Trump vs Iowa wrestlers;)

I don't see anything that states that the Iowa wrestling team supports Trump or anyone else. These guys are friends as well as teammates who went to the Trump rally and happened to score a photo with The Donald. That's the only appearance I see. I see a bunch of guys who happen to be Iowa wrestlers and got a photo with a candidate. Shoot -- for all we know, they don't even support the guy and just wanted to see a celebrity. Some of them are wearing HWC gear, but let's be honest -- more than half of their wardrobes probably consist of Iowa Wrestling/HWC gear. It's what they wear almost daily. Gilman actually dressed up!

Notice that this is just a small group of guys actually on the roster. If the whole team showed up with coaches, etc., that would be a bit much, IMO.

As long as there's nothing official from the university and/or the wrestling program stating that those entities support any specific candidate -- which, of course, would be way out of line -- I just see a bunch of friends attending an event where they get to see a celebrity and presidential candidate. Even if some or all of them do support the guy, that's obviously their 1st Amendment right. I have no problem with it at all.

Also, had they got paid for the even or if the University, Coaches etc vocally supported Trump, then it might be an issue. Nobody said a word. Then again, this IS the NCAA we are talking about. As a sidenote, was that a propeller hat I saw? God love him.

In my job, I'm not allowed to show up in uniform, make statements such as "people in the military do not like Obama." I am pretty careful when talking politics

Not a good idea. Politics should stay out of sports and sports should stay out of politics. What they do individually is, of course, their choice and right but I am not jazzed about the appearance that a University of Iowa sports team endorses any candidate.
I just became a very strong, enthusiastic Cooper fan.

What would be disappointing is a college student in the state of Iowa not trying to see / listen , to as many political candidates as possible. For a lot of them, this will be their first opportunity to cast a vote for President. Looks like the future leaders of this country trying to be more educated about the decision they will be making. Two of my kids go to Iowa and they have gone to see multiple candidates and had selfies taken with 3 of them from two different parties. Go Hawks! Go Iowa!

Here's Barta's statement issued at noon today:

I was made aware that a number of current and former UI students from various sports attended the rally last night.

University of Iowa student-athletes are encouraged to participate in the political process as individuals. However, like any endorsement by a student or faculty member, their participation should not be considered representative of the entire team or university. In recent months, candidates from both parties representing a spectrum of ideals have visited Iowa City. We will continue to support this approach without influencing particular political choice or agendas.

The jersey presented to Mr. Trump was not an official Iowa football jersey. No candidate has asked for, or received, any official Iowa athletic equipment or apparel.

We are confident that no violations of NCAA rules and regulations have taken place.

I think this is likely correct.

I will say that if I were a college coach I would let my players know that I felt it would be a very bad idea for them to discuss their political views publicly, because nothing good can come from that. They would be free to do it without repercussions, but kids are dumb and I would try to save them from themselves. And if they wanted to attend any of these rallies -- which would be good for them -- they should avoid drawing attention to themselves.

The bottom line is that they are in the entertainment business, which means don't do anything that might alienate the audience.

I agree with the U of I policy as announced by Barta: University of Iowa student-athletes are encouraged to participate in the political process as individuals - Gary Barta, 1/27/2015.

There may not be a time in their lives when they have a better opportunity to develope a political identity. I say the more active, the better. They are not kids.

Is this is the segue into the "Black Out" thread that I haven't opened? (Don't worry I'm not going to, I know how to follow instructions)

Jeesh guys. I promise if they're with Bernie or Hillary on a Twitter post I'll post that pic as well. Just suppose to be something cool out of the norm with the team. Have fun and relax. Must be getting closer to big tens and nationals bc people are getting overly sensitive!

I see what you did there!

I wasn't there. I was watching my friends get thrown out on livestream.

Too busy raging against the expresso machine at work or something? Here's the thing, you immediately wondered about the whereabouts of Edwin Cooper...you singled him out because he is black. Maybe Coop is a huge Trump fan but was elsewhere like yourself and couldn't be there. Maybe Coop dislikes Trump. Maybe Coop is just indifferent to politics and is concentrating on getting better in the room. But there you are pigeonholing him and his beliefs because of his race. Personally, I don't care who Coop, Gilman, Sorensen or anybody else is going to pull the lever for.

Like he fixed Atlantic City? Not a Trump fan myself, but it's a free country. I DO hope that the Donald made a significant contribution to the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. He's got the money, and they could use it.

The demise of Atlantic City had nothing to do with Trump...lol I'll leave it to you to research.

You are correct. I am disappointed with what I perceive as a lack of diversity on the team, so I pay attention to the few minorities who are there. If I care about diversity on the team, I certainly care about the uncivil war occurring in this political campaign. I care who everyone pulls the lever for.

Serious question. Has Trump said anything that could be construed by the media as being racist against blacks?

I know he has his words have been twisted by the media about the Islam religion and Mexican illegal immigrants but can't recall the media bouncing on him about anything black related.
