On Friday Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made a statement that the US now had direct lines with North Korea. This was good news.
This morning Trump undercut Tillerson by telling him via Twitter negotiations are pointless. Trump again has acted rashly, and he's made it personal with Kim Jong Un. I would say for better or worse Trump is redefining how a president acts, but, this is clearly for the worse. One really has to wonder about his mental state right now. With so many looming crises around the world, and his desire to create spats with NFL players, and the mayor of San Juan, the ever tightening circle around his kids and son-in-law, the looming indictment of his campaign manager… Is he rational? Should Congress intervene with North Korea and move to limit his military options?

Diplomacy and negotiation shouldn't end until, at least, rounds are heading down range. And even then, you try to salvage what you can with a minimum of blood shed.
