I liked it. Thought it was a little creepier watching knowing what was coming than not knowing. The kid talking about why he needed the knife and the teacher telling him he needs to stay offline, the boyfriend not showing up, the traffic snarl with police in a confrontation on the road ahead, the principal letting the kids out early (putting them out where the walkers are), etc., made it cool to me. Though it was not filled with action they developed characters and set the stage for what appears to be a very good season.

It was slow, but developed the characters. The father being a school teacher reminds me of breaking bad. he's probably going to go to the dark side as desperation is needed.

the junky will be dead weight, although he did off his drug dealer. he's going to make some bad decisions, that will be hard for his mom to back him. so far, I think all the black actors have turned to zombies.

I thought it was good. Even with the 90 minute premier, I didn't think there would be much action as they were setting up the characters. Ready for TWD to start but this will do for now.

So I am only midway through Season 2 of the original Walking Dead (I was late to the party).

Will watching this spinoff spoil anything for me?

I don't think so, not yet anyway. They are very different. TWD starts after the whole apocalypse went down and follows that group as they try to figure out what happened and how to survive. Fear is showing normal people living their lives as something creepy is going on in the cracks of the city. People are getting sick, weird police videos of people being beaten/shot and keep coming after cops, etc. People are like what is going on. In Fear the first character to witness things is a drug addicts, so they think he was high or mentally unstable. Thing is... we know what's coming. It's interesting to see it happen while they just have no clue what is about to go down.

OK, so it's like a prequel then.

Also, does it all take place in one location or all across the country?

The thing I like about it is the characters are going to have to learn things the viewers already know. They have to learn to go for head shots. They have to learn to avoid scratches and bites. They have to learn they all have the virus.

The increase in sirens was noticeable as the episode went on. It will be interesting to watch the developing chaos this first season.

This is starting out showing the affect on an urban area instead of people who have already escaped Atlanta. This will basically fill in what happened while Rick was in his coma. He woke up and the entire world had changed.

I liked it. I am very interested to see how these characters and the civilization adjusts to this. On The Walking Dead, it started before the zombie apocalypse to later when Rick woke up from his coma. The other characters had already lived the apocalypse for a while. So this will be fascinating.

As for the characters, they have potential. I really have always liked the actors Kim Dickens and Cliff Curtis and I am interested to see how their "every day normal" characters will adjust to the harsh new world.

The teenagers were annoying. I do think Nick, is an interesting character. Alicia, the daughter, is very pretty (relax she is really 22) and a good actress, but I feel like I have seen her character a million times before.

I do not know enough yet about Travis's ex wife and son yet as they were barely on. I like the nerdy kid with bad skin, who knew of the apocalypse could be a very interesting character. I think Ruben Blades character could become this show's Dale and/or Hershal. I like that actor. He will be on next week

Viewers have to give it a chance........this show has to build up. If people are thinking its going to happen the same way as TWD.......they are sadly mistaken.

Fear takes place in Los Angeles. It's basically a prequel as it is showing how the zombie thing unfolds. Again, the interesting aspect to me was already knowing... but the characters not having a clue. It's like seeing someone about to get in an accident, but not being able to do anything about it. Or see someone falling from across a room... you are too far away to break their fall, so all you can do is squint and watch the carnage happen.

Refuse to watch it. The Walking Dead is great. This is a money grab off of that.
I don't know, sometimes spinoffs are great.

I am thoroughly enjoying Better Call Saul, for example.

And back in the day, some spinoffs were as good or better than the originals. Some of my favorites:

Star Trek TNG
The Jeffersons
The Colbert Report
Frasier

So I watched it and it was ok, good enough to tune in again but some of that is bc I like TWD so much. I still can't quite figure out how they plan on keeping Fear going or if it will be a 1-2 season deal.

My concerns/questions:

1. How long was Rick in a coma? When he woke up and got going things had pretty much fallen all apart by that point in time.

2. Assuming Rick wasn't in a coma for more than say a month or two won't FEAR have to transition fairly quickly from a "before shit when down" to "after society collapsed" in pretty short order? At that point you basically have another The Walking Dead and that won't work IMO.

My favorite scene in the whole show is at the end. The confrontation with the mom/dad/son and zombie. They had the WTF is going on here moment. Then they realized the world is about to become really screwed up.

Didn't the mom get bit or did black zombie not pierce the skin since she had sleeves on?

That all depends on the success of the show I suppose, if people aren't tuning in they can just leave it as a one season special event. If it does well they order more seasons and let it ride.

They didn't make that very clear.

Yet she seems to be one that will have some staying power. OR maybe a bite/scratch doesn't turn someone as quickly as it does in the current time-period of TWD. It seemed early on in TWD that it took some time to turn but once Shane got killed by Rick and turned in minutes things changed and you didn't have much/any time at all.

According to the writers......
1. Rick had been in a coma for about 8-10 weeks. When they started doing the show, they were also doing "webisodes". In the webisodes, they focused on a nurse who was in the hospital trapping walkers and isolating them, while she took care of and kept patients alive. One of those patients is believed to be Rick. Even though they never showed her caring for him. From the time he wakes up, meets Morgan...... to the time he is reunited with Laurie/Carl........is a 3-4 day period.

2. the new Fear will keep going into the aftermath of the collapse. Only in an Urban setting. The cities have whole different dangers than the countryside. Far more walkers to deal with. And much more fighting and close quarters fighting between survivors. The show will have it's own set of legs to run on.

is there a big enough market to support 2 post apocalyptic zombie shows...I have my doubts.

Enjoyed the daughter in The 100. Was looking forward to seeing her here too.

I guess we are about to find out. Fear set ratings records last night for a debut episode.

I think Fear can stand on it's own, but fans are going to not be bitches and let the spinoff be it's own show without comparisons. The stories are very different. TWD is 2 and half years ahead of the timeline for FTWD. If fans relax, don't get too demanding, and let FTWD get it's legs underneath it.....i think both shows can be successful.

Having said that.....TWD has the ability to last 5-8 more seasons easily. I see FTWD as a 4-5 season show.

Didn't watch yet as saving up to watch the first two episodes together. So I haven't read any comments. Just taking the opportunity here to say that:

1) Huge walking dead fan. Great series.
2) I am a zombie. I've not made that public until now as I was afraid what the reactions might be.

So now that I'm out. A few things.

1) Crows, buzzards, beetles, other insects. It's not an easy Not life. The series misses that part.
2) You know, zombies are like the middle class of monsters. We'll take anyone. We're not elitist snobs like vampires.
3) It's hard enough having to catch our food, but when we can't even get our pants off the problems just continue later.
4) Please pay attention to how many of us are Sort of murdered in "The Walking Dead" when no where near a living person! Not Lives Matter!

And finally, while the walking dead is entertaining, please view this documentary clip which explores treatment of the Not live in the Middle Ages, notice terms like "zombie" aren't used. You will see zombies out foraging (one caught in basket, see how many others you can spot.), notice how they blend in peacefully among the living.

Thank you, enjoy both shows as I will...of course you know who's side I'm on. :D

I like both and think both are very different. The first season of TWD was cool when Ricky was in the city. I look forward to that aspect again where people are just overwhelmed by zombies any place they try to go. Much scarier than a random pack of walkers magically roaming through the forest.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fear becomes really popular if they don't have some cross over episodes down the road.

With TWD they are in DC area now and seems like they are pretty much hardcore with little humanity left. They are killing machines now... so where will they take that story. Is there still some govt left in DC? Is there other safe places where society can try to regroup and turn things around?

You pretty much nailed it with, "They are killing machines now". As a zombie I am horrified at the direction TWD has taken. Random thoughts. (Pretty much all we zombies have.)

1) Our heads don't get soft like that.
2) We're not "magically" roaming the forest. If living people would stay in one spot we wouldn't roam at all. How come the killer Rick doesn't get accused of roaming? He roams all the time.

Finally, yes, does anyone know of safe places where the living might be hiding? I mean, regrouping and turning things around.
