*****Trevin Jirak COMMITS to IOWA*****

BMC is huge on strength training. Fran wanted his guys skinny and fast, so they can run the floor and not play defense.

We are going to see a giant change in that area.
Mulvey eventually put on muscle. But I agree with u. Ben stated strength and condoning is huge. 4-5 days a week even with the season going on.

Guys going to slim down and hopefully get quicker. Most importantlyhe has to buy in or hes a lost cause. With work he could be a problem eventually

I get a kick out of people like you who seem to know it all. Coach Mac has been on the job for like a minute and you already know more than him. If you don’t know what you’re talking about then keep your trap shut!
No one is claiming to know more than coach, we are just stating the obvious in that he is desperate to fill the roster by who is coming to town. This isn't abnormal for year 1 following a long tenured coach, recruiting for the following season will be the first real test.

I am hoping this kid is viewed as a project who could develop into a decent role player in a couple years. I don’t know how else to see it.

Like I’ve said many times before, it seems apparent to me that the Iowa job is going to require more be done with less. Ben McCollum is probably best suited for that role.

Well that’s a switch up, most of your types make it seem like it’s a simple job winning at Iowa. I will tell you I do love getting a new coach and all the grace fans give them. Hopefully it lasts more than a couple years….🤷‍♂️

As a devil's advocate, doesn't it seems as though we are filling our roster with Mid-Major players, which was one of the complaints about McCaffery's rosters?

New coach, new Grace, it won’t last long if he doesn’t win 🤷‍♂️

Which would include literally ALL of the P4 coaches and mostly ALL of the D1 coaches in the United States.

Yep. They're ALL crazy. Every single one of em.

Mac and RimjobTom are the only ones who know what's up.

New coach…,.that’s all you need to know. If this is who he’s signing in / years they’ll be out for blood.

You say this like it's some sort of deep revelation. Of course the new coach, who is a proven winner and master at player development, is going to get grace. We saw what the last guy was able to do in 15 years, soooo.......

I mean Mac has won over 400 games at an 82% rate as a college coach. NobodyNeedsMe has won exacty 0 college games. Yep, you know what's up way moreso than Ben McCollum. Why don't you quit your minimum wage job as semen taster and put in for any of the open jobs every spring? I really feel like the nation is missing out on a true coaching savant!

Where the hell have you been? There’s a shit ton of guys on here who know more than the coaches, and they’ve been here for a long time….

Nope, just want it on record for when they turn, because they always do

I don't know that "too many mid-major guys" was the specific complaint about McCaffery's rosters. I think it was more about having too many "unathletic" players, and too many guys who weren't well-suited for the style that McCaffery played.

In that sense, the players McCollum is bringing in seem to be an improvement.

That said, while I remain satisfied and optimistic about the direction our roster is going, I do believe we need some of the more highly regarded players we are recruiting to join the team. I suspect pretty much every poster on this board feels similar.

Is this not something that goes along with earning $300K per month.
For perspective, since no one ever cares about the ridiculous money the coaches and players are making.
A new teacher makes $50k/year. They would work over 6 years to make one of his months salary. I see way more critics of teachers than fran mccaffery.

Desperate for who?

He's going after players who had good to great seasons that want to move up.

Looks like he's wanting the same players other power conferences coaches want.

I see what you're saying

Looks like he's trying to get players that make a good percentage of their shots when they shoot the ball. I wouldn't necessary call that desperate.

I'm intrigued by his offensive skills at 6'10/11

As long as he redshirts this year and as long as the Iowa staff is willing to move on at year 3 if he's not going to be in the mix than it's all upside imo.

With Iowas money they can't fill the whole roster up with impact players so may as well take some low risk high upside gambles with the end of the roster. It's low risk as long as they are will to move off if it's not working.
Yes
This is part of playing the moneyball game. Take some calculated risk on lower cost players. An important part of that strategy, as you note, is being prepared to cut losses if the gamble doesn't pay off.

Go take a look at the Drake players bodies vs the team we had last year. Both Banks and Cam play much more physical for their height than Freeman ever did. Howard is an impressive physical guy at 6-5. Jumps out of the gym but very powerful. Combs plays strong down low for a guard. I for 1 am excited to see a team go out and grind and fight on a nightly basis.

Absolutely. That Drake team LOOKED like a basketball team. Strong, athletic, physical. I can’t wait to watch them all next winter!

6'11 and thick makes him a big body guy that can compete in B1G and Ncaa tourney. I like the idea of these smaller guys that have late growth spurt and retain some of the skills they had developed playing guard. I don't think this is gamble at all....its all upside if he develops and minimal NIL cost if he occupies a deep bench roster practice spot for a couple years without playong. No team plays 13 guys.

Fran aways banked schollies and gave out schollies to of walk-ons/prospects with little upside because he was running his own family business/fiefdom instead of actually trying to compete for excellence. This dude Jirak looks like he has some skills. If not, off to Kirkwood in 2 years.

Ben McCollum will have the team training/lifting weights. See the video below:

Northwest Men's Basketball Preseason - Warrior
Fran never valued centers except for Woodbury and he couldn't jump much over 2 inches with dinosaur arms. Mulvey in 4 years defiantly gained weight and muscle, but there was always a player that Fran valued instead of Riley. I still believe if Riley was used more he would have blossomed into a serviceable player. Just wasn't meant to be, he got his degree and hopefully he will get he time on the court at Siena. Once a HAWK always a HAWK!

Cool, we’ll see how you feel in a few years. I’ll be here to remind you

Fran never valued centers besides Woodbury? What are you talking about?

We had a true center on the roster just about every year. Ever hear of a guy named Luka Garza?
