I’m ok accepting a gift from country to country. If they want to broker a better relationship with the US I’m fine with accepting a 747. But then the gift should be to the United States and not to a foundation that will ultimately be controlled by Trump. Why does a Trump library need a 747? Why would anyone be ok with that?

And we clearly wasted government legal time figuring out why this could be ok when it is straight up violation of the emoluments clause.

I was under the impression that the current AF1
was in need of so many upgrades in communication and security capabilities that a new plane made more sense. Boeing has been working on this but they have announced that completion is about five years away (per the WSJ)
I don’t think the current laws in place allow a US President to accept gifts of this nature outright. I wouldn’t be in favor of such a gift either.
It’s usual for visiting dignitaries of foreign governments to exchange gifts but they usually go to somewhere like the Smithsonian. A plane might be difficult to find space for.
The Reagan Library in Cali has a retired AF1.
Are we sure that the Administration isn’t responding to someone about an unsolicited offer to “loan” a plane until the new one is finished?

There are definite restrictions on all Presidents receiving gifts from visiting foreign dignitaries. The US also presents gifts when on state visits abroad.

No I don’t know anyone with a private plane, but these days a tricked out Lear Jet or a new Gulfstream can approach that amount.
