Ronnie Lester........Mike Gesell (this is a stretch) drive and dish
Kenny Arnold.........Anthony Clemmons relable 2 guard, great D and scores when needed
Vince Brookins.......Peter Jok sweet jump shot
Steve Krafcisin........Adam Woodbery great post D, rebounds and scores down low from time to time
Kevin Boyle.............Nicholas Baer all over the place, becomes whatever we need, heady player
Bobby Hansen.........Brady Ellingson (a big stretch) hits those long threes
Steve Waite..............combo of Uhl and Wagner rebounds, gets put backs, long armed god D

instead of Lester being our go to scoring option we have Uthoff who also plays the Steve Waite/Krafcisin/Hansen role as a combo ......whatever is needed

Lute Olson.................Fran McCaffery passionate coach who knows what buttons to push

Not saying we are the same but I really do see some similarities. Main thing is the teamwork, and the fact that we don't rattle.

Lester > Gesell
Arnold > Clemmons
Brookins = Jok
Krafcisin <<<<<<<<<<< Uthoff
Waite = Uhl/Wagner
Boyle > Baer
Hansen > Ellingson

I can see the teamwork thing for sure but I'm not ready to equate these 2 teams yet.

Yeah, he won accolades in that era, but watch that Final 4 game vs Louisville (or if they were on Youtube, any game from his Junior or Senior years) and tell me what you see that reminds you of Baer other than size and complexion. By his last 2 years, Boyle was coasting on reputation - to be fair, largely due to injuries. But he did not have any basketball skills that would translate to today's game.

Kevin Boyle was damn good. Helluva a defender and a great outside shooter. His scoring went way down his senior year because by that time, Lute had become enamored of the 4 corners and decided that a slam dunk was the only acceptable shot. Boyle had about half as many FG attempts his senior year as in previous years. His FG% stayed up around 48.

I was living in Chicago when Lute left for Arizona and I will never forget this line by a sports writer in the Chicago Tribune: "Lute Olson is the man who took Kevin Boyle, the greatest pure shooter ever to play in the Chicago Catholic League, and coached him to mediocrity in 4 years."

I believe Kevin Boyle is the HS coach in NJ who is funneling players to the blueblood NCAA BB teams. Have any of his players come to Iowa and if not why?

You're not getting any smarter, and now you're just making crap up.

Disagree with ALL of these comparisons- apples and oranges, every one. About the only comparison that works between this team and that one is that they are both good and play at Iowa.

Kevin Boyle is the color commentator for UNI and I believe he lives in the Cedar Valley area.

I bet if you asked players (and fans) from opposing teams of that area, Kevin Boyle would have been the most hated Hawk on that team. The guy was a pest. He was all over the place, throwing elbows, etc. During those years I was an Indiana fan, and I hated Boyle. He was Iowa's Bill Laimbeer. Boyle was a very good player for what he brought to the table and that's play excellent defense, provide relentless energy, and just annoy the hell out of his opponent. He's the guy that every opponent hates but would LOVE to have him on their team.

Ha! I forgot about the elbows.

Thanks, I don't live in Iowa and wasn't sure about it. I liked Kevin Boyle when he played for the Hawks. He was a pesky defense player and decent scorer.

Didn't Boyle's scoring and shooting percentage get worse his Jr year and then even worse his senior year? He is big UNI fan these days, so who cares.
