Trump loves Putin and other authoritarians; wishes he were one

So I was going over old Trump content -- trying to figure out a source for every mention of Putin he made, something I don't see -- and found this:

The very plain reading of this is that he really wanted to be pals with Putin and held some admiration for the man. This still appears to be true.

A CNN KFile review of Trump’s statements reveals that Trump has contradicted himself over the years about the nature of his relationship with Putin and about his business dealings in Russia.

Here he is praising Putin for his intelligence in invading Ukraine:

“I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius,’” Trump said during an interview with conservative radio hosts last month. “Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine – of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful.”

The very next day, Trump said almost the same thing.

“They say, ‘Trump said Putin’s smart.’ I mean, he’s taking over a country for two dollars’ worth of sanctions,” Trump told a crowd at a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago, according to a recording of the event. “I’d say that’s pretty smart. He’s taking over a country – really a vast, vast location, a great piece of land with a lot of people, and just walking right in.”

Then, in a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference several days later, Trump tripled down. “Yesterday reporters asked me if I thought President Putin was smart,” he said. “I said, ‘Of course, he’s smart,’ to which I was greeted with ‘Oh, that’s such a terrible thing to say.’ I like to tell them, ‘Yes, he’s smart.’”

I'd say it could be envy too, which can sometimes seem like love. John Kelly indicated that Trump was essentially surprised and upset at his lack of actual power as President. Which meant essentially he was constrained and couldn't just fulfill his impulses. Trump looks at Putin, essentially unconstrained, thinks: "wants to take Ukraine, I'll take it". That sort of prey on the weak strength is a trait Trump admires. Putin has the ability and uses it.

Here Trump is joking with Putin about getting rid of journalists:

Donald Trump joked with Vladimir Putin about getting rid of journalists and Russian meddling in US elections when the two leaders met at the G20 summit in Japan.

As they sat for photographs at the start of their first formal meeting in nearly a year, the US president lightheartedly sought common ground with Putin at the expense of the journalists around them in Osaka.


“Get rid of them. Fake news is a great term, isn’t it? You don’t have this problem in Russia but we do,” Trump said.

Gee, I wonder why it is Putin doesn't have to worry about journalists?

Trump praises Chinese president extending tenure 'for life'...

Again, ample opportunity to denounce something like "president for life" -- instead he seems to support the idea, even quipping that we (America) might have to give that a shot.

"He's now president for life, president for life. And he's great," Trump said, according to audio of excerpts of Trump's remarks at a closed-door fundraiser in Florida aired by CNN. "And look, he was able to do that. I think it's great. Maybe we'll have to give that a shot someday," Trump said to cheers and applause from supporters.
