IF Ohio State fires Ryan Day, guess what name has been trending the most to replace him? I’ll give you a hint… his first name is Matt, and his last name is Campbell. 😜 Would make sense given his Ohio roots. Link below…

Campbell to Ohio State?

From the few ISU people I know they anticipate he will pull a Ferentz and stick around for 25-30 years.

Day still has a $40 million buyout. I know, it's not Jimbo Fisher huge, but it's still a lot of money even for a premier program. Even if OSU pisses its pants in the opening playoff round, I'm 90% certain he gets to try and turn things around in 2025.

Don't get me wrong, OSU is still preparing for a disaster scenario, and will pay top dollar for the home run hire. That's far easier said than done - they want their Saban, and not some NFL retread or G5 upstart.

Campbell is very happy in Ames. He's getting paid well. They're winning, but without the requirement of the alumni and fans to win at an OSU level. They love him in Ames, so he can stay there for the next 20 years if he wants, complete job security. And since ISU is now in a watered-down conference, he can lead ISU to some conference titles and playoff appearances. I think it would be hard to pry him out of there. If any school would be of interest to him, I imagine it would be OSU as it is at the pinnacle of college football, but I'm not sure it would be a slam dunk for the reasons above.

The AD who paid Jimbo his $70M+ buyout is guess where? Yep, OSU. $40M is nothing to that cat.

I don't think there is anyway that tOSU offers the job to MC. He's just not ..... a star. He's a lot like Ryan Day actually - just a very good football coach.

MC has a very good gig going at ISU. I imagine tOSU was his dream job once, but I wonder if it is now?

Until the Big Ten and SEC just give the big middle finger to the rest of the leagues.

Sure. Stick around for 20 or 30 years. Play in a mediocre league. Win a lot of games. Make a ton of money. It's worked pretty well for KF, aided by the recently defunct West Division; maybe not so much for Iowa.

Some leaders, like Theo Epstein who broke the World Series curse of both the Red Sox and the Cubs, say it's a good idea to move on after ten years. More than that in the same job inevitably leads to complacency. KF would seem to be a prime example of that assertion.

This is a tough hire for Ohio State. Day has been just about as successful as Urban Meyer but loses the wrong games. There is probably only a handful of coaches that would be satisfactory for them to pick. I think they would have to have someone in place before pulling the rug out from under Day. They won't want to get rid of him, before having his replacement in place. This isn't a job that is just going to be opened up to everyone. Vrabel probably at the top, Marcus Freeman, OSU alum and has shown at Notre Dame that he could be successful. Urban probably still has the chops for 4-5 more years, Fickel would have been a good possibility, if he hadn't had the disastrous interim year before he was ready for the big time. Doubt they would trust him, but his success at Cincy was stellar. I think all four of those would be ahead of Campbell.

Day isn't getting let go this season IMO, they are still very much in the hunt for the championship. Now if they get torched in the first round by a lower seed, then all bets are off. They have very little patience in Columbus.

Why wouldn't he. This years a great example that he's got a shot to be in the CFP with an average team in a below average conference and he'll never get fired. He'd be a damn fool to leave....

I don't see anyway they could rehire Meyer, after the mess he had left behind when he left both OSU and Florida.....

I know people who know people who know the family. You're correct in his family has been very happy in Ames. Not sure if MC has a desire to reach a championship & get back to roots, but if so now is the time. First time ISU has 10 wins ever & he's a hot commodity. If his kids are doing well in school though, he may be there for awhile. Kids can have a huge effect on a career change/move.

Ryan Day is a made field goal away from NC game in 2023 and a 2 made field goals away from beating Mich this year.
I think their QB play is what prevents them from 12-0 this year. Of course the Head Coach is ultimately responsible, so I guess Day shares the blame.

Every ISU fan I know...and I know many...believes there are 4-5 schools that MC would consider jumping to with the right offer. Ohio State being the foremost of those...closely followed by Notre Dame and Michigan. Beyond that, doubt he'd be interested in going anywhere. He's a midwestern guy and his recruiting grounds are midwestern...don't seem him interested in an SEC or ACC type job unless the pay is just insane. Even then, good chance he'd say no.

I think he'd do very well at OSU honestly. He's done tremendously well with severe limitations at ISU.

Staying at ISU seems absurd to me with what's likely on the horizon there but who knows. Money isn't an issue I'm sure. Seems like a very loyal guy. I can respect that.

I don't see ISU recovering if they lose him. I'd feel kind of bad for them. A little bit anyway.

Iowa State is tOSU’s “go to school” when choosing football coaches. Earle Bruce and now Campbell…if this does happen…their old AD (Gene Smith) got his start at ISU, fwiw.

Makes sense. They hired Earle Bruce awat from ISU years ago. It's a pipeline. (Oh, and don't think for a minute, MC wouldn't jump at the chance to

Just a couple years ago he was getting harassed by ISU fans after losing to Iowa and then a MAC team. Message board warriors were all over him. My how the worm has turned.

OSU was favored by 20 against Michigan. This was an average Power five team, at best. The game should not have been close playing at the Shoe.

I don’t know if Campbell’s style (trusting the process..etc) would work well at a blue blood in this day and age.

The Big 12 is headed towards midmajor status. No way a coach stays at a school in a non power flailing conference. The shoe will be dropping soon for College football and the Big 12 won't be at the table.

1. He is a celebrity so his kids are probably sheltered a bit. 2. I'm pretty sure there are schools in Columbus. In fact Ames offers zero parochial school options which is not mandatory but often preferred. Columbus is littered with private and parochial schools. 3. Family, he is from Ohio isn't he?
