Travel Advice For IU Game

If you're coming to the game, take note:

Hwy. 37 from Indianapolis to Bloomington is under construction.
Several places around Martinsville where its 1 lane each way.
Plan an extra 30-45 minutes for that drive.
Our injuries/losses may lessen our crowd, but we'll see.

If you are like me, and just want to keep rolling, 3 alternatives from Indianapolis that are longer miles but probably equal or lesser time:

1. Hwy 67 to 231 to Spencer, then 46 to the Stadium.
2. I-70 to 231 to Spencer, then 46 to the Stadium.
3. I-65 south to Columbus, then 46 to the Stadium, but Brown County (Columbus-to-Nashville) is famous for leaf-watching-traffic-congestion too, and the Nashville-to-Bloomington segment is scenic-curvy.

The big gravel parking lot around our stadium has been paved/lined since you last came to Bloomington.
A few big grass areas saved for picnicing.

As for the game, you guys have turned out to be tougher than I expected.
8-0 is a credit to your kids and your staff.

We haven't put it together yet.

We barely won each OOC game - then played Ahia State a decent game that cost us our QB for 2 games and our RB for more.

If - big IF - Howard is back at RB full-power, he is a HUGE help to us. A big old strong RB. He took 11 carries against MSU, but was not full-go. At a minimum he'll have some rust.

Sudfeld is back at QB and getting better - especially as our young WR's get better. (Our decade of having at least 2 excellent/reliable WR's is over - we're growing a pair, but still cooking.)

Our OL was expected to be GREAT, and dominated early, but the run game has been out of sync due to both injury and a little sub-par OL play. Still a good OL.

Our defense is ... sigh.
When 10 guys play well, we give up big play TD's.
REALLY young secondary.
Decent LB's.
Decent DL/DE's.
VERY inconsistent overall.

Travel safe.

See ya at the yard.

1. picnicing? thats a new one
2. well played

Ooops.

Ledft out a part.

South of the Stadium, across 17th Street, is a l-a-r-g-e area of grass/trees for tailgating.
Most of it is family friendly.
The student section is where The Student Debauchery Contest occurs - like a zoo where the monkeys drink.

Hopefully the Indiana defense is just what the doctor ordered for our offense. At several points, the offense has gone MIA for entire halves. I think we will need some big plays on both sides of the ball to keep this Hoosier team at arms length. This is a much less favorable matchup for us than Maryland. That being said, Iowa doesn't seem to be a team that's going to give up 500 yards and a bunch of big plays to anyone. There's no doubt we deserve to be favorites, but a competitive game for 4 quarters is what I expect.

For some students coming from Iowa City and looking for a good time, what lot would you suggest we park and tailgate in?

17th Street Grass lots is where the students party

The paved lots right around the stadium are more family-ish/RV's

All lots are $20 game day - except the ones closest to the stadium reserved for hoity toity donors.

Thanks! Can we get in the student lot as non-students?

Yes - according to my nephew - the IU tuition machine.
I don't think its marked off - its just where the music stage is usually set up.
(You can hear the Student Debauchery Contest before you see it.)
I walk my HS kids through there to show them what not to do:
"See that kid lying in his own puke? Don't be that kid!"

You can DEFINITELY get in the grass lots.
It a big area.
The whole area is about 4-5 blocks wide and 3-4 blocks deep.
Might be 40-50 acres.
LOTS of folks tailgating - you can roam the whole area.
Same for the lots north of 17th around the stadium.

Have fun - but DON'T be THAT kid!
The cops are nice if you are nice and don't keep your "soda" in a beer can.
Be cool.

Thanks again. We're all 21 and most of us can hold our liquor like any respectable B1G fan should. We had a great time @jNW this year and I'm excited to see Bloomington!

Here's more Bloomington info:

Nick's English Hut - best sports bar on the planet.
On Kirkwood, downtown.
Stadium is on 17th
Kirkwood is the equivalent of 5th.
Pizza - extra cheese - sausage - pitcher of beverage. You're welcome.
I spent a LOT of money in Nick's.
Here's Nick's the night we beat Kentucky:

Lesser mortals will suggest Yogi's at 10th and Indiana.
It's nice. - but not the best on the planet

Irish Lion - drink a yard of beer?

Breakfast - either Village Inn (Kirkwood, same block as Nick's) or The Uptown Cafe (Kirkwood and Walnut).

Steak - Janko's Little Zagreb's.

IU is basically between 3rd Street (south edge) and Hwy 46 (north edge - by the stadium), Indiana (west edge) and Union (east edge)

Jacobs School of Music is at 3rd and Union.
Business School ala Marc Cuban in at 10th and Fee.
Where Kirkwood hits Indiana is The Sample Gates, Old Campus, and the Union Building.
Nice area to wander.

Hoagy Carmichael hung out at the Gables - a half block south of Kirkwood on Indiana.

7th and Indiana is Dunn Meadow - Hippieville back in the day.

Pretty decent of you to do this. The guys on your message board are decent as well. A nice departure from some other scholl's message boards. If you ever visit Iowa City I think you'll find the vast, vast majority of our fans will treat you respectfully as well.

Thanks!

My son and I have road tripped to Big Ten games over the years.
Always nice to get some inside scoop for a nice trip.
