We obviously were much better than this team and it appears the word was right that this wasn’t a normal UNI team. Having said that, Iowa covered (if you count offshore) 3 straight games, backups starting sprinkling in in the 3rd quarter and nobody got injured that I know of. That’s a good day. Plus Nebraska lost. Angel just got its wings.

Like the 2nd play of the game we are going Tempo and the play-by-play guy says this was one of the concerns Northern Iowa had going in is could they keep up with Iowa’s size and tempo offense. I was like seriously, Iowa running Tempo was a concern for them. Then with 2:14 left in the 1st quarter the same guys says “honestly how many times has Iowa gone tempo offense in the last 20 years, it’s not been very often.” Yet somehow he thought UNI would be concerned about this. I may be nitpicking on announcers these days but I thought him and Chuck were not good.

I thought the tempo helped Stanley get in a rythym. He was 23 of 28 with 3 drops. That’s pretty good.

Outside of the penalties, a couple bad throws by our QB’s and our defense losing focus once the game was in hand, we played really well.

Our 4th possession our DE’s were Gholston and AJ. So we are as deep as I can remember on the DL.

I didn’t see our defense miss a tackle until almost the end of the 3rd quarter and on that play Reiff missed the tackle but then kept going and got the sack.

We blitzed probably more in this game than any game I can remember although most were once the game was in hand.

Nate only missed on 3 passes greater than 10 yards all night and all 3 misses were drops.

Congrats to Dalton and his woman on the two cuties.

It seems we have a 6 man rotation on the OL and it’s RG that’s going to rotate between Dalton Fergurson and Levi Paulsen.

Next week is a whole other animal to see where we are at for real. However, this has a 2010 feel for Wisconsin. Came in with crazy hype and dropped a game before conference play (Arizona & BYU) and having all kinds of LB injuries. Lets hope that trend continues and we beat them and maybe we can run a fake punt for good measure.

1st QTR
15:00 Lets give some props to TJ for the leap.
14:30 Wirfs and Fergurson with great blocks here.
14:05 Fergurson I think slips here giving up the sack.
11:05 You know how they always flag defensive players here for hitting someone after the ball is incomplete. This is a 3rd down incompletion and watch the RT lay out Hankins after the ball sailed into the sidelines. Seems safety is only a concern on the offensive side of the ball.
Next play – They punt and a lot going on here. Jack Koerner (#28) is in the game and plants a guy near Groenwig and then keeps driving him into the ground. D. Young with a viscous crack back block and Wade knocks a guy down as well. Also, at the top of the screen you can see Brents has his helmet being pushed up so they missed a hands to the face there.
10:46, Easley puts a guy on his ass but that same guy leg whips Sargent for the tackle.
10:11 Brandon Smith a good block to get Easley the first down.
8:31 Long says Nate is going through his progressions but I think this is a planned pass. Not 100% sure but he looks at Brandon Smith who is open at the 1st down marker with a MLB about 2 yards away and then immediately looks left and throws to Easley. That looked like it was designed from the get go.
6:10 We have seen this TD pass to Fant several times now, at some point I think they fake this and go the other way to TJ, Beyer or Weiting. That’s my guess anyway. But why do that until they stop it?
5:06 We blitz here and Jack Hockaday knocks the RT on his ass.
4:15 I need to learn this rule or the refs need to learn it but another penalty for a block. This wasn’t 5 yards past the LOS. It was 4. JFC. Kirk not happy about it.
Next play – watch the BTN tracker, it has the distance to go all wrong for the next 3 plays. It was 1st and 17 and they had 27. They just kept it wrong until we picked up a 1st down on what they had as 3rd and 20 which at the time was 3rd and 8.
2:06 Brady Ross pancakes the LB. A much better game from him today.

2nd QTR
15:00 I like this play. We ran it a few times last year but I believe this is the first time this year. Fake dive to the FB and quick pitch to RB outside.

Next Play – Wirfs and Paulsen great blocks, Sargent running hard.

14:09 – After we kick off, watch the playclock. It goes red at 5 seconds and then it goes off screen and after it should have reached 0 I count 8 seconds before the ball is snapped. How is that not a delay of game?
12:30 AJ with the sack but this was forced inside by Gholston who had a great 1st step. He’s really improved this year. Also on this play, watch the RT take both hands and grab Lattimore and throw him to the ground. The replay you can see it even better. Not sure how they missed that one.
10:41 The snap goes over the QB head. Okay I don’t think it’s the new rule but this seemed kind of dirty to me. The RB goes right after Chauncey’s knees but he jumps over him. Maybe nitpicking.
7:45 Nate fires quickly here but he had time and a clean pocket.
5:35 Screen pass here and TJ puts a LB on his ass
4:30 Young only gets 3 yards the LB makes the stop but that LB had to feel that. OUCH.
2:09 We kickoff and we get an offsides penalty on Jones. This is some cheesy call here. It’s tough to see on replay because they show Sargent on the sideline and when they get to the kickoff Miguel is just hitting the ball. Yet I freeze it here and maybe Amani’s helmet is past the 35 but nothing else. D. Young’s helmet is also right at the same spot as Jones. I thought this was a horse shit call. After this play you can see Brian having to calm Amani down on the sidelines.
1:58 A. Nelson Blows up the RT.
:50 2nd sack we give up, Reynolds just gets beat.
:12 After the horrible INT by Nate his first throw on the next possession is a bullet. Love how he didn’t get rattled there but maybe that’s due to competition.
Next play – Someone explain the rule to me because it looks like the guy who blocks the FG jumps over Alaric Jackson and Levi. I thought that was illegal.

3rd QTR
Right before the kickoff, Levar Woods is talking to the kick off team and they show the crowd. Girl almost loses her halter top. Had to do some girl maintenance there. Creepy for me to notice that right?
14:15 Riley Moss with not much but a clear block in the back. Then he looks around for a ref and thinks he got away with it but the flag was laying at his feet.
13:53 New wrinkle here, the fake handoff and quick throw.
11:40 Nate wanted Brandon Smith deep here but it was doubled so a quick check down to Toren who if he had a better pass probably picks up some more yards.
Next play – Absolutely no reason for Wirfs to jump here. We were barely getting into the play set.
8:13 Last week Nate didn’t do this and I wonder if this is coaching but very decisive here to pull it down and run the for the 1st down. On the replay he is 5 yards down field and fakes a pitch to get a few more yards.
7:03 Amani Jones comes into the game. Big screen pass here for them and Welch looks like he gets blocked but fights it off, then gets tripped by the same guy, falls down and gets back up and still gets there to get a hand on the guy. Great effort. This is where I thought things were going to get chippy, the RB clearly lowers his helmet and tries to run it straight into Gervase and Jake wasn’t having any of it. Pushes him and then the RB shoves the ball in his chest. They talked a good game for a team getting blown out.
6:34 I think who Brady Reiff reminds me of is Karl Klug. He sort of had a knack for jumping on guys backs like a lion bringing down a zebra or something./
Next play – Hockaday back in the game so Amani only got 2 snaps in this possession. Not sure if he did something wrong or Jack needed a breather.
3:17 Young and Sargent in the backfield at the same time. Also Iowa replaces their right side of the line with Kallenberger and Landen Paulsen. Nice block by Fant to spring Sargent but he just keeps breaking tackles. What a find by the staff he was.
Next play – Love we come back with a jet sweep to Easley. I wonder if this was already in the game plan or they watched the Wisconsin game earlier.
1:59 Colbert comes in for Welch. What an incredible1st step by Brady Reiff.

4th QTR
12:40 3rd and goal and this is what I hate about college football. That is so much a bullshit PI call on Gervase. You can’t breathe on a receiver without getting a flag anymore. Then what is with the TE here. Points to the flag and starts acting like he is throwing a flag. I was like scoreboard buddy. This has a lot to do with why they aren’t a good team this year I think.
Next play – Left Tackle gets both hands on AJ’s facemask and pulls him down. AJ got in his face afterwards about it. They were some dirty bitches.
11:12 Your first possession of 4th quarter features Mansell, Geil, Tracy, Cooper, Ragani, Beyer, RT Levi, RG Newborg, C Fergurson, LG Landan Paulsen, LT Kallenberger.
10:07 Landan Paulsen clearly getting hands to his face here.
7:39 Stone and Milani are now your safeties. Not sure why but Parker leaves Hankins and Ojemudia in. Is it because he saw something he didn’t like earlier or that he didn’t think Turner and Brents deserved to be in yet or didn’t want to give up another TD. Not sure why but it didn’t work out.
4:35 3rd sack given up and Kallenberger gets beat badly.
3:45 Chuck and his colleague don’t know what Brian Ferentz is mad about. I think maybe the fact that the previous play the DE jumps offsides and they don’t call it. Regardless he was hot and an assistant had to pull him back a little bit.
2:53 Brents and Riley Moss are in at CB. Surprised not to see Turner here and I hate to stereotype but I was thinking Moss was being looked at Safety. No doubt who UNI went after. 4 straight passes to Moss, he gave up 1 catch for 8 yards. Your LB’s here are Amani at MLB, Colbert and Wade. Jansen (who seems to have been passed by) and Reiff were at DT, Simon and Jack Kallenberger were at DE. Not sure why Waggoner isn’t getting in a game at this time but that’s the coaches decision.
2:10 Your newest entry is Coy Kirkpatrick at RG. This seems to the be the position that is the biggest concern on offense right now.

Thanks, great observations and in depth stats!

Implications:

We are less predictable on BOTH offense and defense, this cannot be understated as teams must prepare differently
Up Tempo=Stanley Confidence
Our Punting Game (both sides) is a difference maker vs YAG (realize our stats last night for returns were weak, huge one called back)
Aggressiveness on 4th down will be a weapon (e.g. going for it consistently on 4th and 1).

If Amani Jones is in a funk, I wouldn't blame him. 1st game starter now with limited time. He would probably benefit greatly from more snaps but Hockaday is playing very well IMO. Now the refs are picking on him on ST plays..... off sides on a KO? c'mon.

Sargent is "slithery". Slithery + good balance = extra YPC.

Ragaini played in "garbage time". Its way too early, but he looks like a player. Same with Riley Moss. Same with Tyrone Tracy (nice catch in traffic over the middle)

I like the jet seep with Groenweg.

That INT throw by Stanley was u-g-l-y. Hope to never see Nate panic like that again.

Nate had 1 other throw where he got real antsy but it was just a missed throw to Fant and he had plenty of time and room to make a better throw.

Was stunned Moss was our 2nd string CB and not Josh Turner as was against N Illinois.

There have been a lot of penalties by Iowa in the first 3 games. That needs to get cleaned up if they are going to have a good year. They also need to clean up special teams. two blocked kicks, missed field goals and some penalties.

Also, came away from this game worried about Ojemudia and Iowa's corner depth. They didn't look very good against Northern Iowa.

I know against N Illinois there were 3 penalties that called back IKM runs totally 74 yards. 2 of those penalties weren't penalties at all.

Against N Iowa there were 2 penalties that weren't penalties at all either. The illegal blocks was 4 yards maybe down field not more than 5 and I'm still not sure what they saw Gervase do on that BS pass interference call.

Against N Ill are back up corners were Brents and Turner and against UNI it was Brents and Riley Moss. Not sure what happened to Turner but I would think if there is a concern on D it would be corner depth.

Nate made a really bad choice on his int, otherwise was a far superior outing to either of the first 2 games. I was particularly happy to see him run with it for positive yards when he had a wide open middle of the field on one play. Need to have more of that.

Disappointed in the second unit/back ups efforts. I didn't expect them to necessarily maintain the shut out on D. But I was hoping for better execution and attention to responsibilities on both sides of the ball.

Hope to see Amani Jones get on track. He didn't appear to understand how to be in the right spot and make the choices needed of a mlb in game 1 and unfortunately for him that seems to have snowballed. Would be good for him to have a couple of big plays where he is in the right spot at the right time to regain confidence.

You didn’t mention that on UNI’s second score, their receiver bobbled the ball when he hit the ground out of bounds. It should not have counted. I guess by that time the replay official was trying to get ahead of traffic.

Hate to get technical about op's 3rd quarter analysis but it was a tube top not halter.

I took a screen shot of that young co-ed and sent it to a buddy at the game. Thought it might have been his daughter. Fortunately for him it wasn't. Unfortunately for me he now thinks I am pervin' for his daughter.

I had to look up the rule on leaping on kicks. Technically if you are stationary on the LOS prior to the snap, you can leap the line. This is a rule that needs addressed. Don't like it.
The Ferentzes need to get with the B1G and the NCAA about low blocking. There is obviously some directive out there to call things that haven't been called in the past. This is three straight games the Hawks have been called for one. Iowa's offense isn't built to gain 25 yards in two or three plays.
The PI call on Gervase was one of the worst calls I remember seeing. Ever.
The point about offensive players getting away with excessive contact is valid. There is definitely a double standard there

My thinking on the PI on Gervase is that the contact happened before the camera was on them. We never got a great view of the play. Going strictly by what we saw on TV, it was a terrible call. That doesn't mean there wasn't contact.

This is what we were thinking also,... Gervase's defense on the ball looked perfect so something must have occurred earlier in the play....

If that's the case it should've been called defensive holding and the flag come out much earlier than it did. Just a horrible call I think.

It wasn't even entirely the back-ups ... if I recall correctly, on the first score we had 2 or 3 back-up D-linemen in and Djimon Colbert. Other than that, everybody was a starter. Even then, given how much we've rotated our D-linemen since '17 ... it was effectively our top D.

The point being ... our D needs to clean-up things ... lest we get victimized by teams with competent passing attacks.
