First, congratulations to Kirk Ferentz. We are lucky to have him and our all-time winningest coach could not be a better person. Just a perfect KF win as well. Nothing flashy just wear them down and play great defense.

Wasn’t the prettiest of 1st halves offensively but overall really pleased with the game. I said this on Saturday in various threads but offensively we were without our two starting tackles and still ended up rushing for 200 yards and put up 31 points. Then defensively you are without 2 of your top 3 DT’s, 3 new LB’s and you gave up 2.8 yards a rush. The 2nd team D gave up 6 but the first team got 2. Our backups got ½ quarter of playing time so overall you have to be pleased with the result.

Game thread is in mid season form. I get you want perfection because that’s what your life is but people really need to think before they post. Perhaps after every game win or lose we should start a thread and post the gems.

Kallenberger, Ferguson and Paulsen owned the all world Sutton Smith all day. Yet another hype guy comes in that’s going to ruin the season and he fails to show up. So much for him punching the Hawks in the mouth. This aint Lincoln Sutton. LOL. Truth be told I don’t think he’d be in our two deeps.

Too many drops in the first half but there was some passes that could have been thrown better as well. Just a sloppy first half offensively. Penalties didn’t help either.

Nate didn’t play a crisp game but his first half stat line was 9-18-90 and 1 INT. However, if everyone catches the ball he is 15-18-169 and 1 Int. Amazing how that changed. Plus 4 of those drops would have been for first downs.

IKM lost 74 yards on 4 carries to holding calls and a block below the waste. Fant’s hold was weak at best and to be honest I thought the one on Fergurson was weak as well. I didn’t even know Ross Reynolds penalty was a penalty. Another rule change I guess.

What was with the play by play guy and the ages of the players. Seemed obsessed with it.

Iowa stayed in the base D all day except for raider/radar. Never went to nickel. I’m guessing they will next week.

I don’t think N Ill was a great test with their WR’s but the secondary played really well. Both Corners held their own. I expect a much greater test next week for the entire D.

I think we got what we expected out of the LB’s. They were out of position at some points but they didn’t miss many tackles and they made some really good plays. They didn’t get abused in coverage and they were extremely active. I think Amani lost his job for sure but I think he’s going to be needed down the stretch.

Young didn’t touch the ball in the first half, guess you could say he was fired up to get in the game.

All kinds of new faces out on the field. One of my favorite parts to college football. I think my favorite new face though was Ally Sturm. Tough to say after giving up a blocked punt but the punt team on both sides was so much better. KG did a great job of getting positive yards and what about young Colten Rastetter averaging 53.8 yards a punt , long of 69 and you absolute cannot punt the ball better than that one that set up the safety. I love these stories especially kids that get a lot of grief from fans. He is what Iowa is about. Too many think these kids show up NFL ready.
They get developed by the coaches and they work their butt off. He’s getting my game ball.

Most of the game we blocked Sutton 1 on 1. Ferguson, Levi and Kallenberger all handled him pretty easily.

We’ve got 3 good backs! Somebody in the game thread in the first half was all over IKM saying he’s a 3rd down back at best. Get a grip folks.

Your kickoff team was Jones, Hockaday, Welch, Beyer, Hockensen, Ross, Kelly, Hankins, Moss, ISM and Groenwig.

Long yardage defense AJ and Nelson at DE, Hesse and Gholston at DT. Left all 3 LB’s in.

Late in the game I get you want your kids to finish but all those timeouts were kind of lame. I don’t think Brian Ferentz was crazy about it as well.

1st QTR
14:05 Looks to me like Amani Hooker was supposed to block the guy and he touches him and then goes to help inside leaving a clear lane for the blocked punt. Also Brady Ross helped inside in the back end and didn’t see him coming either.

13:40 Hooker was on the opposite side of the field but he saw the reverse pass to the QB right away. You could see him screaming to everyone.

12:54 Hockensen owns Sutton 1 on 1 and Paulsen wanted to help and while doing so let the LB slide right in.

12:22 Banwart pancakes the DT pretty quickly

Next play, Render and Reynolds have the same guy leaving Ross 1 on 1 with the LB and the LB wins the battle.

11:30 Brincks gets put on his backside and Amani Jones would have been there but for whatever reason he moved to the left to be right behind the pile and RB ran right by him.

10:40 IT’s a long yardage situation so Hesse in at DT but fights off the guard and makes the tackle. Great effort play.

7:43 Sargent and Smith are your two wides, Fant and Easley in slot and Hockensen just off the LOS.

6:02 Love Chuck Long but not sure what he’s talking about on this play. Nate throws a quick out to Easley and Brandin Smith was blocking from the start. Everyone else was playing like run right. Chuck said Nate should have been patient and threw the slant behind it. We weren’t running a slant behind it.

5:14 Dalton doesn’t block the DE and he has a clear shot at Sargent. 4

4:55 Nate’s pick, Fant is triple covered and nobody is on Sargent out of the backfield. I think Nate predetermined where he was going with the ball.

4:15 They get a nice run here but it was due to A Nelson doing a stunt and he was there but the tackle hit him high and it looks like the guard hit him low which I believe is a penalty and knocked him of fhis feet. This is one where Amani left that area to go with the man in motion but so did Amani Hooker. Somebody should have stayed put I’m guessing. Plus Nick Nieman took a bad angle here. It’s going to happen, first game for all of them.

3:45 Great play by Kristian Welch. Does not move an inch on the block, fights it off and great tackle

3:20 This might be what the coaches were seeing. Amani Jones is going out in the flat where Nick is already at and leaving his guy wide open for an easy pitch and catch. This is the play where Amani Jones was replaced. Jack Hockaday was in after that.

:40 Nieman with a great play on 4th down. All 4 DL got penetration on that as well. Chuck said the QB should have kept it but if he had he would have ran right into Matt Nelson and Sam Brincks.

:20 Our first OL replacement comes in. Kallenberger comes in at LT and Dalton moves to RT. And his first play at a Hawkeye for those keeping score is a run right behind him for a 9 yd run. Great block by the youngster. Brady Ross with a good block here as well.

2nd quarter
15:00 Nate completely fools All World Sutton Smith and the play fake and throws a nice pass but great catch and concentration by Hockensen. In the replay you can see the ball is tipped by the LB.

Next play Love the confidence in your Kallenberger. 1 on 1 with Smith. Did a good job but if Nate waited a few more seconds he would have gotten there. On this play Nate was under fire so he threw it out to Fant but he had TJ in the back of the endzone.

Next play, IKM with a 11 yard run but negated due to a hold on Fant. That call was weak sauce. Also on this play TJ owns Sutton Smith and a LB comes running in full blast runs into Kallenberger and ends up on his backside. Mark is going to be a good one.

13:40 Noah Fant at FB to start with but moves out of it quickly and was supposed to block somebody on the end around to ISM but didn’t.

12:23 @rivercityjazzman boy right through, no leaning on my end. I really like it when I don’t have to lean to help those kicks go through.

11:52 They are showing a nice graphic of all the games N Illinois has fought since 2012 against Power 5 teams. They left one off of that graphic. Nebraska got beat at home to them last year. I wonder if that was an accident or a Nebraska fan was involved in the graphic.

11:08 Nelson great move to get the sack.

9:53 Maybe our first blitz of the game and Hesse, AJ and A. Nelson all in on the sack

9:11 Nice block here by Dalton. It was about here where you could see N Illinois DL getting tired. Iowa hadn’t had a lot of luck but their body language was not good.

Next play- This is another great catch by Hockensen because he had to know that Safety was coming in hot. Also, Sargent all alone for the dump off if needed. Everyone here went vertical other than Sargent. Fant ISM and Smith all were running go’s.

Next play. Either a horrible pass or horrible route but Nate not even close to Smith> Fans wanted a flag but I don’t know what for. Wasn’t even close to PI.

8:06 Mark Kallenberger. Sayin. Also Groenwig showing some drive in the blocking game who came into the game I thought to replace Smith due to that route. But Smith came back shortly thereafter.

6:49 Weiting into the game.

6:42 Chuck called it but great blocking by right side as well Render and Banwat on the left side. Weak holding call on Dalton

6:06 Fumble by Nate. Sutton Smith got close and I think credit for the sack but Kallenberger took him completely out of his lane just Nate ran right into him and it looks like Mark caused the fumble.

3:59 4th and 1. TJ got beat and Brady Ross ran past the LB and didn’t get enough of him.

Next play – AJ with a monster hit on the QB. He’s going to feel that for a while.

1:30 Great read by Amani Hooker. See’s everyone is covered and looks quickly behind him and then drops back. Great instincts.

:14 AJ again with the pressure. Great throw by N Ill QB but he’s got to be sore today.

3rd quarter
15:00 Young Rivercityjazzman kicks it out of bounds and showing some fire on the sidelines. Love the passion. Doubt it happens again.

Next play – Jack doing what Amani did in first half. Seeing something that isn’t there, runs himself out of the play. They will all learn from this. Best thing is the first team LB’s gave up 0 points. That’s what matters.

14:28 Nieman with the stop short of the 1st down but the play for me was made by Hockaday. QB looked like he was going to run for the 1st down and Hockaday closed it down so he threw it. Still great play by Nieman.

Next play – Seems insignificant but love Groenwig returning that punt. Ball was more than likely down inside the 10, instead we are at the 17. That’s huge in my book.

11:30 Great run by IKM called back to the block below the waist down field. I thought that block was pretty good even with the new rule. Blocked him right at his hip but I guess it was just below it. Still ticky tacky for my taste. Hockensen and ISM with really good blocks on this.

10:25 Great run by Toren Young. Went into Beast Mode on this run. Also, Chuck said that was all Toren Young but the entire left side of the line put him 1 on 1 with the LB. The DL was completely taken out. Nice to see the wheels on Brady Ross getting down field here.

7:23 TD to Fant. Not as easy as a throw but Beyer was open in the middle as well. I really think when the brought Hockensen out for this play that N Illinois was thinking run. Weiting and Beyer were the other two TE’s and nobody watched Noah.

7:13 Wow another call on special teams that I haven’t seen before. Blocking the Center against Michigan in 2016 and now they get Miguel for moving the tea. That rebel. LOL

Next play – What a pop by Gervase.

6:41 Hesse with the sack. What is with that little look away he was doing when players congratulated him. Looked like a planned response.

Next play – Welch with the sack even though he didn’t wrap up. Anthony Nelson being held on this play

5:00 Landan Paulsen is in for Banwart. Nate gets some pressure mainly because Dalton didn’t block anyone. He was replaced the next play by Kallenberger. He left Weiting 1 on 1 with Sutton Smith. He held him off long enough for Nate to pick up a few yards. If we had protection Noah was on a crossing route and couldn’t see on TV but looked the safety left that area and he would be open.

4:15 Weiting with a great block, takes out two guys clearing the long run by Toren.

2:51 IKM with 2 broke tackles for the TD.

1:45 When Welch had to go out due to his helmet coming off, Colbert was the replacement.

Next play, welch is back in and makes the tackle and you can see his right leg cramp up on him. Colbert came in once again.

Next play. AJ Epenesa and it’s not even fair. Parker Hesse and Nelson in there as well and Gholston all over the ball.

:43 Love the tough running by IKM.

4th quarter
15:00 giving Ross some love and great push here by Reynolds and Kallenberger. Ross was hurt on the play.

Next play IKM was hurt.

13:04 Dalton Ferguson destroys Mr. Were going to punch you in the mouth and puts him on his ass and I think if the ground was softer he would have buried him right there. Render with a great block on the LB as well.

12:30 AJ just getting after it. They couldn’t handle him.

12:15 Iowa gets the ball back and TJ says something to Brian Ferentz on the sideline and Brian just smiles and says no. TJ laughed. Would have liked to known what that was about.

11:10 Hockensen once again owns Smith. Rarely did Iowa double team him.

8:50 Max Cooper is in the game and he has sneaky speed. Jesus can you be anymore stereotypical?

Next play – YOU CANNOT PUNT A BALL BETTER THAN THAT.

8:00 Hooker is a stud. Blitzed twice in a row and the result was -1 yard and 2 points. He saved a TD earlier so he earned his stripes today.

7:59 loved this play. Mansell came in and they come out throwing. Not running it up, no trick plays but giving the kid a chance. Peyton looked the part. Also Nico Ragaini and Daffney in the game at WR.

6:52 the new faces are Linderbaum Jansen at DT, Gholston moved to one DE and AJ stayed in at the other. LB’s were Wade, Jones and Colbert. Corners were Brents and Turner and safety was Kaveon Merriweather and Geno stone. On this first play, he got benched but comes in and fights off a tackle and makes the play. Keep your head up Amani. Of course he got out of position a few plays later but it’s a work in progress.

4:40 Amani with the stick.

2:27 That facemask wasn’t on Amani Jones. It was on Gholston.

Next play- Hawks give up the shutout on a CB blitz by Josh Turner. Left the WR on his own due to the QB buying time.

2:12 new faces. Henry Geil, Coy Kirkpatrick, Drew Cook, Newborg at G and Banwart moved to C. Bryce Schulte at TE.

1:57 Not sure we aint 5 deep at TE. Bryce Schulte with a dominating block on the DE 1 on 1 . Took him all the way to the other side of the field and pushed him down. Awesome.

1:15 Levi Duwa entered into the game at RG and blows up the LB after helping with the DT. Kyler Schott also enters.

STATS
Our 3rd string TB averages over 10 yards a carry.

Hawks D gave up 55 yards of offense in the 2nd half.

N Illinois in the first half 16 rushes 63 yards. 2nd half 20 rushes 38 yards.

RULES!!!

Lot of good stats. Will be nice to compare game 1 to game 2 and see good improvement

The Good:
Toren Young/IKM look to be as good as advertised
Good pressure by the defensive line
Most of the plays made by the defensive line was by way of great coverage
Our punting is improved
Our special teams over all looked better
Nick Nieman is as good as advertised
Line played well without our starting bookends
The Bad:
WRs are not making strides
Amani Jones had a rough start
Stanely needs to work on consistency
Slow start (against big ten teams halftime score would've been 14-3 at best)

Bright side: if they keep that up we wont have to worry about Fant or NS leaving early. You can be the most unguardable TE in the world but if you cant consistently catch the ball the NFL dont care. NS hurt the draft stock also.

Nonsense. No one in the NFL will be looking back at game 1 of this season as the determiner of a players draftability.

I saw Nate Stanley make a throw that he would have landed 5 yards past the receiver last season. If he can hit the deep ball consistently this season he will be a top 10 pick next spring. If his receivers can actually catch the balls that hit them in the hands in stride he will be in the top 3 for Heisman voting.

No way you are serious. He was rocketing balls at peoples feet on screen passes yesterday. It can all be fixed but Stanley is far from Heisman talk this year.

Maybe you weren't at the game and it can be tough to see on TV but from where I was sitting I saw a quarterback getting rid of the ball to avoid the sack and throwing a pass in the only place that the ball wouldn't be picked off. At least two of those passes would have been a pick 6 for sure if he had placed the pass where the receiver could catch it. On one in particular, you could actually see him change the angle of the pass mid throw.

Now, he certainly had some bad throws yesterday (that first interception...ugh), but it's the first game. I'm just basing this on where he was last season and what he needed to improve on.

Gonna have to agree with wasn't drunk. There were a decent amount of drops by WRs yesterday but most of them because they were thrown at a high velocity and off the mark. He did not look polished. I wouldn't say it was a terrible game for Stanely, but it was serviceable at best.

I was at the game and watched him throw darts at Cooper's feet and easley's feet. I understand why he was wide on several throws, he is too risk adverse IMO. I get that he had a quick clock yesterday but he was off for sure. His big thing that he has harped on, and needs to improve if he ever does go.pro, is his completion percentage. You dont get a high completion percentage when you are skipping balls in just to be safe.

Ok, well, I saw something different. You all are aware I said he could win the heisman if he does some things, not that "He is going to win the heisman because of one dropped pass against Northern Illinois", right?

Just not ready to blame the WRs for dropped passes. Fant was the only one with a true drop yesterday. There were a lot of throws that were off the mark. The INT was underthrown and into double coverage. The game he had yesterday will not win too many big ten games.

You can blame the guy throwing and the guys trying to catch em.
If we're gonna go anywhere on offense this year, guys need to catch some passes that aren't 100% perfect. Every other team has guys that can make them.......

he said IF they continue to play like that.
IF they continue to play like that I'd agree....they won't be going anywhere.
He didn't say their shot at the next draft is already now

This seems to happen to all of our QB the longer they are in the system.

something I think interesting...

Wisconsin beat a team that was 6-7 (last year) 34-3
that team was Western Kentucky

Iowa beat a team that was 8-5 (last year) 33-7
that team was Northern Illinois

I feel pretty good about this team so far.
