at some point just take a shot to loosen the DB/Safeties. NDSU and Rutgers Safeties were less than 10yds off the ball. IF that's the case, CJ has to audible and just run a guy deep to get them to loosen up. Both games the opponents had 7-8 guys in the box. That's tough to run the ball against.

On the 4th down throw I thought he put way to much heat on it. Just lob it up and allow Smith to make a play. I think CJ is pressing and trying to make the "perfect" throw every time. IN that situation you have 4th down and if it falls incomplete its the other teams ball. I would of lobbed it up and allowed the WR/DB to fight for it.

After 4 weeks, the Hawkeyes are ranked 12th in the
Big Ten for Total Offense with 356 yard average It has
to change or Iowa will lose a lot more games. Part of
the problem is that our defense spends so much time
on the field and we are losing the time of possession
battle.

I think this may be the most interesting game of the year. Can/will CJ and the staff figure out what to do in the passing game. I am convinced we have enough talent but I am not convinced we have the scheme. I am not saying our talent is incredible but I see pretty average teams having places to throw the ball. I believe part of this is we lean to the run, which is ok, and the passing game is still an exotic. CJ has talent But our offense is a run first proposition. Not saying that is bad, just saying we are easier to scheme against. We have all sat there and watched certain alignments and we know what is coming. And I am a dude on the couch. We don't test the defense deep. Our deep throw last week for the touchdown to the TE was built on deception. Great play but it was deception not a deep throw.
We have what we have and it won't change. I love KF but he really won't change.
I would love to see a REAL balanced attack where our backs get the ball and there are gaping holes because the defense thought we would pass. Not going to happen.
This is why we are on the edge of a great record and a so so record. This is why we will struggle to get national respect. This is why we can go 12-0 and lose to NDS and struggle with Rutgers.
It is what it is.....that's football

This is a potential cross roads moment that the staff will likely fail. Not because they're bad coaches but merely unimaginative. The big boss's mentality is do a few things really really well and out execute your adversary. KF is cautious. Hence we are unlikely to see any changes in the play calling with the next guy in.

But, just maybe, some of the more aggressive instincts (and I think OCs are typically more creative and aggressive than HCs for a variety of reasons-a personal aside, God I wish I'd spent my life coaching offense in football, what a dream job) of the offensive staff might be working on some new ideas for the young receivers. Scheel is supposed to be a good broken & open field runner with speed and quickness. JS actually made a nice run with his only catch. Let's explore that ability in something more aggressive than a flanker screen that still allows the defense to place 9 guys on the line and the safeties within ten yards. Some games, most games actually, we grind down our opponents win relatively close games, usually closer than they should be but not as close as the scores indicate.

Every now and then we either run into a team that has too much talent for our predictable but well executed offense and we cannot get overwhelmed; or we run into some really crafty guys that totally outsmart us because they see opportunities less crafty coaches miss. And a very few coaches, like Don Shula and Bill Walsh will beat you with their players and they could beat you with your players. There aren't many of those coaches and fortunately Hawks don't have to play their teams often. Do we have a young and brilliant coach on our staff? This would be the time for that guy to shine.

There's a reason he was throwing to Kittle and Vandeberg.

What's your theory on why he was concentrating on those two "maybe...too much"?

Well, we'll see now if he can go through progressions with MVB out. Line has to give him time

This is as much on CJB as it is the line, one of the biggest knocks (according to pro scouts) is CJB does not get ball out in time, has hard time "feeling" pressure from backside, and does not move well enough in pocket to "buy" time. Obviously he can throw well on the move and does good job getting out of the pocket, but the best of the best (Brady, Manning, Rodgers, etc) can step up or over slightly to buy time in the pocket to get the ball out, or even gets ball out quickly to avoid sack
