Tom Crean fired

Unless the AD already has a verbal contract with a great replacement lined up like Miller or Marshall I think this was a dumb move for a team that won the B1G outright last season. Indy is thinking the program will right itself with a new coach based on ancient history but the program isn't what it used to be and while they've been down others have caught up or surpassed them.

You are right. The AD doesn't make this move if he didn't think he had a high tier replacement in line.

I would argue though. A good coach could come right in a bring Indiana back up. It is not like they didn't have good talent this year.....and again they won the Big 10 regular season title last year.

I wonder if this is why the no home game NIT? Crean was out of town, did they bring someone in for a chat?

Firing a coach and bringing in a new one you risk offsetting team chemistry and seeing a mass exodus of players from the program. Probably should have given Crean another year but we'll see what happens. Coaching changes can and have killed programs.

I have the feeling that the AD wouldn't have been around for another year if Crean was. I get the move but I also think its hard to justify firing a coach that just won the Big a year ago. Ultimately, I'm sure it was his lack of success in the tourney that killed him. That and he just isn't a likable guy. I'm calling it now . . . Crean to ISU when Prohm takes the LSU job.

Eh, I really don't know about this move. Lot's of big time recruits come from the state of Indiana. Can Indiana University recruit itself? If they can, all they need to get is a big time X's and O's coach and they're set.

Welp, then Alford is all set to blow UCLA's opening game and catch a flight back home welcomed with "open arms".

Hey, it's worked before for Alford, right?

I thought TC would get one more year ... He did seem to underachieve given the talent they usually bring in ... Big 10 coach of the year last year and canned the next ... I can't imagine why some coaches even want to coach anymore ... I understand the money part, but the pressure to win and WIN NOW is at a new level ...

166-135 overall at Indiana

I would love it if they get Alford. Their home run hire is obviously Brad Stevens but he's not leaving the league

Interesting scenario there.

Prohm to LSU is the first I have heard, but he did coach in LA for a number of years. Doubtful, but it's possible.

Crean to Iowa St to place Prohm. Not a chance. Pollard has not shown that he would hire a higher profile coach. He's more likely to go with someone that has won a lot of games at a Mid-Major. More likely would be to try to lure back Hoiberg if he were let go by the Bulls.....but even that is not likely.

Nope they didn't want to devalue the hall by playing an NIT game there. Apparently coaches throwing tantrums, choking players etc doesn't devalue it......just NIT games LMAO.
Is the ceiling falling apart again? That was a bad omen for us a few years back when that happened!

Crean's championship last year hid how he wasn't that great of coach. His Big 10 coaching record is worse than Alfords at Iowa (And that wasn't good.)
Crean either had a great year or a mediocre year and missed tourney. Nothing inbetween. For the talent on the roster, he should have done more. And that was from an Indiana fan who expected him gone weeks ago.

Ehh...he took over a team that was in much in worse shape than Lickliter left Iowa in, like having to find guys on campus to walk on just to fill out a roster. His first three years dug him a huge hole (8-46) to get out of. He did underachieve with a lot of the talent he had especially with his 2013 team, that should have been a Final Four team. But before he got to Indiana they hadn't been landing that kind of talent to begin with.

Especially when his 4 million buyout drops to 1 million in three months.

Great was hoping he would stay For ten more years. I called it after the Indians loss in carver , I remember Indiana thanking us for beating them. They all wanted him gone.

Also said groce was a for sure fire, still thought crean had a slight chance. Like 1 percent chance lol.

No attempt whatsoever to recruit Indiana kids is at least part of the issue fans, and the administration, had with Crean. Lots of verbiage from Glass about hiring an Indiana person in his press conference.

It is not so much that Crean did not recruit Indiana kids hard, it's that the top Indiana talent don't seem to be interested in staying in state anymore. Indiana, Butler, Notre Dame and my Boilermakers recruit in state kids hard but they end up going to big boys like Kentucky or Duke. Caleb Swanigan is the only recent big talent Indiana kid I don't think Crean recruited much. There is a Junior right now from New Albany, IN that is a complete stud. The in-state schools do not appear to be his top choices.

That is the point I am trying to make, he wasn't recruiting Langford hard at all. This is coming from New Albany people with knowledge of the situation. I don't know how hard he went after McIntosh, but I have also heard he made little to no effort to recruit him either.

They are not gonna pay him 4 million. That buyout is paid out over the length of his remaining contract. But that is only if he does not get hired in the three years. If he gets another job in that time his buyout is null and void as long as he makes more than the 1.3 per year IU owes him. Its not like they write a 4 million dollar check.

Thank you. I know exactly how buyouts are paid. You've missed my point in trying to point out an error that wasn't there. Iowa fans know how this works with the robbery committed by Licklighter.

Like him or not, Tom Crean will probably have a good HC job within the next few weeks if he wants to coach next year
