THE LINE: Iowa State is a 4 point favorite.
THE NUMBERS
OFFENSE: – IOWA STATE – 82.0 PPG, 46.1% FG, 30.0% 3 PT FG, IOWA – 79.6 PPG, 44.8% FG, 35.1% 3 PT FG.
DEFENSE: – IOWA STATE – 70.4 PPG, 42.8% FG, 35.1% 3 PT FG. IOWA – 70.7 PPG, 43.4% FG, 32.6% 3 PT FG.
THE LINEUPS
IOWA STATE
6-3 guard Rasir Bolton – 15.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game
6-5 guard Tyrese Haliburton – 16.2 points and 8.2 assists per game
6-2 guard Prentiss Nixon – 10.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game
6-8 forward Solomon Young – 9.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game
6-9 forward Michael Jacobson – 9.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game
IOWA
6-5 guard Connor McCaffery – 7.7 points and 4.1 assists per game
6-3 guard C.J. Fredrick – 10.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game
6-6 guard Joe Wieskamp – 11.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game
6-1 guard Jordan Bohannon – 8.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game
6-11 center Luka Garza – 22.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game
PLAYER TO WATCH – Luka Garza – There might not be a player in the country playing better on the offensive end of the floor than Garza is right now. The junior big man scored 44 points at Michigan last Friday and earned national player of the week honors. Garza is playing with comfort and confidence on the low block and he has also shot the ball very well from the outside.
KEY MATCHUP – Joe Wieskamp vs. Tyrese Haliburton – Off the top, I’m not sure this true individual head to head will take place on both ends of the floor, but I think it might, at least when Iowa is on defense. Haliburton is an NBA player and potentially a lottery pick and one of the best passers in the college game this year. Wieskamp came out on Monday night and played his best game this season, scoring 23 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Wieskamp locked up Hughes from Syracuse recently on the defensive end of the floor, holding him to ten points. Can he slow down Haliburton?
STATS AND NOTES
This will be another part of the competition in the annual Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa currently holds a 9-6 lead over Iowa State after the Hawkeye women knocked off the Cyclones at Hilton Coliseum on Wednesday night.
Starting forward Jack Nunge tore his ACL at the end of the first half in the win over Cal Poly. He will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2019-20 season. Nunge was averaging 6.0 points and 4.6 rebounds coming off a redshirt season last year.
Iowa has won 20 or more games in five of the last seven seasons and finished in the upper half of the Big Ten in six of the last seven seasons.
KemPom.com rates Iowa as the 30th best team in college basketball. Iowa State is rated by KenPom.com as the 32nd best team in college basketball. KenPom.com projects Iowa State to win this game 81-78.
Jordan Bohannon is the Hawkeyes all-time leader in three point field goals made with 282. He is also 6th on the all-time assist list with 501, recently passing Ronnie Lester on the list. Bohannon has led the Big Ten in free throw percentage made the last two years.
Bohannon how has scored over 1,000 points and dished out 500 assists in his Iowa career. He joins five other former Hawkeyes in achieving those numbers. Bohannon is now tied with Jarrod Uthoff for 21st on Iowa’s all-time scoring list with 1,298
Luka Garza went over the 1,000 career point mark last Friday night with his career best 44 point performance against the Wolverines. The 44 points was the third most points scored by a player in Iowa basketball history. Garza has now scored 1,044 points in his Iowa career and he has pulled down 453 rebounds. This week he was the first Iowa player to be named national player of the week, receiving that honor from the USBWA.
Joe Wieskamp was one of ten players selected to the All Big Ten preseason team. Last season he was named to the All Freshman team in the league, averaging 11.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Wieskamp is on the preseason Jerry West Award Watch List, which recognizes the top shooting guard in college basketball.
Coming off a redshirt season, C.J. Fredrick has moved into the starting lineup. He had a career best 21 points last Sunday in Iowa’s win over Cal Poly. He also made the All Tournament team at the Las Vegas event this past weekend. Fredrick missed Iowa’s game against Syracuse with a quad injury, but returned to the starting lineup against Michigan.
Iowa is 2-0 this season in games played on Thursday. They are 27-29 in the McCaffery era on Thursday night games. Iowa is 1-0 this season in games played on ESPN2. Iowa is 16-16 in games on ESPN2 during the McCaffery era.
THE PICK
The Hawkeyes road tour continues, this time with a stop in Ames to play the Cyclones.
Hilton Coliseum has not been a friendly venue for the Iowa basketball team for more than a decade. In fact, the last time Iowa won in Ames was all the way back in March of 2003, when the Hawkeyes beat the Cyclones in an NIT game.
You can expect that Hilton will again be a less than friendly venue on Thursday night when Iowa faces a talented ISU team. Iowa State has played a challenging schedule early on, including three games against very talented teams in the Battle for Atlantis.
The Cyclones feature one of the most talented guards in the country in Tyrese Haliburton. He’s one of the best passers in the college game and while his outside shot doesn’t look like a classic jump shot, he makes over 40% from three point range.
The interesting thing about Iowa State’s team this year is that beyond Haliburton, fellow guards Rasir Bolton and Prentiss Nixon have not shot the ball well from the outside. Both are shooting under 25% from deep this year. In fact, ISU is only shooting 30% from three point range this year and in today’s game, that’s far below average. Iowa State is 281st in the country in three point percentage and 169th in three pointers made per game.
Michael Jacobson is a tough player in the post and gets the most out of his abilities. George Conditt has come along nicely this season and is averaging three blocked shots per game and his offense has improved.
What will the keys be for Iowa if they want to get out of Ames with their first win since 2003?
First, Iowa has to keep the turnovers down. Two years ago, Iowa turned it over 18 times and allowed 28 points off those turnovers. Iowa lost by six points. The Hawkeyes are one of the best teams in the country so far this year at assist/turnover ratio and that has to continue on Thursday night.
Second, the Hawkeyes need to continue to work the ball to Garza early and often. I suspect that ISU will not play like Michigan did and try and single cover him. They will likely run double teams at him from one of their guards and when they do, Iowa is going to need to find shooters on the outside. FWIW, Garza has not played well against ISU in his two opportunities. He has just six total points, so I would expect him to play with a purpose in this one.
Lastly, Iowa’s bench needs to come up big. Last year Iowa had 34 points off the bench and players like Cordell Pemsl really provided the team a huge boost. In the last two meetings, Iowa’s bench has outscored the ISU bench by 31 points. The Hawkeyes have a limited bench, but they need it to come up with points in this one.
As with every game in Ames, I expect the Cyclones to come out sky high and the crowd will be loud. How will the Hawkeyes react, particularly some of the younger players? Iowa’s going to have to manage the runs that we know will be coming from the Cyclones. Fran McCaffery will have to try and manage those runs by using his timeouts because the game can get away fast at Hilton. Ultimately, I think Iowa keeps it close and this is certainly a game Iowa can win. I think ISU just finds a way to get this one late. IOWA STATE 83 IOWA 77
