This is late. I was fishing for 3 days and haven't found much time to rewatch the game. A lot of people probably don't like reading these after losses, but oh well. Haven't been online much so if some of this has been discussed sorry in advance.
My sister texted me often saying the atmosphere was nothing like she's ever seen. Hats off to the crowd. They sounded amazing on TV. That game was a fist fight. Reminded me a lot of the B1G championship game in more ways than one.
I have a couple fishing buddies that were watching the first quarter thing and when young Caden was talking about Nick Easley they got a few lumps in their throats.
A lot to like from that game. Tough team gut wrenching loss but individually I thought there were some great performances. Akrum Wadley at one time had 10 carries for 0 yards. You give him enough chances and great things are going to happen and he picked up a lot of blitzes tonight to keep Nate clean. Nate once again misses some throws but when it's money time he is on his game. Great 1st start for Amani Hooker. Anthony Nelson was a monster all night and was held at 3 times on the final drive with no call. AJ continues to get more snaps and played incredible. Stanley again has Wadley doing a lot of the work but he continues to move the ball late in games when it really matters. Cedric Lattimore played his best game I think with penetration quite often. Really liked to hear Sam Brincks get some recognition by the A team of college football announcing. He's taking a beating in the game threads. Finally, the Outlaw played like an all-American.
No points in losing but hard not to be proud of the effort and heart the Hawkeyes showed. If they don't have Barkley they don't win that game. The best player I've seen this year.
Parker had a great game plan. That is a really good offensive team and we played about as well as we could play, they just had #26 and he brought his A game.
We may be 2 deep at every position on the DL now as Reiff and AJ played far more than just passing downs. Not sure if that was due to the heat and the amount of plays or it’s just time.
Only sack given up tonight was on IKM not holding his block long enough.
Didn't see all those empty seats people were complaining about
6 batted down balls last night after I believe 0 in the first 3 games
We blitzed a lot. I counted 17 for sure blitzes and at least 5 more where we submarined LB's at the snap on short yardage situations.
Our average 3rd down was 3rd and 9. Penn State was 3rd and 3. Our shortest 3rd down was 3rd and 4 on two different occasions.
Iowa only got to the redzone 1 time all game. Blocked FG
Penn State didn't stack the box as much as people thought. They just attacked LB's and the D line was too quick for us. Most of the game they played 7 man fronts.
2 tendencies that we didn't break, all audibles (if they are audibles) are runs and we always run after an incompletion on 1st down. Audibles I get with a young QB, last year CJ audibled 2 passes quite a bit. Results listed below under stats.
Statistically speaking we had no business being in that game. Just kept finding ways to make plays.
Penn State had the TOP advantage by over a quarter of football.
Penn State 99 plays, 29 1st downs
Iowa 45 plays, 11 1st downs
To be in that game is a tribute to the coaches and players. Penn State didn't play badly either.
It was the tale of 2 halves. 1st half offense couldn't get anything going. 2nd half defense missed a lot of tackles.
Until the possession where Jewell had the pick, average field position for Iowa was its own 15. Penn State was the their own 41.
Our punts are not ideal but you can't argue with the return coverage. Nice to see he got a couple really nice ones off. The one return they had we hurt their returner.
Once again, Miguel kicks the ball so high that are kick coverage is outstanding.
I'll be a bit surprised if Iowa isn't a little flat next weekend. Such and emotional and physically draining game. That one hurt but time for Sparty.
