Terry clearly has the resume to be a highly respected and successful head coach, so why not? He needs to make the move relatively soon before he's nearing retirement age, and he's not going to get it by staying in Tom's shadow his whole career. I don't think it's an indictment of anything to do with Iowa.
The real question here is How would this effect the Iowa program? If it does happen and Terry moves on. My first thought was this would be bad bad bad, then I thought well we need a shift and maybe Spencer is going to be on staff along with a high caliber outsider. I don’t think Spencer really needs coaching that bad. His body is the limiting factor — it will hold up, or it won’t.
His body is definitely a concern, but I also think he is fragile mentally. It seems to me that guys like him want something so badly, that it almost becomes mentally overwhelming. Just my opinion and given without any personal interactions with him.
No, you’re right, everyone needs or could at least benefit from coaching. It’s just that Terry is not the only guy that can fit that bill in this case when there are bigger concerns in play. Tom is pretty qualified, too. Terry testing the waters is no biggie. The timing of a nice opening can’t always be what you want. Gotta throw your name in the hat whenever it is the hat comes around.
