As devils advocate, I'd maybe like to see the red shirt limited to medical/injury.

If you aren't ready to wrestle as a frosh, you have three more years to compete. Make the most of it. More kids get to compete this way.

Really? You want to give LESS opportunity?

I’m an advocate of going the other way. You get 5 years. No redshirts. No 6th years. Participate all 5. Takes all complication and guess work out of it.

I think I saw an interview on Flo, or read an interview (can't remember which) where NATO said he wasn't planning on wrestling down at 125# until January, so the possibility that one of their incoming freshmen would wrestle this season was already in play. The bigger issue is, how long until NATO comes back, and will he be at full strength? Cory Clark missed a lot last season, but came through at the NCAAs. We'll see if NATO's can do the same. At the NCAAs, tOSU must have NATO and a few unexpected breaks to knock off PSU (duh, Captain Obvious).

As far as the Koontz brothers go, they wrestled 113 and 120 last year. I think it was Brady that was actually in the rankings most of the year (I don't subscribe to Intermat, but I get WIN Magazine- he was always in the top 12-15) and Dylan was ranked in the 20s later on. Leading up to the high school state tournament, they got bit by the injury bug (allegedly, Dylan had two dislocated ribs at state). Brady's injury also kept him out of Northern Plains (where Dylan beat Teske 13-7). They both placed at Fargo a bunch of times (mostly in Greco), with each having a go in the Jr. Greco finals. Brady made a Cadet World Team in Greco as well. Not a bad resume, and certainly can't be labeled "depth guys." I am guessing they are still a bit undersized though, but Dylan is usually about 7-8 lbs. heavier than Brady.

Saw this over on bucknuts, another tOSU wrestling forum. So take it FWIW. Would really suck for Nato if true, and hurt the buckeyes.

It's hard for the regular Joe to graduate in 4 years. Throw in all the time training on top of studying, I say give them 5 years if they want (with a redshirt).

Good info. Wasn't aware of the win over Teske. Despite the positive comments about them on this board, I've never considered them elite enough to be game changers and was surprised at tOSU's strong interest in them. The B1G gauntlet is not for the faint of heart. (Ask Dan Dennis about his true freshman year.) Guess we'll see how it all shakes out.

Yes it is. Freshman (especially boys) get hit by the partying and freedom like a Mack Truck. We've seen what it's done to some of our guys. 5 should be the norm for college.

Another injury report: Apparently Returning All American Preston Weigel of Okie State has an undisclosed upper body injury and they are hoping he is able to return for the 2nd half of the year. Unfortunate for Weigel and OSU.

I can see that but only 4 National championship tourneys or 4 regional tourneys depending on your talent and or success.

No. That’s the point of the change—remove the complexities. And it would be for all sports not just wrestling.
