Tom Crean fired

Fred Glass, the IU AD:

"The expectations for Indiana University basketball are to perennially contend for and win multiple Big Ten championships, regularly go deep in the NCAA tournament, and win our next national championship -- and more after that," Glass said in the statement. "We will identify and recruit a coach who will meet these expectations."

"And he'll stand nine feet tall and blow fire from his rump! He'll make the most interesting man in the world seem like a boring geriatric! Our new coach will be a Nobel Prize Winner AND a former Olympic medalist in multiple specialties! For we are Indiana! Mighty Indiana!"

I wish they'd have to take Groce and Illinios take Crean. :)

I thought TC would get one more year ... He did seem to underachieve given the talent they usually bring in ... Big 10 coach of the year last year and canned the next ... I can't imagine why some coaches even want to coach anymore ... I understand the money part, but the pressure to win and WIN NOW is at a new level ...

166-135 overall at Indiana
They make enough money in just a few years to be set for life. Just look at Lickliter.

Crean seems to be a recruiter with no apparent talent for coaching. Or, Indiana simply draws good players, in which he has no apparent talent for either.

This is not good for Iowa. Indiana has screwed up 3 times in a row after firing Bobby Knight. I'm guessing they are due to get it right.

Isn't a win against Iowa good enough to keep your job?

Good question! Here is the IU AD's answer to YOUR question:

"In the final analysis I had to evaluate where Iowa was. I have a great respect for Iowa. It’s a wonderful institution and a wonderful basketball program. But in the final analysis, their record was where it was, our record was where it was. Fair enough?’’

Wisconsin fans will miss him.
All BIG teams will miss him! Crean was fired because 3 reasons...

1st. He had no clue how to coach defense and his team's had zero desire to take care of the ball. Also, he was just an average offensive coach at best. He recruited shooters first and if they were missing that night....IU was going to lose. That's why he was 1 and 97 against Wisconsin.

2nd. He was unable to recruit the state of Indiana. High school coaches completely shut him out.

3rd. His team's were too inconsistent, it was either win the big, or finish in the bottom half of the big.

I saw a state the other day that was extremely glarring....
Knight finished in the bottom half of the big 1 time
Davis did it 1 time
Samson 0 times
Crean did it 6 times.

Since 1972, IU has finished in the bottom half of the big 8 times...6 of those times was from crean.

This is basically how I feel. Cream had talent, lots of it, but he really couldn't win at a level commensurate with the talent he brought to Bloomington. His teams didn't play defense, they weren't mentally tough, and they finished relatively poorly more often than not.

One can argue about the bare cupboards that Crean and Fran had when they got to their respective schools. But it boggles my mind when I look at the relative amounts of talent each coach has had during their tenures that Fran has a higher winning percentage at Iowa than Crean has at Indiana.

One of Crean's problems was his propensity for
throwing his own players under the bus. When
Indiana lost, it was the fault of various players.
When they won, it was his coaching. His players
never really embraced him as their coach and
the communication was not good.

I completely agree, Fran is by far as better coach. Even if you take away Creans first 3 years...the talent he brought in they should have been consistently a top 10 team imo. I laugh when ever I hear that the reason they were bad this year was because of injuries. Even after OG went down, they still had 2 5*, 4 4* on the team. It's ridiculous that they didn't contend for a BIG championship strictly based on talent on paper.

I am a little surprised, since IU won the B1G last year. I think Crean is a very good recruiter, but a below average coach otherwise. I hope IU isn't able to hire any of the coaches mentioned. The B1G has a lot of good coaches, and two of the worst are now gone.

He got "Creaned".

His team was a huge disappointment, but still an odd move after they won the Big 10 Regular Season last year.

They lost two starters. Before losing Anunoby, they beat Kansas & UNC. Nobody can say that... Anunoby was going to be a lottery pick... That's the equivalent of us losing Jok and Bohannon.

Like Iowa, IU only has one senior. They should be a bada$$ team next year. Especially if Anunoby is 100%.

Bad news for Iowa. Indiana gets an enormous advantage in recruiting and officiating. Crean was not a good coach which allowed the also ran schools like Iowa to grab some wins. A good coach will return Indiana to its former status I fear.
