It is interesting to see the "modern era" list:

Warren Spahn...........363 career wins
Greg Maddux............355
Roger Clemens.........354
Steve Carlton............329
Nolan Ryan...............324
Don Sutton.............. 324
Phil Niekro................318
Gaylord Perry...........314
Tom Seaver.............. 311
Tom Glavine.............305

There will perhaps never be another 300
wins in a career for a MLB pitcher. Today's
game is controlled by the pitch count and
when you get over 100 your day is over.

SAN FRANCISCO — Tell today’s starting pitchers there was a time when strikes were balls, fair was foul and safe was out, and those things will sound just as plausible as what took place 50 years ago.

On July 2, 1963, Juan Marichal pitched a 16-inning shutout against the Milwaukee Braves, outdueling Warren Spahn, who pitched 151/3 scoreless innings before Willie Mays won it 1-0 with a home run.

Marichal threw 227 pitches; Spahn threw 201.

“It’s almost hard to believe that something like that happened,” Giants right-hander Matt Cain said.

“You can’t even comprehend something like that in today’s game,” Barry Zito said.

Marichal vs. Spahn at Candlestick Park remains among baseball’s greatest pitching duels — two Hall of Famers going toe-to-toe for 4 hours and 10 minutes.

Spahn was 42 years old and in the last of his 13 20-win seasons; Marichal was 25 and on his way to winning 20 games for the first time.

Four Braves on that list. Smoltz very well could have made it had he stayed healthy. I doubt we ever see anyone with 200 wins and 150 saves again.

The quality start by a pitcher is defined
as pitching 6 innings and giving up 3 runs
or less. MLB has an image problem for
starting pitchers. Nolan Ryan was one of
the more popular pitchers in his era. He
enjoyed throwing 9 inning no-hitters. Today,
his pitch count would relegate him to
walk off the mound in the 7th inning.

Bottom Line: Nolan Ryan threw 7 no-hitters,
12 one-hitters and 18 two-hitters.

That’s insane, even without the modern strategy of exchanging relievers every 2 or 3 hitters.

Would love to see more knuckleballers like Niekro in the game. Throwing 60-70 mph junk and playing til you’re almost 50, that’s the way to do it. 😁
