Watching the replay of the game again (it hasn’t gotten old yet), I’m wondering why Iowa couldn’t have argued that the dropped, then kicked, punt attempted was a drop kick. Section 16, article 3 of NCAA rules still allow for a drop kick and it is defined as:
Drop Kick
A drop kick is a kick by a player who drops the ball and kicks it as it touches the ground.
Would the problem be “as it touches the ground?” What does “as” mean here— “at the instant” or “while?” All’s well that ends well, but I’m curious what those of you who are familiar with the nuances of the rules say about this?
