So this might be a big part of their problem. They were likely trying to establish citizenship, for how long I have no idea, but the wait can be extraordinary. It's also not a sure thing that they were on an expired visa. It could have been a green card.

Or maybe some of us see these people who in the vast majority of instances have been solid contributors to society, worked hard and paid taxes, and feel for them when their lives are turned upside down and along with their kids who know only this country are forced away. It's different when you put a face instead of a number to these stories.

The truth is...why is our country this dysfunctional on immigration, as they are on so many things?
- Why was someone allowed to stay here 11 years, or however many years, past their work visa expiring?
- Can you still be working on an expired work visa? Doesn't seem like you should be able to have a job.
- Why were they unclear about whether they would be eligible to return?
- Why can't they know their exact status, and when they need to have their affairs in order and leave, rather than get blindsided by this?
Like, this is the dumbest possible way for the system to work, and the most painful. To the kids, but there are presumably businesses that are now short an employee on zero notice, there is a landlord now stuck with an open property and belongings to dissolve.
Two things can be true...someone doesn't have the right to enter illegally, or stay indefinitely outside the terms of their legal entry, AND this is a shit-tastic way of dealing with it.
But one party has shown absolutely zero interest in removing people that are not legally here, and the other party has incredibly little interest in a proper process that isn't cruel for the point of being cruel.

Always is. And even if there isn't, the story said enough. They let their Visa expire. That's a no no.
3 years ago and girl who was in my sister's class had her world turned upside down. Her husband and her were back in Canada where he's from visiting his family. When returning to the US they found out his Visa was expired. His wife (pregnant at the time) had to return to the US without him. He has not allowed been back since while his wife and kid live here.
Keep that same energy with the Biden admin. Or maybe, just maybe, there are rules in place that have consequences when broken. No matter the admin.
