Geeze that is one unappealing OOC schedule...
In what way? NDSU has probably been about the quality of a top 25 FBS team the last five years or so. Since 2010, they are 5-0 against FBS teams, all on the road of course - wins over Iowa State, Kansas State, Colorado State, Minnesota, and Kansas. Certainly Iowa will be favored, but this is far from an easy game.

Are you really excited to play an FCS team? It is really a no win game for Iowa. Same with Miami OH. Same with ISU.

Actually, if they win the NDSU game and the Miami game, they are credited with a single win. The same as every other game on their schedule.

Maybe you're one of those complainers who are only happy after one or two wins per year, but every single win is enjoyable to me.

The LAST 5 games is where all the action is, IMHO. Hope we are still healthy by then.

OOC looks pretty far from "cupcake" when you consider reigning National FCS champion, another Power 5 school and a MAC team.

Crossover games against Rutgers, Michigan and Penn St. 2 out of 3 are expected to be either good or really good, so overall, a much tougher schedule than last year. At least, that's the way it looks from my view, 4 months before the season.

I would agree that it is a no win game because of their FCS status, but it is still a very good opponent - probably better than our recent FBS power 5 non-conference opponents - Iowa State, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Syracuse, etc.

NDSU has been the elite of FCS for the last 5 years but lets remember they are playing with 20 less scholarship players than FBS teams. They have beat some awful P5 schools (Kansas, ISU, Minn) but I wouldn't put them on par with Pitt or 'Zona.

A MAC team. The worst team in the Big XII. A FCS team. How is that "pretty good."

Great another post complaining against non conference schedule. Is it so hard for people to grasp the concept with ISU who Iowa plays at home the years they have 5 road conf games with the new 9 game conference schedule that unless Barta sacrifices 1 home game to do a home and home with another power 5 team (which I'm sure would have many more complaining about) or drop ISU this is how the non conference schedule will be like for the foreseeable future.

Last year's final sagarin rankings had NDSU #36, and Pitt #40. Arizona #55.

I get it. A 9 game conference schedule makes scheduling difficult. So are you okay with not playing any other P5 opponents other than ISU?

I'd rather play other P5 opponents besides ISU, but it isn't going to happen in the 9 game conference schedule, unless we are willing to play ISU less than annually. It's just the reality - they need 7 home games. I'd be all for playing ISU on a more intermittent basis to allow for other P5 opponents, but that's another discussion.

As much as I love some cyclone bashing :)....they are clearly not the worst team in the b12.

FCS or not.....They have shown they are better than other FBS schools...
2007 at Minnesota W, 27-21
2010 at Kansas W, 6-3
2011 at Minnesota W, 37-24
2012 at Colorado State W, 22-7
2013 at Kansas State W, 24-21
2014 at Iowa State W, 34-14

Didn't minny play a MAc team for their BOWL game? And you whine about an early season game?

Is it a schedule to brag about when we beat them....no. But not as bad as you make it sound(espcially when you look at other teams non confernce)

Rip me all you want but D1 schools should never play D1AA schools. I hope Iowa drops UNI next year and picks up a D1 team. No problem with a MAC team and ISU but please do as Delaney suggests and not play those FCS teams.

For those of you who are talking up NDSU, they lost a ton off last year's team. They'll be okay, but hardly unbeatable.

You realize the same people who are attacking you for calling out the OOC schedule are the same people who complain the media doesn't show the Hawks enough respect. They can't seem to figure out they go hand in hand for a program like Iowa that's trying to prove they belong with the blue bloods of college football.

Exactly. I'm not saying that I want Iowa to play Alabama, Florida State, and Southern Cal in its 3 OOC games, but it would be nice to have a game that brings a little excitement. The ISU game doesn't excite me. Regardless of the outcome, they are the team that is battling Kansas for the B12 cellar. I realize that game isn't going to go away but it would be nice if we could push it to every other year in order to make room for another P5 school.

I agree with that as far as the ISU game goes. It can remain on the schedule, but play 2 out of 4 years so we can get other P5 schools.

I find the ISU game much more exciting than the random Pitt/Arizona game. The fanbase at large agrees with me; the ISU game has more people around the stadium than any other game.

But there is a large contingent of internet yahoos who hate it.

I don't think this is as true as you think it is. All of the guys I graduated with and most of the other Iowa fans I know dislike ISU week.

Around the stadium? Really?

Could that possibly have to do with the fact that the two institutions are located closer to one another than almost any other match up? And, it is a pretty sure bet that the vast majority of those 'around the stadium' as opposed to those actually in the venue are about as interested in the game itself as they are in the price of tea in China. They are 'around the stadium' primarily to imbibe and then imbibe some more. That is precisely why some express the concerns over the scheduling this game at night.

Now, as far as the game itself, nothing you have said impacts excitement coming from the event held 'in the stadium'. To state that the Pitt game last September was not exciting is to deny reality. Same holds true for other games at Kinnick not involving isu. The Arizona State game of 2003 comes to mind. It featured two high quality teams in an atmosphere that would be hard to equal and it did not even have to account for those 'around the stadium'.

The yahoos just might be those that feel an incessant need to try to justify the existence of a game that truly holds so little worth when one stops to really look at it.

I don't like the ISU game because it feels like a no-win situation every year. If we win its "oh, well they were expected to win" and if we lose its "how did we lose to Iowa State one of the worst programs in the FBS".

Anyone have a guess as to what time the Rutgers game will be? Just curious because I'll be there.

Of course it's highly unlikely that it'll be a night game, especially considering Iowa already has three scheduled and Rutgers has two. There are three other more appealing matchups that day, Nebraska vs. Northwestern, Wisconsin vs. Michigan State, and Penn State vs. Michigan.

I'm guessing it'll be a noon game, but wanted to see if anyone else has thoughts.

All the night games have been announced. Rutgers will not be a night game.

I realize that game isn't going to go away
That's pretty much all you need to tell yourself, before you start to make a complaint about our schedule anymore. At least now that we know that you have acknowledged this fact, we can bear that in mind when reading any future complaints you may have about Iowa's schedule or playing Iowa State.

I can complain about Ohio State not dropping their football program too. It's still gonna end in the same result every time.

Nothing will happen. But like you with the Iowa State game, I'm not willing to accept it and concede all hope just yet.

Actually the game truly holds worth when one stops to really look at it. Because I said so. So I guess that means we're at an impasse.

Unless, of course, you're willing to admit that my opinion outweighs yours.

Which is why I would like to see it at least go to every other year. The powers that be could do something to fix Iowa's ISU problem. I don't see any realistic route to fix your O$U problem!

The powers that be could do something about OSU's problem too. They just choose not to. Simple as that.

I can immediately think of nine games this fall that hold more importance than any against an OOC opponent. For me that means each of those games is worth a whole lot more.

Secondly, the ND State game holds some intrigue not normally present given their recent success versus FBS opponents. I would also rate that game as worth more than the other two OOC games.

So, that accounts for at least ten games on the schedule. I would agree that the isu game is probably worth more than the game against Miami (Ohio).
