Watching a news bit on China's visit to the UK in which Xi Jinping wished the group he was addressing "to skill higher and to see farther."

Strange phrasing.

I found myself wondering if this is some sort of cultural push and whether it originates with the modern government or is a traditional saying.

A saying like that, if common, can have an effect on cognition.

What's the difference between urging an employee to work harder vs to skill higher? Seems like a qualitative difference to me.

"Live long and prosper" suggests yet another emphasis.

Yes, I agree with this. It suggests improving yourself rather than simply working harder at the sorry ass job you already have. Good message, IMHO.

He might have meant "work smarter, not harder" but I choose to believe he was just saying "scale higher, see father."

I'm pretty sure that's what he was saying because I translated his name to English in Google translate and it came back "Captain Obvious"
