Thoughts on Brandon Smith? Mark Emmert of the Register chimes in

On passes 15 yards, or less, it appears Stanley needs to use "more elbow, and less shoulder," but I really don't know sh!t.

Yep! He needs to play 6’3 200 plus and not 5’7 164.. can Akron Wadley give him some of his heart???

Side note: he seemed to block well, it almost looked like he would have rather just did that all game! Looked more comfortable blocking than catching the ball.. Brandon is not ur prototypical WR as far as confidence goes..

Brandon whiffed on his block on the ISM jet sweep

I’m tagging each of you guys dumping on BSmith.

Fact is he’s going to make big plays this year. Just wait until he GETS COMFORTABLE in his new starting role.

I think just because he walks in at 6’3 219 people assume he should play like the All-Pro version of Calvin Johnson.

Give him 4-5 games before you start making any assumptions about what his is, or isn’t.

Tag all you want. I comment about what I see on the field.

Don't build them up before they earn it. And don't give them credit for unearned potential either.

Don't think anyone said he will never improve. Needs to improve? Yes

I hope he and all of the WR's do just that.

First B Smith drop was an NFL receiver catch if it’d happened. Stanley threw a laser to where only he could get it, and he didn’t hold on.

The real drop of that drive was the potential TD Stanley put in Fant’s lap on 3rd down. Can’t recall him ever dropping a pass, so that was off to see. First drive jitters.

But back to B Smith, I find it encouraging that Brian assigned his first play to him. Shows they have faith in him and anyone writing him off need remember the depth chart isn’t full of saviors at WR. Dude just needs one big play to sow his oats and he’all be a gamer.

Sadly, B. Smith is reminding me a lot of Adrian Falconer. Looks the part and has the physical gifts, but is lost on the field. Hope he proves us wrong.

Noah Fant had some key drops last year. Rest assured NFL scouts are watching that. What makes him a freak TE is that he can flat out outrun corners. Kind of a crazy talent.

Stanley looked like he was worried about Sutton. Looked to rush most of the plays. Hopefully getting back the first team tackles will calm him down a little bit. I think we did not throw deep many times for this same obvious reason.

This. Getting your 2 future NFL OTs back would make any QB more comfortable in the pocket. That said, this wasn't a good showing by Stanley, but we know what he's capable of.

You can either catch the ball or you can’t. He’s dropped almost every pass between last year and this year. He’s not going to be a reliable WR.

In the last 14 games- every corner has been better than our receivers. :( 21 total catches last year and three yesterday.
Start clarifying you’re talking about just the Smiths otherwise stop posting false information.

Why Smith is being singled out is confusing, not 1 of the wr's had a good game.

Easley showed he is capable last year. And yes Smith is probably under a microscope a bit more than any other receiver but what concerned me was not so much the no catches as how a player with his physical attributes does not seem to use his advantage to go after the ball. He should be a guy that wins the battle on 50/50 balls but so far I see him losing that battle 100% of the time.

Stanley and the WR’s just need to relax a little

Again BSmith Homer:

The other thing I noticed yesterday was "we" had several good down and distances from 30-40 out to take a jump ball shot at the endzone and not once did we take that chance. Part of having a guy who is lacking confidence might be forcing him the ball, when you have the oppurtunity, to build confidence.
I wonder if Stanley/Brian are lacking the confidence to force him the ball or give him some 50/50 shots because he just doesn't compete for the ball. It's too risky. I'm not giving up on him yet, but I was hoping to see some improvement from Brandon after a year under his belt and the positive reports of his offseason development.

And yet the smiths are terrific in practice. Seems like in games they have to go against all American corners EVERY week

He's being singled out because of his size, his weight, and the lack of doing anything in the receiving game as a starting Wide Receiver.

Maybe he was outstanding blocking, which is admirable, but if we're going to get past being a pedestrian Offense against the Big Boys, having some play making Wide Receivers would go a long way toward making that a reality.

We've had some great Tight Ends, let's pair them with a stud wideout and see what happens.

God there a lot of miserable people on here.

I am not miserable about it at all. I was thrilled with what I saw from Niemann and Welch. I was even impressed with the way Jones came back from a poor first half and played hard in the fourth quarter. I was impressed by Gholston. I was impressed by Banwart. I thought all three RBs were impressive. Hockenson was money; Fant, not so much. I did not, unfortunately, see one thing from a WR that demonstrated that progress has been made in the Hawks' ability to stretch the field and make another team not crash nine guys at the LOS at the snap of the ball. That is the missing piece of the puzzle to Iowa being a factor in which B1G team is in the playoff at the end of the year. BF basically has acknowledged as much. So again, I am not miserable. I predicted 9-3 and I am staying with that. This team has enough talent that an effective passing game would push them to the next level.

I don't think that they are using him correctly. He should be running 5 yard slants & fades to the corners of the end zone, use him on routes where he is forced to use his size, not these quick outs & flag routes.

In one of the plays where he could use his size, the ball got intercepted. I know some of these things are hard and people make great plays sometimes, but turnovers are bad and he could have prevented one.

He also has to prove he can catch a ball that isn't right in his chest. I don't hate the kid, but if you're going to be on the field, make a play every now and again.

Our offense in the first half was atrocious. Brandon Smith was a part of that, but to single him out is
ridiculous! Stanley was erratic with his throws. His best ball he threw all day was dropped and should have been a td. Stanley didn’t look comfortable in the pocket and his receivers didn’t help him with all of their drops. Thank God for TJ! He made some tough catches in traffic. He’s our most underrated player on offense. I think getting our starting tackles back will help Stanley feel more confirtabke. If Smith continues to struggle then he needs to ride the pine. We need somebody to step up and show some leadership in the wr group. I’m hoping for major improvement next week from this group.

His throws were mostly accurate, but he made a few bad reads on which route to hit.
I was disappointed in Stanley yesterday, but it is just one game so you can't make too much of it. I think there are still legitimate questions about his accuracy, and I didn't see any improvement in his ability to make plays with his feet.

Don’t go blaming BSmith because Stanley’s reads and accuracy were off.

Throwing at the knees of a 6’ 3” WR is low percentage. Sailing a ball down the sidelines and underthrowing a sideline route, not checking off a post route when the corner had inside position.

If there was someone who needed to be better it was Stanley. He knows that. He’d tell you the same.

Yes, Stanley sucked. Did anyone see how easy Utah state made passing look? Ball out of his hands in under three seconds and they catch it!
