Sad, but true.
Many inventors don’t have a lot of money. They save $5-10k just to get a patent filed. Generally the patent attorney does an in-depth search on prior art, to see if has been done. Then the application is written.
So, at the USPTO, there are applications waiting to be approved.
Back when my grandfather was working for International Harvester, he invented the bush hog. He didn’t get credit because many times the company you work for gets the patent.
Eventually he did get a patent for something else, in his name.
Meanwhile, when my nephew was working for Essilor, they would put his name on the application, but he didn’t directly benefit.
So, it’s not just individual inventors at risks, it’s also companies.
Imagine if Elon gets his hands on Apple, IBM, Disney’s intellectual property. That’s just to name a few.

Also, foreign companies register patents in the us in order to do business here.
