New Jersey residents haven’t had much love for Gov. Chris Christie and after he endorsed Donald Trump in the presidential race, his horrendous approval rating has sunk even lower.
A poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Public Mind shows that there was a considerable shift in opinion of Christie while the poll was being conducted over five days. Christie’s endorsement on Friday fell right in the middle of that period.
Prior to Friday’s announcement, 33 percent approved of Christie, but that fell to 27 percent after he threw his support behind Trump. Independents in New Jersey had the biggest swing, going from a 34 percent approval rating to only 18 percent.
“Christie’s return to his roots after suspending his White House run was an opportunity to reestablish some good will with voters. But joining forces with Donald Trump was hardly a vehicle for getting voters to reconsider their sour mood toward the Governor,” Krista Jenkins, professor of political science and director of Public Mind, said in a statement.
Christie has made multiple appearances with Trump, including in Florida on Tuesday night, when he set social media on fire as he stood motionless behind Trump and delivered a death stare for minutes on end.
The Public Mind poll also asked respondents to describe Christie in one word and the overwhelming winner was “bully” while “arrogant” came in second.
It’s the second blow in as many days after six Gannett-owned newspapers in New Jersey ran a joint editorial calling on him to resign.

Christie has long had a contentious relationship with his own state’s residents. In July, a poll showed a majority wanted him to resign and he denied people hate him, citing his presidential run as the reason.
“The people in your state go ‘Oh, you’re leaving us? You don’t care about us as much?’” Christie said. “And your numbers go down.”
It’s a similar response he gave in May, when he said the only reason 65 percent of New Jersey resident said he’d make a lousy president was because they want him to stay as governor.
The Public Mind poll was conducted among a random sample of 379 respondents.
