Tom's Interview Soldier Salute 2024

reading between the lines it is obvious that Gabe was giving Cardenas a ride in Buchanan’s Tesla and showing him around. they had to leave early because they didn’t want to be late for dinner reservations with figueroa
You think Luke Stanich made it too?

You caught that too?

I think he's just being coy and playing his cards close to the vest. I think it means they have a preferred path with contingencies, but don't need to lay that all out now.
it most definitely means that Tom doesn't want anyone to know what he's thinking - he's been HC now for what 15 years and somehow every year people still think he's going to be forthright with all of this stuff

That’s the kind of stuff that bothers me a bit. Make a decision. Tell us the decision is none of our business, if necessary.
He said pulling a redshirt on someone would be a harder decision if the other option at that weight was definitely worse. H red admitted the talent at 184 is very close. This tells me he keeps Angelo in redshirt. Even if Gabe had a season ending injury, we may be able to hang onto second with Nelson jumping in at 184.

Tom keeps everything close to the vest, just like Carl.

In Cael's post Black Knight Invitational presser, he explicitly explained his thought process for when he had teammates compete in the finals, and when he did not and opted for the double no contest. And like somebody else said, his decision was made public well before the finals.

But yeah, with other things like injuries, sure, he is just as likely to provide misleading information as part of strategic deception. I think that's normal for competive sports' coaches. Don't see anything wrong with it, myself.

Why would it be harder? It seems like it would be easier. Now, if he actually pulls Angelo's redshirt as part of this kind of tougher decision, that reflects on Gabe's relative ability. Regardless, barring Gabe MRS, I think Angelo stays in RS.

He probably meant it would be harder because we still wouldn’t beat PSU with Angelo even if he was replacing someone not as good, but redshirting this year would be much better for his wrestling career.

It would be harder because he might actually have to contemplate it for starters; if you have a really good option without wasting a year of eligibility for a true freshman who has arguably the best two college wrestler P4P at his weight, it might not be worth the mental anquish. I think that's what he meant.

Ok. I listened to the interview again. I don’t think he said anything about the difficulty of making a decision (184 and 174). He said they don't have to make a decision. He supported that by saying there wasn't that much of a talent difference (one may assume team scoring wise), among his options.

So it remains open for him to later conclude there is a material difference among his options, and letting that conclusion dictate future decisions. Improvement or injury creating greater differentiation would appear to be in play here.

While it’s nice having two options I hope whoever goes has a chance to get enough matches and wins it doesn’t negatively effect seeding
