Trump vs Iowa wrestlers;)

You are correct. I am disappointed with what I perceive as a lack of diversity on the team, so I pay attention to the few minorities who are there. If I care about diversity on the team, I certainly care about the uncivil war occurring in this political campaign. I care who everyone pulls the lever for.

Very paternalistic attitude if you ask me. Who asked you to? Coop?

Being the self-appointed diversity monitor that you are, I am sure you are appalled at the lack of asians and latinos on the Iowa football team, basketball, swim teams, golf teams...etc

Here is what Iowa Wrestling values...excellence, hard work, resilience...I could go on but I'm sure you would agree that Tom Brands would field a team of purple people if he thought they could both win and represent Iowa well. Unless of course that's not what you are saying.

you'd rather have another 8 years of unity like the past 7?

Maternalistic, not paternalistic. The first is caring, the second patronizing. I don't follow the other sports, so that is not an issue for me.
Ahhhh. Now I see. You think I'm calling Brands a bigot! Nah. His priorities are just different than mine.

Nah...I was right the first time. Here's the problem with you "Mama-bear" SJW's...you assume to speak for the poor, beleaguered masses. Edwin Cooper got to where he is at by grit and determination. Even when he screwed up, he stuck with it and became a Hawk in the starting line-up. Even if he doesn't become an AA, that's something. Hopefully, he'll get his degree from a first rate institution. This is what I see when I look at Edwin Cooper from afar. He sure as hell doesn't need you to succeed in life...me neither. BTW, it would have been easy for Brands just to cut bait at that point but he gave Coop a second chance.

I get it...I have a sister who would be rolling around in her grave if Trump got elected. Don't much like the guy myself to be a president. As long as you're counting the white guys at his rally though, maybe you should look at who the Democrat Party is putting up for president if diversity is your thing. Hell, the Republican candidates look like a UN convention compared to the Dems.

1. I certainly do respect Edwin Cooper, Jr.
2. I'm going with Killer Mike.

Serious question. Has Trump said anything that could be construed by the media as being racist against blacks?

I know he has his words have been twisted by the media about the Islam religion and Mexican illegal immigrants but can't recall the media bouncing on him about anything black related.
No

Lack of diversity on the team? Don't you know we have a couple of Latino reinforcements on the way?

I shouldn't respond but I find it really ironic that someone is going to complain that Americans are at a political rally for a presidential candidate. I'm pretty sure freedom to attend such rallies is the very foundation of what this country was built on. But no, in this day and age the PC police are going to try and chew these kids up?? Guess what, you have the freedom to disagree if you like but their freedom to attend and even support who they want is their right! Besides, anyone who thinks because a bunch of Hawkeyes are at a political rally means the University is in support of a political figure is an idiot (in my opinion). Mini rant over...sorry.

If they are non-blacks, I guess they don't count. Talk about a racist viewpoint.

Poor Cooper was probably taking the picture.

Speaking of diversity, it would be nice to have a few Iowans on the U of Iowa tennis teams.

I agree with you, they should be free to attend any, or all, political rallies and support the candidate of their choice, etc...but that is not what some are raising their eyebrows about. The element in question is not their attendance, but them being invited on stage as apparent endorsers of the candidate and the reference to them, not as mere citizens, but as representatives of the University of Iowa. There is a distinction there.

I don't think you are responding to the point that some have made about this. Note - I do not support Trump, but nor do I care if others do, that is their right. But this was a mild use of their celebrity as University of Iowa sports team members. I understand why some, myself included, are a little hesitant to see that develop. Is this a huge problem...not in my eyes it isn't. To me, it is a little "off" though.

No, The Donald has "a great relationship with the blacks"

Why are you worried about the diversity on this team? The coaches go after the best athletes and I seriously doubt if the color of their skin has a damn thing to do with their decisions. That's just dumb!

I have no dout that color plays no part in who we recruit, I do have worries how iowa might be viewed by the recruit.

The demise of Atlantic City had nothing to do with Trump...lol I'll leave it to you to research.
Cause it? No. But he didn't save it either. The bankruptcy of his Casino didn't help. He got out leaving others to hold the bag.

To be fair, Trump has had very little to do with any of his bankruptcies. He said as much himself in a playboy interview in 1990 when he was being blamed as such. He admitted that Trump is merely a brand, he often has no say in business decisions and many times is just paid to have his his his name on the buildings with no ownership stake whatsoever.

Thomas Gilman thumbs up after his pin tonight. Maybe that was him being ornery or maybe he was telling the ones being critical of him and the rest of the wrestlers to stick it.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Old_wrestling_fan. The Des Moines Register contacted David Ridpath to get his take. Ridpath is a leading expert on NCAA compliance rules (and a former assistant coach at Ohio University). He said the only problem he saw was the wrestlers joining Trump on stage, which he said likely broke the rule. Fortunately, he added that it would only be considered a minor violation.

The wrestlers looked surprised when they were called up to join Trump. Therefore, I don't think any pre-planning was involved (except by Trump himself). Unfortunately, when they went up on stage en masse, it left an initial impression that the team itself was endorsing Trump, not just the student-athletes acting in their individual capacities.

In the end the NCAA may not even bother to take the time and energy to look into this matter further. Sometimes they ignore these types of one-off potential violations, especially when the penalty would only be a slap on the wrist. (That said, they can be petty at times.)

Lesson learned and on to more important topics. The team is looking stronger with each dual. Anybody who may be counting them out for a title could be in for a big surprise. Go Hawks!

"WOW". Just when you thought you heard it all.

If anyone is spending any time even bothering to concern themselves with a few wrestlers standing on a stage at a political rally, they best spend their time concerning themselves with the SEC football cesspool. There is more money changing hands there than spent in a political campaign. Ok not literally, but you get the point.

Ha, ha! Roger that. If the NCAA were to get into looking into the SEC football money, they
wouldn't even have time to look into anything else, especially smaller sports like wrestling.
